âBOUND FOR FREEDOM, YEAR EIGHT, DAY THREE: âWaterâ
âSquirrel Out of Waterâ
For all the strain heâd been under traveling across Chaos Island, Sonic appreciated that even now he could still visit Bigâs fishing pond to unwind for a little bit every so often. How, exactly, had the pond gotten here? How had Big gotten here? The hedgehog had no clue, and it didnât seem as if anyone else (least of all Big himself) did either. Even though it might be nice to have an actual answer about at least one thing going on with the Starfall Islands, though, that much at least didnât bother the hedgehog much. It was here when he needed it to be, and for now, that was enough.Â
So after stepping through the portal to the pond, saying hello to Big, and readying his line, Sonic was set to have another nice, relaxing spell of fishing out whatever odd little objects the pond had to offer this time around. He cast the line, watched it sink beneath the water, and readied himself for when it would-
Ah! A good tug! The hedgehog was ready immediately. âAlright, Mystery Pond, whatâve you got for me this time?â he asked with a sharp grin as he worked the reel.Â
It took a bit of work, but with one good snap, he was able to pull his catch out of the water. It wasâŚa silver acorn? For a brief moment, Sonic was disappointed; heâd caught quite a few of those already. Yet he very quickly realized: there was something-someone-holding on to the acorn as it rapidly rose out of the water on his line.
The familiar squirrel looked more than a bit shell-shocked as she flew out of the water along the arc of Sonicâs pull, her grip on the acorn quite tight. She landed with a splash and a thud right in front of Sonic on the dock. He was immediately at her side. âHow-? What-?â he sputtered, even as he quickly worked to dry her off.
Sally blinked once, twice, thrice as Sonic helped her, shaking her head a bit (and emptying out some water from her ears in the process). âIâŚdonât know,â she replied. âWhatever your questions are, I donât know.â
âYeah, that seems tâbe a running theme around here,â Sonic said with a chuckle. âAre you OK?â
Sally looked herself over for a moment before gently letting go of the silver acorn sheâd still been gripping. âI seem to be all in one piece, at least,â she replied. âAreâŚyou OK?â
Sonic was ready to fire back with a quick âoh sureâ, but then he actually looked at Sallyâs eyes. It made him realize what he was really feeling. ââŚhonestly?â he said, sidling up to sit next to Sally at the edge of the dock, âIâve been goinâ through a lot lately. Like, even by me standards.â
âThose are some pretty high standards.â
âYeah,â Sonic said. âAnd on top of everything else, Iâve missed you, Sal.â
âWell then, Iâm glad I can be here,â she said, leaning onto his shoulder. âHowever that happened.â
âAnd however long it lasts,â Sonic said, leaning back. âCall it a gut feeling, I donât think youâre gonna be able tâstick around long.â
âMaybe not, butâŚthat just means we should appreciate this time together all the more.â
Sonic let out a light little breath. âSmart as always, Sal.â He turned to her with a smile. âSo howâve things been goinâ back at Knothole?â
The princessâ eyes lit up. âOh, weâve been super busy lately,â she said. âDaddy actually just announced this big celebration he wants to hold, andâŚ.â
So they stayed together like that, talking back and forth, laughing, teasing, thinking. Sonic didnât know how any of this had happened, or how exactly it worked, but in the end, he was just glad that they could always be there for each other when they needed to.
