“BOUND FOR FREEDOM, YEAR FIVE, DAY ONE: “Invitation”
"So. Wanna take bets on which one of us he'll curse out first?"
Sonic stretched his legs out to their toes, his eyes focused on the skylight of the building below.
"That's usually you, isn't it? He seems especially fixated on you lately, at any rate."
Sally tested the strength of her rope, making sure it was sufficiently tight around the rooftop's edge.
Sonic had moved on to his arms, rotating them around to feel out his shoulders. "I am a pretty worthy subject of obsession."
"Only you could make that sound like a good thing," Sally sighed, even as she grinned a little.
"Hey, you make it feel like a good thing, so...." That earned the hedgehog a solid slap on the shoulder before he could finish.
The two stepped out to the rooftop's edge, each carefully observing their target. Sally's gaze did not waver, but her ear flicked just a little. "...what makes you ask, anyway?"
"I mean, you know how Robotnik gets about unveiling these new weapons, right?" Sonic replied with a chuckle.
Sally too let out a little laugh. "Oh yes. It's like a big Birthday Party or something. I'm surprised he doesn't send out invitations, though who he'd even invite is anybody's guess...."
"Right, exactly!" The hedgehog was crouching now, his quills slowly growing sharper. "And I just got t'thinkin', 'doesn't that make us party-crashers?' And that got me t'thinkin', 'If I was him, I wonder which one I'd hate more for ruining my Big Day.'"
The rope held tight as the princess gave another test, leaning over the vast drop waiting for them. "I suppose I should worry about the peculiar way your mind wanders during these missions," she said, "but, lucky for you, your question leaves me with a question of my own."
She looked to him with a devilish little smirk. "Yeah: 'wanna find out?'"
They then took a flying leap off the building.
And as they crashed through the skylight, its broken glass scattering downwards toward the enraged tyrant and his newest evil invention, they were greeted by a terrible roar.
"HOW DARE YOU INTERRUPT MY GREATEST TRIUMPH, YOU PRESUMPTIOUS LITTLE PRINCESS!?!"
"...darn. Should've taken that bet after all."
