“I can’t talk about this anymore, Alice, I’m sorry.” Alex took a step back, her worried eyes glancing around yet again in case anyone was listening to them. “Nothing is going to change without some very serious consequences. I’d rather things stay the same than… Well, than things get worse.”

Calming down she sighed out, “Look, you can do what you want to do. I can’t mettle in your relationship since it’s not my place. Just giving some advice. I just...I can’t lose you, not to him. I hope you can understand that...”

“… No. I’m sorry, Alice, but you can’t help me. It’ll just make him think he was right, that I have been lying to him.” Alex took a step back, taking her hand out of Alice’s. “He’s my husband. If I- If I do anything, I have nothing. The only thing I can do is to stop seeing James.” And lose one of her only friends. One of the people she cared about most. The thought made Alex want to burst into tears all over again. “Then Frank will stop accusing me of being unfaithful.”

“When do you think that will happen,” she asked, “That shit isn’t normal. Fighting once and a while, sure. But this many times because he’s being possessive over you? It’s not normal, especially if he’s bringing it up multiple times over something so petty. I’m standing by my statement Alex. You don’t have to believe me. But I’m only tell you this as your friend.”

Mun chooses. 

“Alice… It isn’t that simple. It doesn’t matter what I think.” She ran a hand under her eyes, catching the tears before they could fall. “I can’t do anything, things… Things just have to stay as they are. Because I don’t know what Frank would do. To me or to James.”

Taking her hand into hers, she said immediately, “Not while I’m around. I can help you. I can handle myself if he does anything. But it’s your choice whether or not if you want me to help. Not just me. My brothers, too. Please let us help you.”

The thread that was holding Alex together didn’t quite break, but it was fraying. Checking there was no-one around, Alex’s voice got even more hushed. “He thinks I’m having an affair! And I’m not, I’m really not, but he won’t listen to me. Each time I think he’s dropped it, he just brings it up again a while later.”

“Does that really sound like a healthy relationship,” she asked, her own voiced hushed, not wanting to get her in trouble, “I know you say that you love him, but is it really worth hearing those words of his every day? One of these days, it will end you. I know I’ve never been in a relationship, but I know enough to know that this shit isn’t healthy. And deep down, you know I’m right.”

“I have freedom,” Alex objected, but her expression made it obvious that she was on shaky ground. “I have you, and my job…” Although Frank did keep talking about how she didn’t need to work, how she’d be safer at home. “Alice, I appreciate this, really, but there’s nothing you can help with. Frank and I are… We’re just having a difficult time right now. All couples go through them. There’s nothing I can do.” Oops, she’d definitely meant to say ‘anything you can do’ there.

Alice noticed the slip of her wording, hesitating before she spoke, “What do you mean there’s nothing you can do? Alex, please stop trying to shut me out and let me help you.”
