Ok so thanks for voting on this but i need you to reblog it too
thinkingggg so hard abt an au where percabeth don’t get together for a long time and remain best friends into their adulthood and they date other people and their partners always HATE the other person. annabeth gets a boyfriend who looks suspiciously like percy and this dude is always five seconds away from throwing hands with percy. percy loves ragebaiting her partners im sorry he does. annabeth does the same to his. idc. they DO have sleepovers and their partners are RAGINGGGG about it. they tell themselves they’re “committed” to their partners and they almost believe it but let the other person start dating and suddenly they’re showing their ass so bad and trying to destroy the relationship to get the other person single again.
toxic fatal flaw of loyalty where percy is consciously and happily tempting annabeth into infidelity because her loyalty to him over her own partner is like a drug to him. toxic fatal flaw of pride where annabeth is consciously and happily tempting percy into infidelity because him desiring annabeth more than his partners is like a drug to her
percy: her partners always seem to hate my guts and idk why.
insert character here: yeah it’s ridiculous i mean you guys are friends!
percy: exactly.
character: just friends!

how were so many of the things that were basic writing/plotting advice in Every Single craft book when I was a teenager just completely straight up wrong
the biggest and worst offender I think was plotting advice that encouraged me to build my plot around my characters "desires" or "goals"
protagonists were kind of forced into a flat dichotomy of 'active' (takes actions to further their own goals, thus driving the story) and 'passive' (is acted upon by events beyond their control, moving them through the plot) with 'active' being considered good and passive being considered bad
I think this framework is very locked within a certain cultural viewpoint... specifically of a 20th century western white male. For one thing it assumes a "protagonist" will have a certain level of agency, to have goals and pursue them, overcoming obstacles in the way. It is not very inclusive of characters that don't have much agency.
It also assumes that desire/want = orienting toward or pursuing.
As far as I am concerned, characters don't have goals. They CAN, but these goals aren't actually the functional gears of the plot, and are instead their conscious rationalizations of what's really running the show.
Rather, characters have instincts and drives. I don't like to say "desires" because desire suggests something that is explicit, a thing that the character can attribute their feelings to.
I realized when reading Shakespeare's Othello that interesting characters often can't be understood in terms of "goals" or "desires" because they don't understand what they want or why they want that and they constantly act in ways that are contradictory to what they want or think they want. What a character consciously thinks is a whole layer on top of their actual instincts and feelings, which are primal and buried in traumas and needs and other aspects of creaturehood, and often is a fiction to resolve contradictions and dissonance in the demands of the creature-self. some characters can reflect upon their own thought processes and some cannot.
real humans don't often act rationally to pursue goals, they just do stuff based upon a seethe of inner instinct and the reasons why are post-hoc rationalizations. i like writing characters that reflect this and exploring the ways they do and don't understand themselves, the fictions they use to understand what's going on in there
Love this post because it gets at something I've vaguely felt, which is that often the most interesting characters have some core inconsistency to them (sometimes entirely unexplained). That contradiction feels instinctively real, maybe because it's forcing you to either solve the contradictions yourself, putting more life into the character, or give up and acknowledge the unknowable aspects of other people's minds. (imo Hamlet is like this.)
Whereas a character with perfectly coherent motivations and traits is almost more like a stylization, excellent as a side character or for a particular narrative purpose but not as chewable.
I'm always being reminded of the Hugh MacLennan quote from The Watch that Ends the Night:
“But that night as I drove back from Montreal, I at least discovered this: that there is no simple explanation for anything important any of us do, and that the human tragedy, or the human irony, consists in the necessity of living with the consequences of actions performed under the pressure of compulsions so obscure we do not and cannot understand them.” (274)
And I think that's a really great point about storytelling as well, and tragedy, that characters are also stuck with the consequences of things they can't take back but never really understood. They've become the kind of person who does [action] and they have to contend with that.
Exactly I agree fully!!

waaaay back when I was a cashier in retail we would talk about dumb shit while unloading the truck, and we got to the "what would you do in a zombie apocalypse" me and another worker were like yeah we would just die. End it all, we can't fight or run or shit. I refuse to put that much effort into survival.
And my manager was like no!!!! If that happened, I would drive to find you guys in my truck and we could eat stuff from my wife's garden and I would make sure everyone I know survived!! I would carry you all on my shoulders away from the zombies!!
Anyway, random shout out to that guy. You were too kind for retail management, Devin.
also afterwards everyone who was talking about their cool bunker fantasies were like "Damn, Devin's right, we should also be considering helping people around us." which is the only recorded instance of a retail shift making people better human beings.
That’s exactly why I don’t like most zombie apocalypse stories (or most other post apocalypse stories). They always fall into the trap of Everyone Being Awful.
The idea that societal collapse exposes mankind’s true nature ignores one thing: society IS mankind. We make it, just by being around each other. Social mores and customs aren’t arbitrary rules inflicted on us by some unseen force, they’re our own behaviors and views. We say please and thank you because we want to be kind. We establish charities because we want to help others. We set up garbage cans because we want to be clean. We’re the ones setting the standards and frowning at the people who don’t rise to meet them. We’re the ones who are appalled by the cruelties in our history.
Yes, we’re capable of truly awful things, but we’re also capable of remarkable kindness. We’re capable of more goodness than we give ourselves credit for.
THANK YOU
The problem with nearly every post-apocalypse story is that they take the worst behavior of people during a riot or a natural disaster, extrapolate it to all of humanity, and assume that situation never changes. But even the worst disasters end. Hurricane Katrina looters aren't still looting. And there were far more people helping than looting.
I'm so tired of this assumption that the worst of humanity is "realistic" while the best is cartoonish or childish. Every single time there's a disaster, or a crisis, you see people helping and people risking their lives for others. Hell, we've even had societal collapses before and we've rebuilt civilization every time. The real childishness is assuming all people are, at heart, selfish and uncaring. Because that's how bitter teenagers who have never experienced the world view it.
give me zoey was bullied in high school, but in more subtle ways.
zoey having exclusively fair-weather friends. when they're having fun, it's fun, and she recalls the memories for days . but when days are too long and school hallways are too narrow, she cannot confide in any of them.
zoey being part of trios, except she always feels like a placeholder, like a punchline to a sour joke. and so, since third wheeling is anything but nice, she ends up in bigger friend groups, hoping that would help her fit in better.
instead, the issues repeat, except they're even more obvious. she is ignored and talked-over, included solely because no one wants to be the one who directly tells her to leave them alone.
zoey's mom telling her to stop wearing earbuds so much—you'll damage your hearing—and she thinks to herself, there is nothing good to hear around me anyway. zoey's dad telling her to go out sometime, to stop draining nights by writing until the sunrise—your eyes will shrivel up from staring at the paper—and she thinks to herself, the outside world has nothing nice to offer.
and her parents think she's fine, you know? their girl is this bubbly and extroverted person, jumpy and jittery. when they visit uncles and aunts in other states, she plays with her cousins. during dinners, she still chatters and jokes. sure, her eyebags are more prominent, but she's a teen!
zoey dreams about an escape. there's a period—mid-divorce, when talks of custody cloud any other topic—when she believes living in korea would offer her a new, fresh start. but then she thinks how teens there are likely no different from teens here, and she will always stick out like a sore thumb.
she is destined to be alone. too boring/annoying/weird for her peers, and to her parents a bullet point in the lawyer's office more than a daughter.
anyway, there are these two girls, rumi and mira—
Dsmp in 2026 holla I’m thinking about c!tommy again

mira comm from twitter
A few months ago my mom got our dog a really nice like $60 dog bed that Ellie just absolutely refuses to sleep in because she’d rather be in bed with my mom or on the couch. So my mom gave Josh and I the bed to see if Vincent would like it and it’s an immediate hit, he jumped in as soon as I put it down and won’t move
I’ve never seen this cat knead before and now he can’t stop!

I watched dreamsmp every day since the lmanburg festival and nothing will ever come close to how surreal the exile arc was. People had to start saying c!tommy and c!dream because people on twitter thought that dream was actually abusing tommy and it was getting dangerous??? Tommy would ring the prime bell and there would be THOUSANDS of twitch primes in his chat within seconds. You couldn’t even see the regular chats because there were so many. Every exile stream was genuinely terrifying because you had no idea whether or not Tommy would DIE. Mexican dream showed up. The following stream dream destroyed the entire area and Tommy almost killed himself. The whiplash was fucking insane.
Ooo ooo predebut rumira this predebut rumira that what about predebut zoey whos so scared of fucking up she starves herself to avoid leaving her room at night. Who presents her lyrics like shes at a corporate merger layoff meeting. Whos terrified of mira’s bluntness and rumi’s temper and celine’s standoffishness to the point that she struggles to eat at group meals. A predebut zoey with an eating disorder attached to her need to Earn sustinance. Pre debut zoey who has to learn how to be a person again and not a collection of anxiety fueled stress behaviors. A predebut Zoey who isn’t the glue between them but the over flowing storm drain that they are racing to unclog. A predebut zoey who thinks everyone’s praising her as some huge long running joke and is constantly braced for the punchline. A predebut zoey who has to learn how to be loud again and still flinches at the sound of her own voice. A predebut Zoey who has such bad skin picking that Celine drags her to the doctor and Zoey has a full blown panic attack about the perceived inconvenience to Celine. A predebut Zoey who was never dx’ed with her adhd and sobbed hysterically when Celine got her on medication because she realized How Much Time she lost to it. A predebut Zoey who is just as resistant to opening up but too scared of being the odd man out that she fully fakes a personality for so long it takes her months to figure out whats real and isnt anymore. ‘No more lies’ wasnt just for Rumi.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CTOMMY!!!!!!!!
You're the only character i related That much to. We went through similar things and the fact that after everything it all turned out alright for you gives me hope that maybe im gonna be okay too
The Odyssey but retold as a low-stakes modern adventure of one guy out with his girlfriend leaving the bar with his buddies to do just one (1) simple thing real quick, it'll take like 15 minutes tops, he'll be right back, but then some bullshit happens and the trip keeps getting more complicated as more bullshit keeps happening while he just tries to get back to the bar because he promised his girlfriend that he'd get back and he knows that she's still there because she told him she'd wait there.
And by the time he finally gets back it's almost 3 am and the bar is about to close while she's sitting there stone cold sober, surrounded by 5 drunk guys unsuccessfully trying to convince her to give up on waiting for him and go home with one of them instead. And the guy shows up to proceed to beat the shit out of them before explaining himself to her like hey sorry bullshit kept happening, my phone fell into a storm drain and my wallet got stolen when I was trying to find someone who'd borrow me a phone so I could call and
His girlfriend had been fending off the 5 drunk guys for most of the evening by explaining that even if she was going to ditch her boyfriend, she can't possibly leave without finishing her beer, which she is keeping perpetually full via careful sleight of hand where she's just pouring it back and forth into and out of the pitcher.
However the drunk guys are also drinking, and eventually she can't afford to buy another pitcher for the table so she can't keep up the ever-full beer glass trick. At this point she has to resort to setting up the pool trick shot that she's never seen anyone but her boyfriend pull off, and says she'll leave with whoever manages the shot first.
That buys her another hour or so and then, finally, her boyfriend makes it back. He looks like shit, hair down and just a mess, he's wearing an entirely different jacket that he got from an alley, and barely recognizable—especially to 5 guys who've been drunk for hours now. He lurks for a minute, finds out what's going on, and proceeds to pull off the trick shot first try. Throws the jacket off, fixes his hair with a hair tie his girlfriend lends him, finally looks like himself again, and THEN beats the shit out of them with the pool cue.
yuh i was there, that's how it happened
