Now a laughing stock, it wasn’t long ago Jeff Fisher was considered to be one of the premiere coaches in the NFL. It takes an elite Quarterback to make that happen and that Quarterback was Steve McNair.

John Elway is far from the first name that comes to mind when thinking about the best running Quarterback in NFL history, and rightfully so. He was not very fast, and was a far better passer than he was a runner. But did you know that he has 33 career rushing touchdowns? This is only 3 fewer than Mike Vick.

Remember when running Quarterbacks were avoided like the plague? Bring us life Lamar! It’s a new day in the NFL. It wasn’t until pioneer Fran Tarkenton’s scrambling ability opened the door for a new style of Quarterback. The running Quarterback. More recently guys like Mike Vick or Lamar Jackson have mastered this style with more and more young players inspired by this exciting style of play.  This list looks back at the 10 best running Quarterbacks in NFL history.

Fun fact: Darrell Green ran a 4.43 laser timed 40 yard dash at 50 years old.

Darrell Green truly was the “Ageless Wonder”. You think a 4.43 laser timed 40 yard dash is slow? This man recorded that time at the age of 50 years old. I can only imagine what the 20 year old Darrell Green could have accomplished in the laser tested combine today.

There is a reason this freak of a man lasted 20 seasons for the Redskins. He was considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL able to track down the fastest running backs or receivers. You won’t find film of anyone else chasing down hall of famers Eric Dickerson, Walter Payton and Tony Dorsett.

Green had an endless motor which was a perfect compliment to his speed.He was selected for 7 pro-bowls, was selected for the 90s All-Decade team, and is a 2 time Super Bowl champion. Darrell Green was also a four time winner of the fastest man competition and the only multiple winner in NFL history to stay undefeated.

Last place you want to be.. chasing after Deion as he high steps into the endzone.

Ask guys like Michael Irvin or Jerry Rice who they think the fastest player ever was. Two guys that are considered to be the best wide receivers in NFL history, and two guys who will tell you nobody could run like Deion. If you wanted someone from the secondary to step up and make a big tackle, don’t count on Deion. He didn’t get paid to tackle, he got paid to eliminate opposing #1 WRs by out-running and out-playing them.

His career was filled with electrifying plays going way beyond his defensive play. Deion took snaps at WR for the Falcons and Cowboys totalling for 784 yards and 3 touchdowns. But that’s not all! Deion is also one of the best kick returners in NFL history recording 5722 yards and 9 return touchdowns.  Deion Sanders 40 yard dash time of 4.21 didn’t even do justice for his speed. He left everyone in the dust.

Don’t mess with Bo.

Oh Bo, I wish you had not retired so young. Bo Jackson was only in the NFL for 4 seasons, but during that time torched defenders earning him the title as fastest running back in NFL history. His combination of speed and strength has been matched by nobody since. Bo Jackson was massive at 6’1′ 230 pounds and was able to run the fastest recorded hand time in combine history at 4.12.

He has also earned the title as the only player to ever earn an all-star nod in two different sports. His speed and power made his transition from NFL to MLB easy. Longevity and volume keeps him off the top 10 running backs, but not for fastest nfl players.

When you beat a Deion Sanders record, you earn the right to high step into the endzone.

Devin Hester created a huge scene when he entered the NFL. Hester became the most feared returner in the NFL within only 1 season became without a doubt the best returner in nfl history.

He was able to return 6 kick returns and 1 punt return for a touchdown during his rookie season which is an outstanding accomplishment for such a young player. Not impressive enough? Add a record breaking 108 yard missed field goal return for a touchdown.

As of 2019, the chances of his records being broken any time soon would be a shocker. Although Hester’s combine numbers are underwhelming, it is Hester and his in game speed that earn him an honorable mention on this list. I can hear it now, “DEVIN HESTER YOU ARE RIDICULOUS!!!”

Chris Johnson is so underrated! 4.24 speed and runs like this.

Chris Johnson’s 40 yard dash record was held for many years before it was broken by John Ross in 2017. He had stints with the Cardinals and Any time he finds space outside and is able to create a 1 on 1 situation, he can turn it into a game changing run.

He is the type of player to get stopped 3 straight series then come back with an electrifying 80 yard run for a touchdown. The Titans offensive line was never dominant while he was the running back, but that just made for more highlight plays.

Bullet Bob Hayes is the only man to ever win an Olympic Gold Medal and win a Super Bowl over a lifetime and that won’t be changing. What is even more impressive is that one of those gold medals involved him breaking the world record for the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.06 seconds.

He was way ahead of his time and destroyed opposing sprinters, so how do you think defensive backs felt? Bob Hayes is the main reason that Zone coverage exists today because there was no man that could run step for step with him in the NFL during his time. This was in an era where passing wasn’t as prominent, so his stats reflect that, but there can’t be a top 5 fastest nfl players list without Bob Hayes on it.
