Nocturnal Fiction

For three weeks the eighty-three said nothing back. The signals went out in primes and Fibonacci spirals, aimed at a moving point 209 AU away, and the silence held.

Then the story leaked — eleven days before the planned announcement — and the discovery stopped being data and became the condition everyone lived inside. Vigils. Market chaos. A colleague's seven-year-old asking if they're coming to hurt us. Earth and the colonies already pulling in different directions.

Chapter 4 of The Auran Sequence.

Scotland, 1746. The glen is ruined — cattle driven off to feed a garrison, the barley rotted, the men dead on the moor or hiding in the heather.

Ailsa Crae, a Glasgow grain merchant's widow, holds the debt on the estate. She could turn the attainted laird off his own land. Instead she offers a contract: her grain and her name to carry his people through the winter, his name on the deed so a Lowland widow can hold Highland land. A marriage, plainly transactional. She is very good at contracts.

What she doesn't expect is a man who won't touch her — because the narrow bargain was hers, and he won't take an inch she didn't sell. She spent nine years being wanted for her usefulness. This is the first time she's wanted for simply being there.

The Tharyn don't speak. They communicate through touch — a bioelectric language, nuanced and grammatical, read hand to hand.

To receive the delegation accurately, Dr. Suki Imaoka has to calibrate her responses to touch with a partner she trusts. The only person on the station who qualifies is Commander Voss — the one she's spent eight months being careful never to touch.

His correction: don't suppress the signal. Be accurate about it.

Then he came back to take over his father's restaurant, and found the kitchen already run by Daniel. The man he walked out on five years ago. Who stopped being angry around year two and settled into resignation instead.

Nobody in the briefing room said the word. They were all thinking it.

She arrived at the manor with one working theory: the widow killed her husband. She revised it within twenty minutes of meeting her.

Six days investigating a death that wasn't natural. A widow who's lied to everyone in the house for three years — except, it seems, to her.

"I find I'm not inclined to do it to you."

Four years of professional rivalry. Five days stranded alone on a relay station.

Day four of five, he says it out loud: "The arguments are the only excuse I've had to pay you this much attention for four years."

The rivalry runs out of places to hide.

Kit Aldous is cast to play both halves of the tragedy — Sebastian in the first three acts, the disguised woman in the last two. They've been on these boards since they were old enough to carry a spear. They know what comes next: the new swordmaster will ask which they really are.

He doesn't.

Three weeks of nightly practice in the dark theatre, just the two of them and the blunted blades and the candles burning down. He learns their body the way a fencer learns a blade — not to own it but to know its truths. He corrects the wrist, the foot, the shoulder. He names what he sees without judgement.

"Most people want to know which you are," Tomas says. "As if it's owed to them."

"I don't want to know which you are. I know who you are. I've watched you for three weeks. That's a different thing."

A pressure failure in the test bay. Two crew down. The coupling array held — the bay sealed exactly as designed — which means the system worked, which means nobody died.

He built the best ship he knows how to build. It had a bracket in it accumulating stress for six months, invisible to inspection, until it wasn't. Both things are true and he's still working out what to do with that.

Three evenings later he calls a debrief. Not a safety review. Just eight people around a table, hearing it said aloud: from Callisto orbit, a distress signal takes forty-three minutes to reach Mars. Any rescue is weeks away. Whoever flies the Marina flies it knowing that.

That night, the MSA analyst finds him walking the corridor alone. She's been embedded in the programme since month one. She asks if he wants company.

"Both," he said. "Probably both."

Ama has been in love with her best friend for four years. Filed under "not this, not now" and "the friendship is worth more." In ordinary life the filing system works. The cottage is not ordinary life.

One week. One bed. No mutual friends, no return journeys, no reasons to leave.

On day three, Jess burns dinner because she was watching Ama read.

At two in the morning, in the dark, with the sound of the water outside: "I've been noticing things. For a while. I didn't know what to do with them, so I didn't do anything."

Mara came to the Carpathian chateau to study the strigoi manuscripts. Three weeks, a research fellowship, exclusive archive access.

The documentation hadn't mentioned Vasile Dracul.

He appeared at midnight, corrected her date attribution by fifty-seven years without hesitation, and spent two hours answering her questions with the certainty of someone revising a personal memory rather than a historical record.

She noted he hadn't blinked once.

"If the mythology weren't folklore," she said, "you would be a primary source."

Something shifted in his expression.

A translation error in 1204 turned "diplomatic emissary" into "human sacrifice." The kingdom has been sending people to the mountain for two centuries. He's been sending them home every spring, baffled, because none of them spoke Calethian.

She found a heat signature at 220 AU moving at a speed that has no natural explanation. She checked it four times. She went home. She came back at 1:47 a.m.

There's a man at work who brings her coffee and knows not to fill her silences. His knee pressed against hers at dinner and she didn't move away. She would have stayed. Except her brain was still thirty-three billion kilometres out, running the numbers.
