Ichabodās arc in No Evil
I have to say, the storytelling in @warlordofnoodlesā No Evil is inspired. Even though itās light on explicit explanations, thereās a lot that can be inferred, especially about the characters. And the implicit storytelling is remarkable. Ichabodās character arc, specifically, fucks me up whenever I think about it.
Throughout the series, Ichabod is always the most devoted to the spiritsā world, almost obsessively so. He was the one who came up with the cure for Vinkle after he fell in the black ick. Heās always interpreting things as omens or signs of some sort, and he seems to have a code memorized for all of it. And despite his own name being āIchabod,ā heās the only one who calls all the other spirits by their full, proper Aztec names instead of nicknames.
Then itās revealed that [EDIT] Ichabod and Calamity were adopted and raised by mortals in Hollow, a very āproperā industrialized town where many people donāt even know that spirits exist. Ichabod still has friends there, who never learned who he really was or where he went, and who are eager to catch up with their old friend. And itās evident that despite his devotion to his new life as a full-fledged spirit away from his hometown, he still has a lot of nostalgia for his old life in Hollow and the people he left behind.
But when they ask where he went off to, he hesitates. They joke and say he must have āwent off to live in a tree somewhere,ā and he realizes that they wonāt understand him anymore. Their worlds are just too different now.
Then Charles attacks, and the other spirits take on their true forms to fight him off and protect the townspeople. And Ichabod is right in the line of fire. He can easily fly away, but that would mean transforming into a bird in front of his old friends. So he hesitates, because in that one moment, due to the context of where he is and what heās feeling, heās too ashamed of who he is and the life he loves so much to show them.
And so, because of that split-second hesitation, he gets consumed by the black ick and doesnāt wake up.
I justā¦ god dammit Betsy Lee, youāre too good at this. Tear me to pieces, why donāt you. This is just too much.
