He can’t help but grin at her expression, showing enough restraint to at least curb any laughter. It was always such a contrast to her regular bravado, the spunk and flare she exuded.

“Are you joking? That was horrible!” Although she does appreciate the compliment, contrary to her reaction.

Indeed, there was a fundamental difference between the two branches – namely, in their mortality. Shutara always felt a vague distaste in leaving these matters in human hands. It was how they ended up with Quincy. In the end, their priorities were too far apart to reconcile, and the divide became so wide it might as well have been unbridgeable. “Yes, I recall those last meetings.” 

“Your predecessors were too interested in protecting dragons for our taste.” True, they had their potential uses – no doubt the witches managed to draw some output from them over the years – but not at the expense of human souls, when they also had hollow to juggle. Hollow, who were vital to the cycle of reincarnation, must always take precedent. It hadn’t been a difficult decision between the two. 

“The only way you’ll find one here is if it managed to migrate from somewhere else. They were hunted to extinction long ago.”

As the other woman continued in, Ninnie couldn’t help but feel a wave of dissatisfaction wash over her. Perhaps it wasn’t intentional, but the shinigami’s comment on those before her seemed to come off as almost rude in the way they were spoken.

At times the protection of those creatures tended to be a rather dull task sure, but she didn’t hate it. It was an important job to her. 

“The formation of witches was brought upon by dragons. Of course they were interested in protecting them.... That has always been our duty.”

Her brows furrowed together at the utterance of the extinction of dragon’s in the East-- her distaste now more evident that ever. Although rogue dragons were a major threat, the truth was most species of dragon were valuable in what they provided society. In fact, most were rather docile and calm in nature.

Did that mean even those were taken out?

He’d anticipated a blush, but he’d not expected to be halted. For this god damn cute ass Witch to silence him and finish the song. Smile spread from beneath her fingertip, waiting patiently for the song’s conclusion. 

“–Permission to speak, Ninnie-chan?”

She turns her face away immediately, too embarrassed to look him in the face after that stunt. Ninnie does however, return her gaze back to him as he asks for permission-- her face still as red as a tomato.

Holy shit, she was actually doing it. As adorable as it was, he quickly cut her off. “Come on Ninnie, I was just kidding. Hanging with you is the only gift I need.” A wink, coupled with finger guns.

“-- Shh okay?”

She immediately covers his mouth with the tips of her fingers, face becoming even redder as it was clear she wanted to finish the song. God he could behave so lame sometimes, but he was so oddly cute all the same.

“You still gotta sing happy birthday. That might make the lack of cake alright.”

“What?! After--” She grumbles as her cheeks slowly become pink, a frown forming on her face as she reluctantly begins to sing after a few moments of contemplation.

“..aren’t you supposed to be nice to me? After all, you missed my birthday.”

“HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW IF YOU DIDN’T TELL ME?! YOU--”
