This particular poem is very special to me because I wrote this with my nephew Ncufi when he was 7. This happened after he asked me why he was ‘this colour’ (referring to brown) because he thought white skin was nicer. This completely shattered my heart because here was this beautiful brown kid exposed to a destructive concept of what beauty is that I had been fighting all my life. Being part of #blackherstory reminded me how important it is to celebrate each other as women but also our history as black people. I can’t measure how much the kids are taking in but after putting up the posters there was this one kid who had her eyes fixed on one of the posters. The bell rang signaling break was over but she just stood there in the snow and did not move for a few mins. It explores the ability for visual language to surpass spoken language in order to simplify how black children see themselves. I’m passionate about the identity of black kids and upon discovering that Gothenburg is one of the most segregated cities in Sweden I thought my work should allow for Co-creation in building the self-esteem of kids in one of the marginalized communities. So I partnered up with @skolaicentrum_sjumilaskolan to create work that engages with the little children of the Biskopsgården community.
