my mom had Opinions about this growing up. We were allowed to watch "adult" things that were considered "adult" due to sex and swearing, but barred from things rated "adult" due to violence until were much older. My friends thought this was weird as fuck but my mom, when pressed about it, would always say, "Sex is part of the normal human experience for most people. Swearing is part of everyday life for most people. Virtually nobody you will ever meet regularly sees people decapitated and the people who do are really traumatized. I think I know what I'd rather expose my kids to." And a funny thing happens when you open dialogue on these things: kids self-regulate anyway. They expose themselves to adult topics at a pace they feel ready for and in a way that makes them feel safe. Even given this freedom, I didn't watch a sex scene with my eyes open until I was like 18 and didn't say so much as "damn" till I was in high school. Because I didn't feel ready for it. It made me feel icky. But I knew as soon as I WAS ready that I would have a safe and nonjudgmental place to ask questions and understand adult things at a level befitting... you know. An adult. Which is what I was becoming. Which is what all children become.
