Joy Gardner was a 40-year-old Jamaican mother and media studies student living in Crouch End, north London. She entered Britain legally on a visitor’s visa in 1987 and later married British citizen Joseph Gardner, who supported her application for permanent residency.
However, the couple separated five weeks later, and he withdrew his support. Joy then spent three years trying to regularise her status while raising her British-born son, Graeme.
On 28 July 1993, officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Aliens Deportation Group entered her home with immigration officials to deport Joy and her five-year-old son to Jamaica.
She was handcuffed, placed in a body belt, bound at the thighs and ankles with leather straps, and gagged with 13 feet of adhesive tape wrapped repeatedly around her head.
Joy stopped breathing, suffered catastrophic brain damage from oxygen deprivation and died four days later without regaining consciousness.
Detective Sergeant Linda Evans and Detective Constables John Burrell and Colin Whitby were later charged with manslaughter.
Burrell was cleared on the judge’s direction, while Evans and Whitby were found not guilty. No officer was held criminally responsible.
Graeme witnessed the raid and was later reported to have suffered years of psychological trauma. He was 11 when his grandmother, Myrna Simpson, pursued compensation on his behalf in 1999.
He would now be approximately 38 or 39, but little reliable information is publicly available about his adult life or whether the claim resulted in a settlement.
Following Joy’s death, the Metropolitan Police suspended the use of mouth gags during deportations, and the government banned them in 1994. Her case also intensified calls for clearer restraint rules, better training and greater accountability during forced deportations.
A huge shoutout to The Voice Newspaper @thevoicenewspaper for documenting Joy’s story and continuing to be a powerful voice for Black British communities.
More than three decades later, her death remains a painful reminder of institutional racism, excessive force and the urgent need to keep fighting for justice and accountability.

Hazel Scott playing two pianos at the same damn time with ease
Hazel Scott was a musical sorcerer and a civil rights hero. She:
was admitted to Julliard at 8.
was performing in top venues by 16.
pioneered “swinging the classics” and made the equivalent of a million dollars a year doing it.
was the first person of color to have their own national TV show.
went to Hollywood but refused to be cast as a “singing maid.” Demanded and got control over her casting, her wardrobe, and how footage featuring her was cut.
refused to perform in segregated venues and led charges for integration in several northern cities, notably Spokane.
She was brought down by the House Committee on Unamerican Activities, and has been largely forgotten. But she was a sorcerer, and a hero.

Let’s un-forget her.

Ninth picture for @creatingblackcharacters Melanin Beam Challenge; Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind! She's a protagonist who doesn't have a lot of "bells and whistles", she almost "majestic" in a natural and effortless way, while being a very determined leader with a true goal of peace. I tried really REALLY hard to-
1- not let this redesign be "ambiguous", clearly depicting her as Black (with a very dark skin-tone, her hair done in thick cornrows that are pulled back into a ponytail puff, golden brown eyes, visible upper and lower lip, and a broad nose that has a defined angle)
2- vaguely mimic that watercolor style (I'm doing ALL of these edits in MS Paint with a mouse. there are layers now, which is wonderful, and 3D Paint has more resolution and brushes for details, but it is still tedious to work slowly for the end result I want. I finally copy-paste several times into Microsoft Word to use the few art edits available, including certain blurring/grainy filters. that's it. I made those fake "water drip" spots individually until they looked halfway decent)

…to create the timeless
Please get off my page if your a white woman, queer and\or disabled person who genuinely does not believe your whiteness gives you privilege. If you equate addressing racism and calling out the massive imbalance and the mistreatment of poc in communities as bigotry, harssment or "oppression olympics" i want you nowhere near my page. Please learn Intersectionality and stop acting like your marginalized identities absolve you of wrong doing, ability to perpetuate bigotry and your whiteness. Jesus christ. And yall wonder why we don't feel safe or comfortable in "progressive" spaces.
