Everything from my initial sketch, especially the facial expression, to the colors to the caption were incredibly frustrating to put together. The Fyodor piece, which this one is a sort of companion to, was much easier to complete.

I went through two (2) different color variations for this piece. One had almost everything in color, and the other had only the objects’ outline in color. Hated it. Happy with the final decision though :)

Drafted multiple captions and finally settled on this one. It’s a little crueler, I think, than Fyodor’s.. “May the world’s light fall on you gently, even if your hands have been cruel” was my first idea, but it didn’t feel right. His progression is still because of the choices he makes, I guess? It sounds sooo silly, but so many initial decisions made this piece feel inauthentic or untrue to my thoughts on Dazai as a character.
