No one cares about how much it hurt you more than God does.
On a related note, you don’t need to be a vegan to be prolife and not a hypocrite. Animal lives aren’t on the same level as human lives either.
I have gotten that argument before too. Kinda boggles my mind that people think animals and people are the same
Is it true that you could only make these type of rationalizations if you are a Christian? Without a Christian worldview of man being the only creatures made in God’s image, the belief that we were given dominion over all animals it seems hard to draw that conclusion to me. In a biological aspect, to the secular person humans are included in the animal kingdom and therefore see no distinction.
Secular people don’t truly believe that either. They were made in the image of God as well and instinctively know the value of humanity, even though their morals have been corrupted, or else they wouldn’t see murder any different from killing an animal for food. They also wouldn’t be appalled, as they rightfully should be, by cannibalism or treating a human being the same way you’d treat a dog if they truly believed we were animals or worth as much as an animal.
Most people do see how it’s different.
Wow that’s a great point yoooo

The Human Perception of Good and Evil.
Please read completely and comment thoughtfully.
Say you ask the average person whether they liked a movie that recently came out. Some people will say things along the lines of “Eh it was alright.” But the majority of people who reply, especially young people, will either tell you they “loved it” and “it was awesome” or “it was terrible.” and they “hated it. Sure, there will be people who stay in the middle, but when forced to decide whether it was “good” or “bad,” they will have a tendency to choose either extreme. This is why we have “haters.” We as humans don’t like to say that something isn’t good, we like to say that it is terrible, even irredeemable so
Now imagine that we’re aren’t talking about a movie. The stakes are high and patience is wearing thin. Say this is a discussion about abortion for example. Are you going to calm down and be reasonable and realize that maybe your not completely right and the other person isn’t necessarily and evil pig? Maybe, but that takes brainpower, and when something takes brainpower over a large sample of people making the decision, the majority is going to fail.
For centuries now, the world has been developing a quick patch for this issue. If we dislike people who have strong, emotional opinions because they’re usually acting unreasonably, why don’t we just say that neither side is right, and the only thing that is morally wrong is saying that what you believe is right is right for everyone? At first glance, that seems perfectly reasonable, in fact it sounds like it will fix all kinds of conflicts. The problem is that just because people are too stupid too deal with complex issues of right and wrong consistently, doesn’t mean that right and wrong don’t exist.
People simply can’t avoid throw the baby out with the bathwater. But just because the water is the filth of human hatred and narrow-mindedness does not mean that the baby of true objective morality should go out the window. Why can’t we deal with other people doing something that is morally wrong without shunning and stigmatizing them? And why can’t we deal with our own sins and shortcomings without resorting to either complete shame or denial that what your doing is wrong? People say things that imply that killing a fetus is okay, not because it is objectively permissible, but because you “have no right to tell someone else what is right and what is wrong.” And yet under that well meaning assertion, morality itself crumbles.
People fear the unfair stigma brought down by strictly religious, but they have no problem condemning terrorists, murderers, rapists, abusers, bigots and racists. Why is this? Because they know these things are wrong and should be labeled as such. And yet as soon as we humans can relate to someone’s situation, we lose the ability to productively chastise them. We have no trouble vilifying child abusers, after all they “deserve” it. We conveniently turn a blind eye to their humanity because we can distance themselves from them. “If I had a child, I would never do something like that.” And yet someone did do something like that, a human being. We are all human beings, we don’t claim the right to condemn others for falling to the flaws of human nature that we ourselves also possess.
The human brain doesn’t like making complex moral decisions. We like to have things come in black, white, or a grey that indicates not both black and white, but the absence of either. We struggle with the idea that people who make mistakes deserve forgiveness, because we don’t want to need forgiveness ourselves. In this desire to turn what we like into what is truly good (because we like ourselves) we forget that people aren’t purely good or purely evil. A woman who gets an abortion does a bad thing, so our emotional brains, which have an extremely hard time balancing moral subtitles say that she is “bad.” And yet we know that she’s not. We see what led her too that decision and imagine ourselves in her shoes. We imagine her fear and indecision and can’t help but think that she is a good person making a tough decision. But then, our simple brains change tracks. If we empathize with that woman, she must be a “good” person, and therefore her decisions are permissible. The struggle rages until our moral decision making skills are confused into choosing one of the three options. Black, white, or an ambiguous grey where we inject enough reason into the situation to realize that black and white don’t work in a system of categorizing people into good or evil, but don’t inject enough reason to actually command our moral judgment intellectually.
Its easy to make quick, moral judgement based on what you feel. Its also easy to make rational arguments that ultimately result in all emotional moral alignments being false, and therefore relative to the individual. What is difficult, really almost impossible, for an individual to maintain, is a functional union of rational moral judgement and emotional moral judgement. The reason that we have so many issues with controversy in this day and age is that it is simply impossible to get everyone functioning at a high moral level simultaneously We fail at listening to our instincts about right and wrong, without making a mess of the very values we claim to protect. Only through the balance of our rational and intuitive selves can we achieve meaningful conversation about controversial topics that is compassionate and fair to everyone involved.
Okay, I disagree with a lot of this.
1, I don’t think “objective morality” exists. Morality is just a concept our brains came up with to survive. “That lion/person/other tribe is evil, I better stay away.” Nothing is inherently good or evil.
2, Yes, people can condemn and refuse to forgive each other. That is literally what we evolved to do. If someone killed your friend would you hate them? Of course. You’d hate them and stay away so you didn’t get killed too.
3, Hate is not inherently bad and love is not inherently good. They both evolved for different purposes.
4, The whole abortion thing is ridiculous. People are dying every day and nobody seems concerned about /them/. If you really want to save lives, go work in a homeless shelter or become a firefighter. But let women remove clumps of cells, will you?
5, Not to mention making abortion illegal doesn’t actually lower the number of abortions. People just get more unsafe ones.
6, So it really doesn’t matter whether abortion is “moral” or not. People are going to have them anyway, we might as well make sure it’s as safe as possible.
1: If you don’t think that objective morality exists, then the Pro-Choice movement is as invalid as the Pro-Life movement. “Women’s rights” don’t exist if right itself doesn’t exist.
2: I never said otherwise, but any moral argument needs to take hatred and forgiveness into account.
3: Love and hate become significant when objective morality is assumed, in which case they did not simply “evolve for different purposes” and actually signify moral reality on an emotional level.
4: Opposing abortion is not ridiculous. Saving lives is never ridiculous, that’s why we have firefighters and people working at homeless shelters in the first place.
5: The legality of abortion does not effect its morality. wWe fight the battle we can fight.
6: Doing something evil is always evil. You can’t compromise on your beliefs or you create a culture where the ends justify the means.
Help the INTJs are debating with each other and both of them have good points
Lol this is the most ennea1 thing ever: objective morality. How is a fi user talking about objective morality though… @mbti-why totally agree. @intj-the-cynical-idealist sorry my dude but most abortions happen before the baby is even biologically alive so i don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Plus, if that mom may die/breed a baby that is not healthy, or experiencing a disorder (maybe even PTSD because of rape??), growing that child may actually hurt the child’s psychology and influence them badly. Btw, ever heard of Yin and Yang? Being that extremist ends up with rly unhealthy ideals (for example nazism). I highly do not recommend :/ Morality is nothing but human-made principles that structures the social life. There is no morality in wilderness. That’s why it varies. Read some books on psychology, crime, poverty etc. and you’ll see what i’m talking about. Hell, even Robin Hood has a different view on morality. There are ofc basic rules for society to function properly but when you go deep enough, everything collapses because there is no certainty. You have to be too specific on these issues and once again, objective means “not influenced by personal feelings or opinions and representing facts” “not dependent on the mind for existence”. Morality is, oppositely, dependent on the mind for its existence and also human-made which means it includes personal feelings/opinions. There are connections you can make in life but effacing your emotional side is nothing but destruction of morality. Morality is a way of defense and should not be a way of offense. Everyone has their own moral code because all of us have been lived through different things and have different commentaries. Let people be moral in their own way -unless they are harming you bc that’s the limits of freedom. Abortion can and do save lives of mothers and that’s the point. Children who would suffer are mostly removed before they are even alive. What’s wrong with that? If you’re so concerned with this, just stop eating because those things are alive!!! How dare you eat!! So corrupted :00 you’ll burn for ever… Don’t have safe-sex, it’s killing your potential!! Guess we are all cold-blooded murderers. //btw don’t get freedom’s limits wrong. Abortion can’t hurt you but some racist can.
You seem the have the idea that I am obligated to respect the fact that obligation doesn’t exist. That is a logically invalid statement that must prove itself false in order to be true.
Also I’m pretty sure you just called me an extremist for writing a post pointing out the flaws in extremism. Did you not get that part?
You say that morality is dependent on the mind for existence. This is true in the same sense that numbers depend on our minds for existence. But that doesn’t keep you from counting does it?
“Abortion can’t hurt you but some racism can.” Well I’m sorry, the idea that I should avoid pain and death is a subjective construct of my brain. Why should I avoid dying again?
Wow man… You just killed survivalism, evolution of psychology, definition of subjective and objective. You said science is subjective so i’m not gonna even bother to prove that science isn’t. Go on with mixing the brain in the vat with the those terms. I am not telling you that you’re obligated to respect the fact that there are no obligations. You can respect whatever you want. I’m telling you to stay away from people’s private decisions. Weather or not i or any mother breed a child is not even disputable for others. If a mother actually decides that it’s a bad idea, she probably thought enough to not give birth to her own damn baby. It might be either economical, psychological or concerning their or baby’s health. I wouldn’t wanna die giving birth to my child just like many other. I wouldn’t wanna give birth to a child that has inabilities because that may haunt them in the future. People have reasons and unless they are fucking cold blooded psychopaths, why would they kill their baby for nothing? Btw racism will hurt you because dividing people is even a signal of death in horror movies. It’s that simple lmao abortion is not dividing people, it is actually pretty helpful for society. If you think it should be entirely banned, then i’m proposing to ban masturbation entirely. You are wasting potential lives for your own damn pleasure. How is that not illegal but abortion may be. And before finishing, objective morality is extremist af. You’re saying that people only have one choice in most contexts. How is that not extremist? Morality is changeable and subjective. You cannot force it to people unless you’re gonna brainwash them and yay, here you are, an extremist dictator. I’m not becoming a nun and you can’t force me, i’m all 7 deadly sins and wear them like a badge ;) You can justify anything because morality has so many weak points (yes, in religion too.)
Without objective moral truth, most of your statements break down under basic logical principles.
“…stay away from people’s private decisions” is a meaningless command that is completely arbitrary.
“I wouldn’t want to die giving birth to my child” Is meaningless because your desire to avoid suffering is an arbitrary construct of your brain.
“…why would they kill their baby for nothing.” Assumes that the alternative to this is that they kill their baby for “something.” Something that has meaning I assume…which you’ve been saying doesn’t exist.
“…your own damn pleasure.” Actually according to you my own pleasure is infinitely more relevant than any hypocrisy. Since hypocrisy doesn’t truly exist without moral truth.
Assertions that objective morality is extremist makes no sense because extremism doesn’t exist in any meaningful way without objective morality.
“You can justify anything” Justification “doesn’t exist” remember. Plus justifying something doesn’t make it right. That’s the point of objective morality in the first place. I’m not saying that any person’s morality is objective. I’m saying that morality exists independently from people. Otherwise it makes no sense.
.
1. i don’t fucking believe in any god. objective morality can only exist with god but not everyone believes in god(s). 2. you’re being extremist because it’s extremely religious. 3. quoting wikipedia: “Objective morality is the idea that a certain system of ethics or set of moral judgments is not just true according to a person’s subjective opinion, but factually true. Proponents of this theory would argue that a statement like “Murder is wrong” can be as objectively true as “1 + 1 = 2.” Most of the time, the alleged source is God, or the Kantian categorical imperative; arguably, no objective source of morality has ever been confirmed, nor have any a priori proofs been offered to the effect that morality is anything other than subjective.“ you see, never confirmed, thus it is subjective AF. 4. thoughts are never never never NEVER arbitrary. there is always a cause to affect. #determinism 5. avoiding suffering is not arbitrary because: evolution and self-survival. wasn’t that like, obvious… 6. then is a baby killing their mom while she was giving birth to them a murderer or a sinner? put them to jail!! best idea ever™!! yay morally right!! never corrupted!! letting mothers die, v good. sleep with the guilt my friend, i’m not sure the objective morality would let you though… 7. well if justification doesn’t exist in your vocabulary, what are you even trying to do? 8. tell me one goddamn species other than humans that has the exact same morality and believes in some god. prove it. i will accept your point’s validity. ash
1: Belief doesn’t alter reality. You don’t need to believe in God for him to exist.
2: Maybe, but like I said its a technical term that doesn’t carry moral weight as you seem to have intended it to.
4: Just because it’s not arbitrary doesn’t mean it has meaning by itself.
5: Self survival without objective morality, AKA without meaning, is pointless, in that case, being alive is no different then being dead.
6: According to you it doesn’t matter what I say is right and what is wrong so…there’s no point in tackling this one.
7: Oh justification does exist in my vocabulary. I just was wondering what you meant by implying that justification is something to be avoided. Justification is only wrong if wrong exists in the first place.
8: Here’s a snarky reply to that one, if you care to indulge me.
Happy Lunar New Year! January 28th marks the beginning of the year of the rooster, and California Adventure is hosting a huge party to celebrate. Head over to Paradise Pier to join in on the fun. You can listen to live Chinese and Vietnamese bands, watch acrobats, get your face painted, visit the Lucky Wishing Wall, meet Mulan and Mushu, and enjoy specialty Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese snacks from food stands all along the waterfront.
The Lunar New Year celebration runs until February 5th.
Everything in the world is about to be wrapped up, so take nothing for granted. Stay wide-awake in prayer. Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it. Love makes up for practically anything. Be quick to give a meal to the hungry, a bed to the homeless—cheerfully. Be generous with the different things God gave you, passing them around so all get in on it: if words, let it be God’s words; if help, let it be God’s hearty help. That way, God’s bright presence will be evident in everything through Jesus, and He’ll get all the credit as the One mighty in everything—encores to the end of time. Oh, yes! 1 Peter 4:8-11 (MSG)
