Sephora Saved My Ass
What would seem to ba a dismissible circumstance for others, made me fear for dear life. After the incident with the dong-shaking dude from the metro, I have been paranoid and extra weary of the people I encounter, the trains I take and the road I walk on. I am now also insecure of the clothes I wear. I know I shouldn’t let these perverts dictate what I can and can’t wear in public. And I have always stood my ground on that. But I am at a point where I’m actually terrified.
On the way to my interview this morning, a guy sat in front of the seat beside me in the metro. I looked up at him and he made this face where he raised his eyebrows and nodded with a pout. I dismissed this and continued looking ahead as I waited for my stop.
As I shuffled in my seat to prepare to get off the train, he proceeded to do the same. At this point, I can feel everything’s just wrong. He didn’t even seem as if he was supposed to get off at that stop but stood up anyway. So just as the doors were about to open, I turned and exited through the door at the other end of the car. I thought I lost him as there were many people hurrying to go in and out of the train, but he caught up as I reached the top of the stairs. He started talking to me while being too close. I kept ignoring this but he was walking diagonally, sort of pressing me to move to the side. I continued to ignore him while trying to walk faster. I realised I was walking towards the wrong direction, but I didn’t want to just turn around and make myself look like someone who’s lost on the way. Luckily, I saw a Sephora store. Security guards. Perfect! I immediately went in for shelter. I pretended to look through the products and went to look through the window to see if the creep was still out there. No one. And then, just like in the movies, I saw his reflection staring right back at me with the most menacing look I have ever seen. I was terrified to my bones. I felt my body go numb and I was in a weird state of calmness. I turned around and there he was, on the other isle just behind stalls of cosmetics, smiling as he follows the rhythm of my footsteps.
I should’ve screamed. I should've asked for help. There were many people around me, I shouldn’t have been scared. But I was so terrified that it felt like a moment when I am alone and no one could hear me. He didn’t touch me, and I didn’t know how strangers would react. They would probably just ask him to fuck off, and seconds later, he’ll follow me again. In my head, I was stuck.
Fortunately, one of the guards started walking towards him. Maybe the guard noticed. Or maybe it wasn’t him at all that the guard was looking at. But he started to walk off to the men’s perfume area of the store. I watched him pretend to be a customer for a few seconds before I ran out of the store making sure he doesn’t see me. That’s when I finally called my boyfriend and cried. I cried while I hurriedly walked away and told him what happened.
And just like that, the whole day seemed like a day I was surrounded by predators.
