What is Scrying?

I know it looks like a typo and what’s really happening, is that we’ve actually been crying as a community, but alas no; “scrying” is a legitimate and archaic form of divination.

Let’s check out the definition of it via Google:

Foretell the future using a crystal ball or other reflective object or surface. “A mirror used for scrying”.

Okay, so Google did pretty well this time and have hit the nail smack on the head with this definition.  Scrying is the act of gazing at a reflective surface and using any symbols that may appear as a way of garnering advice, or foretelling the outcome of certain forthcoming situations, circumstances, and choices.

Yep, finally it's autumn again! On the 22th of September Lady Persephone will make her way back to the Underworld and Mother Earth will take her deserved rest.

Mabon is a Sabbath dated at the autumn's equinox, when also the Eleusinian mysteries were celebrated, and represents a moment of transition: we are crossing into the "dark side" of the year, when the earth is resting after the summer. The nights will become longer and the days shorter, the gods related to the sun are giving more space to the lunar and night gods. We are running towards the end of the year, so it's a good time to summarize and collect the results of what we have done during the year (both magickal and mundane work): it's a great time to focus on the introspection, on the next results we want to achieve and finding the best way to do so.

The magick work can be protective and it's a great time to start meditating again (yep I know that you're not doing that, welcome to the club my fellow), switching from active to contemplate magick.

Some ideas to celebrate

Drink wine and eat bread: they both come from what Nature gives us in this time of the year

Make your own bread with your family, to share a nice moment together

Go outside and take your dog/cat/tortoise/fish for a walk and look at how the colors are changing

Bonfire with family or friends

Make sun water

Eat a lot of nuts, pomegranates and apples

Refresh that protective spell that you've left on the shelf five months ago (I'm calling out myself there too)

Go and gather sunflowers, chestnuts and colorful leaves for your altar and your dining table!

Use a lot of brown and dark red: tissues, tablecloth, your clothes, candles and so forth.

What I'm gonna do

Now some practical examples on what you can do. I usually start feasting from the 20th of September (I need a lot of time to prepare because I don't have much free time lmao) and I take everything off the altar around the 29th.

I started taking out of the closet all the red tablecloths and washed them, then I gathered what I will need the next few days:

Because I want to have a little banquet with my family, so I needed to prepare the food. I will make the bread as well with my mum tomorrow,for the 22nd's dinner.

I had a lot of spare wax from some protective spells that I did this year, so I melted it to make new cute candles to have a little fire on my altar: this year it's gonna rain here so I can't feast outside unfortunately.

I made a little cute drawing of autumn and how I feel it so I can put it on my altar as well.

Then I proceeded thinking about prayers to say to the gods and to the elements and why not, even to Mother Earth that gives us this beautiful time of the year.

I will prepare some homemade cakes (if I don't burn them) as a special offer to the gods, while the bread and water will also go the the wildlife here, especially for the birds.

A pomegranates will lay on my altar for a while as an offering to Hades and Persephone and what happened to the Lady.

On the night of the 22nd of September, I will simply try my best to go outside and thank all the natural elements for everything, pour some offerings to the ground and meditate. Then I will renew my protective spells and all the wards I put around the house, while drinking a nice cup of herbal tea and summarize my Shadow work/magickal work, to see where I should focus more to improve.

What is Mabon?

Mabon (pronounced mah-bon) is a pagan holiday marking the autumn equinox. This day, which typically falls on or around the 21st/22nd, is the first day of fall! This is the second harvest festival of three on the Wheel of the Year. On this day, as well as the Spring Equinox, the length of day and night is equal. In Greek mythology, the Fall Equinox is also the day Persephone begins her descent into the Underworld. Similarly, in Celtic mythology, Mabon was abducted three days after his birth and was imprisoned inside of a stone wall, only to be released later. Mabon is a time to embrace the coming of death, knowing rebirth will come later. It is also a time to bask in the fruits of your labours and to enjoy yourself before the harsh winter comes once more

- meditate. even five minutes every day does wonders for developing self-understanding and your connection to the earth and spiritual realm.

- hone your intent- your most powerful tool. write your desires on a piece of paper and seal it with wax, or burn it (safely) in a candle. since intent is usually represented by fire, stare into flame and imagine it manifesting as your intentions or a kind of familiar that will stay will you and help you in your journey.

- consecrate your food. before eating, consider its origins and thank all that is responsible for bringing it to you. 

- create an altar. this can be as complex or as simple as you like- crystals and candles help, but all you truly need is your intent and any objects that prompt you to consider and value whatever you dedicate your altar to (a deity, nature, a festival, yourself…)

- develop a habit of starting or ending your day with some yoga. as you do so, make sure to thank the sun for rising and for setting, the moon for being so serene and the stars for all the stories they hold.

- connect with the elements. whether you are walking, sitting, falling asleep- balance yourself by acknowledging the elements. for example, notice your breath (air), notice the weight of your body or your contact with the ground (earth), notice your thoughts and emotions, or simply the saliva in your mouth (water) and notice your heartbeat (fire).

- bath magic! this is a favourite of mine simply because it is so versatile- use salts, bath bombs, candles, crystals, lavender or petals in order to clear negativity, cleanse for a spell, honour a deity, help heal yourself, strengthen self love and care, renew intentions and goals…

- practice a grounding exercise- do some research into what kind of grounding you like the most. I usually imagine roots drawing up energy from the earth’s core.

- go outside for the sake of going outside. talk to the flowers and trees and wind. acknowledge the extraordinary complexities of nature- how science and magic flows and interacts to form our beautiful planet.
