One of the newest viral videos making its way around the internet right now is from a Dr. Phil episode from last year featuring a down right awful 13 year old girl who thinks she is from the streets and can tell her mother what to do.  As a parent I could not imagine my kid treating me this way, it is just ridiculous.  On top of the way she treats her mom, the way she presents herself is atrocious. She says her “accent” comes from the streets, which to me sounds a bit ridiculous. However, what unfolds near the end of the video seems to be internet gold because just today alone I have seen at least 15 different friends on Facebook posting memes featuring this girl and her tag line “cash me ousside, howbow dah”. They range from romantic memes like “cash some feelings for me, howbow dah” to some military related ones like “When hadji keeps dropping mortars on your base…. Below are the 9 reasons why people participate in a groundswell and how it relates to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge of 2014. 1. Keeping up with friends: The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge helped individuals “keep up with friends” by watching the videos of them completing the challenge.

2. Making new friends: Not quite sure how the challenge would help someone make new friends.  Maybe if someone you don’t know is tagged completing the challenge and you appreciate their altruistic behavior and want to get to know them better, you may try to become friends with them.

3. Succumbing to social pressure from existing friends: The challenge had individuals tagging their friends in it and saying they had 24hrs to complete the challenge and they needed to tag other friends. Once you were tagged, everyone saw, and they were waiting to see your video.

4. Paying it forward: Those that did complete the challenge paid it forward by tagging other friends.        

5. The altruistic impulse: Some people like completing a “good deed of the day” per se. By completing the challenge you raised awareness about a very unheard of disease prior to 2014.

6. The prurient impulse: The Ice Bucket challenge “fails” were one of my favorite things to watch.  I fell into the prurient impulse and caught myself getting stuck on watching buckets falling on peoples heads.

7. The creative impulse: People got very creative with the challenge, my favorite was the Flashdance reenactment featuring bearded dudes.

8. The validation impulse: As we learned during last week’s coursework, we live in a world run by likes. By posting an ice bucket video, you were bound to get some likes.

1)      The origin of the groundswell in regards to domestic violence throughout the NFL in my opinion started with the Ray Rice case.  Though I found articles as far back as 2003 (that sounds weird to say, and now I feel old) discussing Victor Riley from the New Orleans Saints, who rammed his vehicle into another vehicle which was occupied by his wife and child. He was arrested for domestic violence, and yet the NFL only suspended him from ONE game.  I think the Ray Rice case created the groundswell because it was videotaped and uploaded onto social media for the world to see. Fans witnessed their star running back dragging his then fiancés unconscious body out of an elevator after a physical altercation.  Due to the media and social media attention that came from this incident, Roger Goodell, the commissioner for the NFL, instituted a policy in which any player who commits an abuse act against a spouse or partner would be suspended for six games.  There hadn’t seemed to be much buzz about this policy in the past two years, members committed acts they were punished; until Josh Brown of the NY Giants.  It seems that the NFL is trying to bury the story about Brown and how he only received a one-day suspension for abuse to his wife.

2)      I believe that domestic violence in the NFL did pass the groundswell technology test outlined in our textbook.  It enabled individuals to connect in new ways; some people spoke openly against domestic violence and maybe came out as victims themselves and found comfort in others. It may have enabled individuals to reconnect in new ways with their families if they swore off watching football due to the NFLs laissez-faire attitude towards abusers.  It was definitely effortless to sign up for in order to jump on the bandwagon to not be okay with the domestic violence going on within the NFL. In a way it did shift the power from the institution to the people because of the uproar in individuals not being okay with just a two-day suspension the NFL commissioner created a new policy making it a six-day suspension for the first offence.  The community did create enough content, from blog posts, news articles, videos, and Facebook status updates it seems that for the past two years I can’t remember a time when there wasn’t something out there about an NFL player being arrested for violence.  In regards to open platforms and inviting partnerships  I would say since the domestic violence isn’t a technology in itself it still does allow open discussion. As I said earlier there are plenty of news articles, blog posts, tweets and status updates in regards to the violence.

Took a trip up to Tarvisio for the annual Krampus festival. For those of you not familiar with Krampus read below.
