“I don’t want to live without you, either,” he whispers, but not in the common tongue. He retreats into Zaunish, where it feels a little safer, and kisses Jayce again. It’s still soft, just a press, but this time it lingers. He’s never been very good at saying how he feels but he’s trying. For Jayce.

Are you kidding me. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. This is not an illustration. It's a photorealistic, atmospheric vision that's been sent straight to my head. Holy shit.

Beauregard Lionett → I’ve treated people like shit my whole life. And… I don’t know. Having one transformative moment doesn’t mean that you’re immediately going to be a different person overnight and being better is something you have to work at, I guess.

This is a prologue, and thank you for time, support & patience. The first slice of this comic is 15 pages, already drafted + posted as I finish. The complete thing should be around 40pg. Not set in the same universe as my last fic! 🪲
I am whatever the opposite of a speed runner is. I am a game meanderer. I have to look at literally everything. I am overly cautious in every way. I forget to pause and wander away from the game. I take a minimum 7 hours to get through any given level. If you give me a timer I will cry.

AHHHHAHAHA I can post pics now! This is Match Your Breath to Mine, by dear @27dragons <3 Stunning artwork of chapter 4 by @wr0wn.
As always, crafty details under the cut!
Such a pleasure to make this bind for a gift exchange! I made two copies (the third, my own, is still in progress aha), one for dragons and one for dear @zillac.
I had SO much fun designing these covers. The fic is a wonderful jayvik college AU set over the course of their time together at university (AND THEY WERE ROOMMATES!!). When I was in college, I had a corkboard on my desk with a bunch of memorabilia and photos, so I wanted to emulate that dorm room, scrapbook-y feeling here. Photos are from various Pinterest images that I converted into Polaroids in Canva (there are a few I had to cut for space, but posting all them here now ehe)--
--and the full spreads were designed in Affinity Publisher:
The assets were also a blast to gather and collage together! Some I made myself (the red string is a piece of yarn I had in my fiber stash, and the acceleration rune sticker was hand-lasso'd by me in CSP), some I had in my assets stash, and some were from various png blogs on tumblr. One of them is even a photo dragons took! (the one of the paper chain, hehe >:3).
One of my favorite photos to edit was the one I eventually used for the title page, which I made more jayvik-y in CSP lol:
For the construction, I used the three-piece Bradel bind format that DAS explains here!
Endpapers were made with this Penguin Classics cover generator (I believe I found the link via Renegade aha). I foiled the endpapers in my cheapo laminator and some foil I had on hand, with some mixed results lolol (dragons and zil got the good ones >.<).
I'm also improving with rounding + backing spines! behold, the prettiest mushroom I've hammered to date :D
Covers were printed on printable canvas, which is now my go-to for all my digitally designed covers. It prints soooo nicely and holds up fairly well to all the folding and gluing I have do to while making the case. I also might try experimenting with sealing them with wax next time!
Finally, blue bookcloth is this gorgeous Japanese linen I bought while on a trip last year! It is SO dreamy to work with, highly recommend. The color is stunning and the iron-on foil and vinyl went down smooth as butter (I was concerned about the little neps at first, but they posed no issue and add so much yummy texture to the cloth :3)
AND THAT'S ALL, FOLKS! This bind was such a joy to make 🥹 Dragons's writing and MYBTM especially has such a special place in my heart - thank you so, so much to dragons for writing and sharing it, and to zil for beta'ing and commissioning art for it! Here it is one more time, for the road <3
In my writing, I try to establish three key features when making a character:
Background
Authenticity
Connection
The first is straight-forward. Where did they come from? Where were they born? Who are their parents, their friends, their lover(s)? A solid foundation builds everything else. Backgrounds can be a dry, bare-bones frame work, but you build off it.
Authenticity is a bit harder to nail. Depending on the context and genre, they need to FEEL human. How would they react to a minor inconvenience, how do they view the world? What dreams would they have, if they were left to pursue them undeterred? I do this personally by drawing from my own experiences, which is why so many of my own characters share traits from me and my past. If I don't have something to draw on, I look up first-hand accounts from others. The best way to breathe human life into a character is by echoing someone real - yourself or others.
Connection is the final piece. This can be family connections, friendships, how they behave around people they love verses strangers and dislikes. But it can also be their connection to the world itself - where do they stand? What parts of them are echoed in their surroundings? Do they connect with a higher power or some greater sense of purpose, or is it something far smaller and personal? It's both their place in surroundings and what tugs at their core strings.
This brings me to (what I personally view) as some of THE best written people in fiction. Not just of the decade, but that I've ever seen. Something that, contrasted with the system I use to build worlds and people, fits so perfectly it drives me a bit insane: Jayce and Viktor.
SO MUCH Is shown with them, rather than told. Every scene they have separate or shared conveys so much information on screen that I still catch things on rewatches and combing through their storyline. They never tell you outright, but I can probably tell you how Jayce or Viktor would react to cold weather. Or stubbing their toe. Or even eating a meal from childhood they haven't had in ages.
There's literally nothing to them that doesn't feel real. *Human.* If I saw them on the street, they'd be a complete creation - they way they were written and performed feels less like characters and more like people I get snippets of. Less like beautiful make believe and more like a complete photograph.
I think that's the reason they're the only fictional characters I've ever been comfortable writing on my own that aren't my own creations. Something about them feels so *whole*. You know where they stand, you understand such little threads of their mind-set and view. I've never seen a pair so well constructed and, unfortunately, I don't think I ever will.
It's part of why I like them so much - props to the producers, voice actors and artists, because they feel real enough to reach out and touch through the screen. It feels like I know them better just through what we saw in Arcane than myself.
Daily reminder that in most other timelines other than the main one in the show, Jayce and Viktor were likely as doomed by the narrative as Jinx and Violet were - to forever end in some sort of tragedy, regardless of circumstance. And a second reminder that the show was likely one of the few universes where they didn't get that ending, and that the solution to that was LOVE.
I'd go as far to say that the driving force in most other timelines that led to a bad end was, unfortunately, violence. We see the start of the 'bad timeline' when Jayce chooses to kill Viktor on the whim of Mage Viktor's instructions. We see the 'intended' ending where Jayce and Viktor fight in the final episode (more violence!), and it's only when something else comes in and gives Jayce time to pour his heart out, do they resolve things.
Mage Viktor's solution doesn't work, because the solution was always love. Not death, not fighting, but the very simple message of 'I love you, down to the mapping of your bones.'
