One thing I’ve learned from Bad Buddy is to not let what you want to happen get in the way of enjoying and appreciating the merits of the actual story that’s being told.

#bad buddy #wish fulfillment is good but that’s not the be all end all of a great show #I think a lot of us were heavily invested in Pat and Pran fighting it out with their parents #and then they were like… nope that’s not where we are going to spend our time and energy #…and you know what…. that is completely valid #and still made for a beautiful story and a beautiful romance

I love that the moral of the story of Payback is basically just "The best revenge is a life well lived." And it's phenomenal.

Though I do think the thread of karma throughout the story does mean that the people who deserve it will in the end get their comeuppance.

So I'd this taiwanese show called The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly sitting in my watchlist and I've finally decided to give it a go and was blown away by the amount of boykissers that appear in it!

Surprisingly enough there wasn't any BL pairing in this despite it's DNA (it's written and directed by Du Zheng Zhe from Holiday and At the Moment). But it still was a nice watch and I'd a bunch of Leo Pointing moments through out the 24 episodes.

Here are the boys who popped up:

Jed Chung (Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars) His cameo was the most fun because he kept appearing almost randomly during the whole show.

Charles Tu (First Note of Love)

Aaron Lai (Be Loved in House: I Do)

Andy Chen (The Only One and the upcoming The Way U Shine)

Boris Wang + Ko Cheng (Holiday) A lil'bummed that these two didn't interact

There are also some other familiar faces sprinkled here and there for those who follow the Taiwan BL-matic Universe.

Aaron and Andy show up in the first arc of the show which in my humble opinion is the best part of the series, they remain until episode 10, and once their storyline ends the show does lose some steam.

Charles, Boris and Ko appear during a flashback episode at the halfway point and Charles is infuriating as this gullible idiot lmao (awww I forgot how charming he is).

This show is pretty much a taiwanese telenovela, there is intrigue, familiar affairs, backstabbing, female rivalry, wedlock schemes, more backstabbing, a culinary reality show that nobody is watching — they have it all (except gays).

It's available at IQIYI and Netflix depending on the country you are in.

I'm very curious where Payback will ultimately take us with Sunny and Kongkiat. If it wasn't clear before, episode 8 made it abundantly clear that despite the title, this show is more interested in healing than punishment. Pakin does not say that anything bad happened to the teacher that crushed his confidence: his "revenge" is an image of that teacher confronted with his success. And Kajorn directly offers Pen-neung the choice that is available to everyone at all times: accept your guilt, accept your losses, and work toward doing better.

In most revenge stories, the protagonist has been waiting and planning for years, coping with their loss by dreaming of the day they'll pay back the people responsible. Not so Sun. For five years he believes he is solely responsible, and he is paying with his life. Even knowing that Bank stole all his money, he doesn't think of blaming him for anything until he overhears his bragging.

It has me wondering: was that moment when he chose to pursue acting really about getting revenge on Sunny? Or was it the first crack in the clouds, the first move toward living a life instead of numbly going through the motions? Was revenge the only thing he could justify wanting and trying to get, since it's still a way of appeasing his own guilt toward his family? Was it the wanting and trying that was important, after all?

Sunny is a terrible person (and also a victim... there's a whole other post to write about how the show refuses moral binaries), and Kongkiat is worse. I won't be sorry for whatever degree of downfall they suffer. But the further we get into the show the more I think their downfall isn't ultimately the point. The point is Sun finding a new family and letting himself feel again. The point is Sky moving past his trauma and getting to act without fear. The point is Kajorn getting the security to take care of his daughter and all his lost boys. The point is Jay... well, we're not deep enough into Jay's story for me to really know what healing looks like for him, but at least he's got a beautiful wild man who matches his freak.

And yes I do want to talk about how interesting the character that sun got called to play is (and I love director so so much for the ways she deals with the people around her with the actual issues she writes about you can tell she cares sooooo much.)

But jay as someone who has dealt with the aftermath of suicide and sun who has considered it and the changes to the script which encourage life. Like someone else will probably do a really good well written analysis on it. But God in the midst of everything "LIVE, find a reason and LIVE!"
