Not telling your kid they have a learning disability, chronic illness, mental illness etc. so they can “feel normal” actually does the opposite. They will not feel normal if they do not have the context to understand that their normal will be different from that of their peers.

The amount of times I’ve heard a parent say something like “I’m just not going to tell my son he has ADHD, I want him to feel normal.” HE DOES NOT. HE DOES NOT FEEL NORMAL. HE IS WONDERING WHY HE IS STRUGGLING AND COMING TO THE CONCLUSION HE IS AN IRREDEEMABLE FAILURE.

From a neurodivergent teacher, to parents who refuse to see that their kid is neurodivergent for one reason or another.

YOUR CHILD WILL BE MUCH HAPPIER KNOWING AND GETTING THE ACCOMMODATIONS THEY NEED.

If you refuse to see it or refuse to listen to teachers who are telling you to get them diagnosed, they’ll either:

1) struggle and never know why

2) realize they are neurodivergent much later and struggle to get diagnosed as an adult (it’s a nightmare).

Telling your child they have something special and getting them the accommodations needed to feel normal IS THE THING TO DO AS PARENTS. Neurodivergent kids will feel left out, alien and absolutely NOT NORMAL compared to other kids and will always wonder why they're weird, when they're just special. Get them the help they deserve, for the love of God.
