California Salmon fishing!!!!! Now this is the most exciting time of the year for me when the ocean fishing hits its prime. California opened up its ocean Chinook Salmon season April 6th, 2013. I'm super stoked and have been chomping at the bit waiting for this. Where to start? First off fresh king salmon is truly a feast for the gods. The bright red flesh that's been feeding on the cold water krill living on California's northern coast is to die for. Theirs so many ways to prepare it. Some recipes I like using are seasoning your fish with sea salt and pepper, fresh rosemary resting on the fish, rub a little minced California garlic and finally dress it with melted butter. BBQ and enjoy. My mouth is drooling thinking about fresh salmon steaks. Always leave the skin on its a natural barrier to cook the fish with. Techniques commonly used for the ocean are mooching live or dead bait commonly anchovies or herring, or trolling dead anchovies and herring. Nickel baiters (when trolling) are a favorite of west coast charter captain for a reason they work. I prefer cable baiters when I have time to prep my own bait. I also have a collection of hooch in rigs that I tie up, as well as some spoons (commercial fisherman a choice method). All these techniques work and I will go into more detail my new found love of spoons and hoochies. If anyone has any question or comments or wants to learn a few techniques let me know. I love salmon fishing and will always gladly discuss this topic with anyone.
