The White Tortilla was one of the first Mustangs to run at Bonneville

If you have never ventured to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, you need to put it on your bucket list. The vast, white expanse is so huge you can see the curvature of the earth, and if you’re the imaginative type, you’ll feel like you’re standing on the surface of the moon. It’s even better when the usual silence of The Salt is interrupted by the rumble of hot rods going way, way over the speed limits we have to abide by on public roads. Number 289 here, called The White Tortilla and built by legendary hot rodder Ak Miller, was one of three Mustangs to run at Bonneville in August 1964, making them the first three Mustangs to ever set tire to salt. This one ran in E Production (and was also listed as #2890 in D Production), and made a few runs chasing the 149.997mph record but never catching it—we don’t have data to show its final speed. The White Tortilla made several more runs in the decade, eventually capturing the class F Production record in 1965.
