âA flower is never just a flower.â Nicky told her. âFlowers are symbols of hope, and joy, and love. Theyâre signs that winter is coming to a close, that spring is coming. The world is thawing, new life is blooming. And thatâs just in nature. Thatâs not to mention when someone brings you flowers because of an accomplishment, or because they love you, or because they were thinking about you. And tending to flowers is their own joy. Itâs the joy of taking care of something, seeing your efforts made tangible and getting a reward for them. Flowers are so important.â
âThe first that Iâve seen, at least.â Nicky said, looking up at the vampire. âI guess Iâll have to think of some other way to protect it, then. I donât think it would survive being moved. I canât sit here all day, either.â Not only would it be murder on his back, but he would miss out classes, and his projects, and some meetings that he had scheduled, as well. But he couldnât just leave it to chance that this little flower, this beacon of hope, would get stepped on.
Ciara smiled. âThat was really nice and poetic.â She still didnât get it, but if it was so important to him, who was she to argue. She also appreciated his way with words. âDo you help with the landscaping? I thought people moved flowers all the time. Donât you buy them in little pots at the store?â She honestly knew nothing about gardening but had at least been through a garden section at the store. If she could grow her food instead of hunting it though, she absolutely would. Veganism was biologically not an option for vampires. âMaybe put up a sign?â she suggested. âJust a cup or something would probably blow away anyways.â Ciara was a firm believer in signs. She hated when things werenât labeled or explained.
âWell thanks.â Nicky said, ducking his head. Heâd never really been called poetic before. At least by anyone aside from his husband. He could get pretty sappy where he was involved. But they were mates, so he figured that it was allowed. âOh, no. Iâm a botany grad student, so I take notice of the plants around campus, but I really only tend the ones in the green house. There are certain times that you can move flowers. Or I suppose that I should say that there are certain times where itâs better to move them, because theyâll take the shock of it better. Itâs easier to plant them into the ground or a larger container from the little pots you get them in at the store, than to just dig one up from the ground and move it. Especially when itâs still early in the season.â Nicky realized that his explanation was getting rather long winded. âSee, I would make a sign but I donât have anything to make a sign with and I also fear that no one is actually going to read the sign.â
