NFC, your absolute FAVORITE NYC SKA trio was born during the same Bush administration that brought you the joys of American Idiot and Eminem, at local educational staple and former insane asylum, the College of Staten Island. Yes (most) graduated and became the well-adjusted adults you know and love today...🫠🫠
During the group's tenure of Licensed to Ill repute at CSl,NFC saw itself transform from a 90s-esque third wave ska outfit with a full horn section into the grittier skrunge/skacore version of now. This ain't your grandpappy's ska, so leave the sus-penders at home, Ace and maybe consider bringing that jock strap someone strapped on your head last week.
HOWEVER...
In light of our quinceañera which every giiirrll only gets to celebrate ONCE (and Jaime IS hispanic and never got one when he was a girl... so sad), we teamed up with almost all of the original members, including our main horn section, and picked 11 tunes that were all written between 2008 and 2012. Ok, so maybe dig those suspenders and fedoras out the trash, but add spikes or something at the very least.
Alan was always bass, but Jaime used to just play rhythm and lead guitar back then (all pics above pre transition). The band lost all but these two nutjobs after 2013 since it seemed ska decided to jump off a cliff as it does sometimes to get attention like a whiny teenager, soJaime and Alan kept NFC running on fumes knowing ska would probably recover (just maybe be hospitalized for a while).
We hope you enjoy the sounds of our possibly, probably, almost definitely inebriated college selves on these tracks. There's a lot of raw emotion that even we related to hearing them now.
Recorded at CUNY CSI, Version City Studios, and the Institute for Audio Research.
Do you want a part 2?? We have many more songs...

THIS JUST IN: Not From Concentrate’s Bassist and general backend paper-pusher recently decided to utilize his email signature in some recent uploads of NFC’s music to the U.S. Copyright Office. Little did he know that Not From Concentrate would be the top of the list for names. I guess that #tbt Tardis is really doing it’s thing.

New album artwork for Not From Concentrate's forthcoming release on May 4th, 2023!
Stay tuned.
Sorry to be grim on a BEAUTIFUL sunny day here in NYC, but in light of the continued lack of progress in the area of gun control, it felt like the right time to give this tune a video that brought it more to life. Please don't give me any "Pearl Jam did it first," or "POD is so much rawer" or some crap. If songs keep getting written, the problem still exists. Never stop pushing.
The song is called "Too Late." It's actually our only ska tune on the No Name EP. Please don't come for us with pitchforks!! We had a falling out with half the band and took some time to Eat Pray Love or whatever. We came back to our roots so don't worry! Haha. If you're into alt and/or grunge, the rest of the record is up your alley.
It's a concept album that depicts the days leading up to, during and immediately following a school shooting. Writing that EP was very cathartic to me...especially when we're told stuff like fight off an attacker with a window pole if it comes to it??? I love my job, but kinda over people's looks of pity particularly since 2020. Weird enough we finished recording the week before the world shut down that year.
There's a comic, liner notes and band photos that were compiled to go along with it all. Much of it is featured in the video. Fun facts, if you do check out the record, the cover art and info page is my actual math classroom, the back is actual lockers from my school and the student chatter you hear between songs is real. Oh and the record got it's title from the giant NO NAME wall I created for kids to claim their work... some never did. Naturally.
We've been at this a long, long, long time. Our little group that could formed right when the 3rd wave was, we'll waving goodbye. With no more three floors of ska, version city parties, backyard bashes, what have you, we were lost. When we left college most of our members said "deuces," including our drummer. It was then we vowed to never have more than 4 members again and we haven't. While we had our Beatles Sgt. Pepper Era and our Who Tommy Era, we never fully left ska. Every record had at least one track. Well, now we're back full force and ya can't stop us. We're like a rock in your shoe that just won't come out no matter how many times you shake it. NFC IS HERE TO STAY.

Watch "Trombone 101 with Ska Artist Jaime Rails" on YouTube
I started playing trombone about a month ago, so I'm clearly an authority on the instrument at this point. PLUS New York gave me a piece of paper worth 50k with no job to pay for said paper that says I'm THE go to person for all your K--12 music needs. Don't let the guitar, singing or math teachering fool you. This video contains priceless advice on how to become the next top ska t trombonist and I'm giving it to you for FREE. Don't miss my next installment on how to play a trumpet whose valves stick no matter how much ya lube them tubes!!

I started playing a month ago, so clearly I'm now a professional by most standards. Also, New York State gave me a piece of paper that cost me 50k (so you know it's good) a decade ago that says I'm an authority on all instrumental music grades K-12. I'm literally giving away priceless advice for FREE. You're welcome, world. Don't let my guitar/singing + math teacher resume deter you. This isn't your mom's learning video.

As a teacher I’ve been being trained on the HORRORS of the latest AI because our students might “no longer think” and just “type in a prompt.” First off, I can say with confidence these kids don’t even know where to BEGIN typing in the right prompt to get them what they need. But even for those that might, it’s not a 1-2-3 and you’re done game. Here’s some album art I made with DALL-E2. It took tons of reworking prompts to be more specific, or more broad, choosing variations, to guide, and sometimes starting all over again.
Pic 1 if I recall (it was a few weeks ago) I believe I just put in something like “Ska album cover” and took it from there by adding extra things like “checkers.”
Pic 2 I was plesantly surprised with. We actually used this as the art for our last cover (with some tweaks in photoshop of course). Here my promps were “NFC spray painted on train,” “spray paint needs to be orange” “must contain only letters NFC,” so on and on.
Pic 3 started with “Ska band,” I got creepy looking people, so moved on to ska album with checkers, chose some variations and made some edits and got that, which is pretty weird...
Pic 4 was “ska band with horns tripping on acid”
Pic 5 was ska band in the style of Andy Warhol (giving them an artist to work from works realllly well, which is prob why my graffiti one wasn’t so hard). Then I asked it to make it punk ska with checkered shirts. Oila!
It’s fun, but cumbersome. If you have a specific idea in mind, I’d honestly stick to the old fashioned hire someone who can actually give you a product method.
Even though our reach may not be much thus far, it is cool to observe the wide net we cast in terms of who listens to us.
Gotta nerd out about statistics sometime.
i should be doing my homework
