“Everyone is suffering in some form or another. If someone is mistreating you in someway, know that the root of their action lies in pain.
We harm ourselves, each other and our environment because we are not in touch with who we really are. We are in touch instead with our conceptions of each other, so there is no real contact, no recognition. This lack of awareness fuels our anger, our resentment and hatred. And we become trapped by it. We live inside our story and the story takes us away from our bodies, away from life, which is never personal.
To breathe consciously is to come back. To notice the sensations of our body and the internal dialogue of our mind is to come back.
When we are present to life, we are less likely to believe that people or situations are our enemies. Even if there was a great misdoing, we are able to see the totality of the picture, the interconnectedness of our issues. Like a single body, a single organism, we see that nothing is on its own, separated and so it makes no sense to attack our own body and expect peace and health.
The more we look into it, we yearn to understand instead of blame. Love is the power of understanding. Understanding transforms suffering to peace.
Having a practice which increases awareness is a demonstration of compassion for yourself. It is an active acceptance of your pain, an embrace from which we can move forth a little freer.
Love starts with us. It is our responsibility to care for ourselves tenderly and then to extend that care and compassion a little further, a little deeper each day.”
