a human being possesses twelve biological systems which serve as the foundation of the body, including the cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, lymphatic, integumentary, muscular, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, skeletal, and urinary systems. each operates independently yet cooperatively, sustaining the delicate equilibrium that allows a human organism to live. after lillian's time in captivity in khavabrovsk, a thirteenth system was introduced through an intricate, interdependent network of microscopic machines distributed throughout her body. these constructs function supplementally alongside the original twelve, reinforcing and manipulating them, borrowing their infrastructure to function.
these machines are useless without a method of transport, so lillian's circulatory system was extensively altered, her cardiac output increased and the viscosity of her blood modified to accommodate the constant movement. as such, her muscular contractions run hotter, her bones absorb more force, and her nervous system operates under the constant strain of coordinating both organic and mechanical processes. the micromachines continuously repair minor damage caused by this imbalance, preventing the cascading failures that would otherwise kill a normal human.
under normal circumstances the machines circulate quietly and performe minute repairs, but during excessive trauma or particularly violent engagements the thirteenth system overrides its conventional priorities to a sort of 'survival mode'. rather than repairing tissue in place, the machines dismantle lillian's body at a microscopic level — reducing bone, muscle, and nerve into particulate matter carried by the bloodstream. the swarm then rapidly reconstructs her body at a new location, reassembling every component according to a stored structural blueprint. to an outside observer this appears indistinguishable from teleportation.
