Rena sighed, leaning against the doorframe of the practice room, watching her best friend, Yuki practice her piano piece for the upcoming recital, letting the melodic noise wash over her. As the piece ended, she sighed again, causing Yuki to look up from her instrument at her friend in concern.
"Rena," the slightly older girl said, furrowing her eyebrows worriedly. "I know that you're worried, but Jurina's going to be okay. You just have to believe in her."
Rena shook her head, staring intently at the floor. "I know, I know. I just... I just never expected her to be in a situation like this in the first place... Ever since the accident, the doctors kept saying that she was in stable condition, but it's been two days since they said that, and she still hasn't woken up yet!"
Yuki smiled bitterly, patting the empty spot on the piano bench next to her. At the gesture, Rena obediently walked over and sat next to her best friend. Yuki pulled Rena's head down so that it was resting on her shoulder before stroking her hair tenderly.
Kashiwagi Yuki was probably the most prestigious, talented, yet amazingly kind girl on all of the college campus. A piano prodigy, Yuki had been playing piano since the age of three, and once she got into college, she became the campus idol. Everyone wanted to get close to her or be friends with her, Rena included. Yuki had been her idol ever since she attended the pre-university concert a month before classes started.
The following month, as fall settled in and classes began, there were two violinists who made rather large impacts in the college community as well. Those two being Matsui Rena and Matsui Jurina. Contrary to what everyone thought at the beginning, they were not related by blood, though Rena was a good three years older than the younger. Jurina had been a prodigy herself, and managed to get into college at such a young age. Her peers had been immediately attracted to her and the younger Matsui seemed to have gained a following. Rena on the other hand, went into the university having no confidence in her skills whatsoever, causing others to believe that she was less skilled than Jurina. In all honesty, there was a point in time where Rena had believed it herself.
However, Rena had proven herself to be quite a threat when it was announced that the two Matsuis were the only freshman who were going to perform in the fall recital. Backed by an entire orchestra, the two of them were to play a duet. Rena had been absolutely terrified, and had gone to their first practice completely scared of the younger girl. Fortunately, Jurina had shown to be a very friendly person, doing her best to get closer to the older girl. Everyday, Jurina would sneak up to Rena when the older was doing something else to hug her and occasionally sneak a kiss in. The next thing that Rena knew, she had fallen completely for the younger Matsui, but didn't dare try to do anything.
Especially since Jurina already had a girlfriend. Kimoto Kanon, cello genius, and another prodigy. She was Jurina's age, and apparently, one of Jurina's two childhood friends. Though Rena was jealous of the younger girl who currently held Jurina's heart, Rena couldn't help but love Kanon, who had greeted Rena very enthusiastically when they first met, mentioning how much Jurina talked about Rena. Jurina's other childhood friend was Kumi, or Kuumin, who was the most lovable girl Rena had ever met. Rena's age, kind, selfless, and honest to a fault, Kumi was amazing and Jurina's closest friend. Not to mention that her skills on the electric guitar were unparalleled by anyone in her year.
Rena had met Yuki completely by accident. One day, Rena had wanted to practice violin in one of the college's many practice rooms, and walked in on Yuki practicing piano. Yuki had invited the embarrassed Matsui in and listened to Rena play the violin. Rena also learned that Yuki's mother was the much esteemed Kashiwagi Keiko, Rena's violin teacher. The two of them began meeting in the practice room together from that day forward. Eventually, they began greeting each other outside of the practice room, and once, Yuki greeted Rena while she was with Jurina during break. Jurina had pouted and complained about how much time Rena was spending with Yuki, and the older girls had laughed and invited Jurina to join them. Eventually, Kumi and Kanon would join their daily practices too.
The five of them had been together ever since. Though they had only met fairly recently, Rena had believed that nothing could tear them apart. They were attached by the hip. Even Yuki, who was in the year above them.
Until the accident happened.
A drunk driver had suddenly gotten onto the campus one night, and after that everything had happened in a flash. Rena and Jurina had been heading back from their private lessons and were crossing the road when Jurina suddenly pushed Rena out of the path of the incoming truck. Everything else was a blur.
"Listen, Rena. I know that this is causing you much stress, but Jurina wouldn't want to see you acting like this. The best that you- no, we, can do at the moment is hope for her to wake up." Yuki murmured.
"I'm sorry for making you worry about me," Rena whispered, "It just hurts so much... Knowing that there's the possibility of her leaving me."
Yuki nodded, "I understand... But trust me Rena. Jurina cares for you too much. She won't leave you like this. She's too stubborn to give in."
Rena sighed once more, smiling a bit at the last part. "She sure is..."
She stood up, walking over to her neglected violin case lying on the side of the room. "Okay, I guess it's time that I started or practicing again. I haven't touched my violin in almost a week! God, your mom will be furious!"
Yuki giggled. "Better start practicing then! And Rena, when I go do my volunteer hours at the hospital later, I'll be sure to check up on Jurina then, okay?"
Rena nodded, taking out her shoulder-rest from her case. "Okay. Thank you, Yuki. I'll come to the hospital once I'm finished practicing."
Kanon sniffed, wiping her eyes and staring at Jurina's still form on the hospital bed. She had rushed to the hospital as soon as classes had ended. Behind her, Kumi was staring at both of the younger girls, fighting back tears of her own. Though they were threatening to burst, she wouldn't let them fall. She had to be strong for Kanon.
After composing herself, Kumi got up to walk over and pat Kanon on her back. "Non, I know that you're worried and want to be there for Jurina. I do too. So does Rena and Yuki. But you'll get nowhere by not sleeping. Jurina would get mad if you lose your sanity from lack of sleep, so take a nap. Please." Kumi ended up begging.
Kanon sighed getting up from her kneeling position beside the bed. "Alright... But I'm not leaving this room."
Kumi smiled tiredly, simply glad that Kanon was listening. The girl was usually far too stubborn. "I wasn't asking you to."
"Kuumin, can I lean on your shoulder?" Kanon murmured, sitting down next to her friend on the hospital couch.
Kumi hesitated before slowly nodding her head. Kanon smiled, getting comfortable on Kumi's shoulder and nodding off.
The older girl sighed, staring at Kanon and resisted the urge to bury her face into the younger's hair. She would never admit it, but Kumi loved Kanon, and in more than a "friendship" sort of way. Two years ago, she would have never guessed that Jurina saw Kanon in "that" way too, and that they would begin dating when college began. But Kumi supposed that it was for the better. She was three years older than Kanon, and she supposed that it was better for Kanon to date someone her age.
Still, that never stopped Kumi from getting jealous. She had absolutely nothing against Jurina, the energetic girl was her best friend. Its just that Kumi wanted to be the one for Kanon.
As she continued to stare at Kanon, Kumi suddenly gasped and choked, as if the air had been knocked out of her. She covered her mouth with her right hand, and tried to calm herself, while simultaneously rummaging through her bag for the pill bottle. Finding the bottle, Kumi quickly removed her hand, swiftly drank the pills, and was finally able to relax.
Beside her, Kanon stirred and opened sleepy eyes to look at her older friend. "Kumi? Are you alright?"
Kumi quickly nodded, her right hand forming a tight fist. "Yes. I'm fine, Non. Go back to sleep."
Kanon still looked concerned, but she slowly nodded in return and resumed her position next to Kumi. "If you're sure..."
The younger girl was asleep in seconds.
At the sound of Kanon lightly snoring, Kumi sighed again. She raised her fist before slowly unclenching her hand. She blinked back tears as she stared at the splatter of blood on her palm. 'Who knows how much time I have left...'
She frowned, almost glaring at the the blood. "That was too close..."
"What was?" Another voice asked.
Kumi gasped in surprise, whipping her head around. "Yuki! You startled me!"
Yuki laughed upon entering the room. "I can tell. I came to check up on Jurina before I begin my volunteer hours. What was close?"
Kumi smiled slightly, motioning to the sleeping Kanon with her left hand. "I finally got Non to take a nap, but my phone's alarm suddenly went off. I thought that I had woken her up. It was really close."
Yuki cocked her head to the right. "Really? I didn't hear an alarm..."
"It was on vibrate." Kumi swiftly lied. "Even though it's quiet, it still caused Non to stir so I became worried."
"Ah, okay." Yuki nodded. "I get it. So is there any change in Jurina's condition?"
Kumi shook her head sadly. "Unfortunately not. She hasn't even moved an inch..."
Yuki's hopeful face fell. "Oh..." She bit her lip, anxiously looking at the clock.
"Yuki, if you need to go, you can go."
The eldest girl sighed, "I wanna sit by Jurina's bedside too, though... But I'm so busy..."
Kumi smiled reassuringly. "It's fine, Yukirin. She'll still be here when you're done..."
Yuki sighed. "Alright... But I'm stopping by as soon as I'm done!"
Kumi nodded, motioning to Kanon leaning on her shoulder. "Don't worry. We'll be here the whole time. I'll let you know if anything happens."
Yuki smiled gratefully at her friend. "Thank you, Kuumin. I'll be in room A203 if you need anything. Just upstairs."
And with that, the older girl slipped out into the hall.
