Bottomless Lakes State Park is located ~15 miles southeast of Roswell, features eight sinkhole lakes formed in gypsum and mudstone units of the Middle Permian Seven Rivers Formation. The lakes are found at the downstream end of a regional aquifer system, which is recharged from the Sacramento Mountains and Pecos Slope. Holliday spent his evenings gambling in the saloon and he seemed determined to stress his health condition by heavy drinking. Holliday also enjoyed the company of the dance hall girls that the partners hired to entertain the customers. The Jornada Mogollon occupied much of southern New Mexico and far west Texas for thousands of years. With the Anasazi and the Hohokam, the Mogollon are one of three native prehistoric cultures and is the largest, spanning 400 miles east-west and 500 miles north-south. Various Mogollon branches have been defined to describe the cultural variation across such an immense area including the Jornada Mogollon, the branch farthest to the east and the group attributed to the Three Rivers Petroglyph site, near Carizozo. The Mimbres Mogollon are attributed to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. New Mexico Indigenous Peoples Mythology- In Navajo Mythology, a skin-walker (yee naaldlooshii) is a type of harmful witch who has the ability to turn into, possess, or disguise themselves as an animal.  “Yee naaldlooshii” translates to “with it, he goes on all fours.” It is one of several types of Navajo witches and is considered the most dangerous. From Apache Mythology, Big Owl is a dangerous giant.  In some Apache tribes, Big Owl also plays a more important mythological role as an early adversary of the War Twins. Gnome Site- Beneath this innocuous plaque 25 miles from downtown Carlsbad lies the site of a second nuclear explosion in New Mexico. Unlike the Trinity Site, this explosion was underground and had a peaceful purpose. My own grandfather was employed for it's construction. The Organ Mountains are at the southern end of the central mountain chain on the east side of the Rio Grande's rift valley. The range is nearly contiguous with the San Andres Mountains to the north and the Franklin Mountains to the south, but is very different geologically. Whereas the San Andres and Franklin Mountains are both formed from west-dipping fault blocks of mostly sedimentary rocks. The Organs are made primarily of igneous rock. The mountains take their name from the granite "needles" in the highest part of the range. US 66 (the Mother Road), was one of the original highways in the U.S. Highway System. It was established on November 11, 1926. The highway which became one of the most famous roads in the United States, originally ran from Chicago to Santa Monica covering a total of 2,448 miles. It become an icon of pop culture and a reminder of simpler times. In New Mexico, it passed through Gallup, Grants, Albuquerque, Santa Rosa and Tucumcari. Until 1937, there was a diversion through Santa Fe and the northern mountains. In 1937, this section was replaced by a more direct route to Albuquerque, where I-40 runs today. Since 1990, artist Ra Paulette has been carving fanciful caves near La Madera. They are all hand-carved. It is rumored that he carved the first cave for $12/hour.
