Tips for wring amputees: its ok if your amputee can't repair their own prosthetics
There's a trope in fiction for amputees to always be these mechanical geniuses who can make and repair their own prosthetics, endlessly tinkering away and improving them. This isn't a particularly trope, and i dont think its harmful or anything, but in reality, prosthetics are REALLY, REALLY complicated, and a lot of amputees cant do their own repairs. And thats ok. Like, prosthetic creation and repair is way, way harder than I think people expect. Well outside the skillset of your standard mechanic, handy man or craftsperson.
People who make and repair prosthetics are called prosthetists. To become a prosthetist, most countries around the world today require you to have completed a bachelor's degree in specifically in prosthetics and orthotics, which covers not only how to make a prosthetics (and orthodics) but a great deal of medical knowledge, physics, how different forces impact "non-standard" bodies, the additional biological wear-and-tear that comes with being an amputee and so much more. This will qualify you to do the job of fitting/making the prosthetic socket (the part that attaches to your body) and putting premade components together to make a functioning device. On top of this, many prosthetists are also expected to have artistic skills, sewing skills, good physical strength and dexterity, IT skills, and more recently, knowledge of 3D modelling and printing.
You want to make all the high-tech components the prosthetists put together to make the full prosthetic? The requirements for that vary country to country, but most will require at least some level study in the field of engineering and/or medicine, on top of what was already required for the prosthetics course.
The reason for all this is because even "basic" prosthetics are extremely finicky, and messing up one thing will have a domino effect on the rest of the body, especially in more complicated prosthetics. It can also result in people getting severally injured if anything is even slightly off. many leg amputees for example end up with spinal issues due to extremely minor issues with their prosthetic that weren't caught until years later, and by then the damage had been done.
Some amputees do learn to do basic repairs. This is most common in places like the US, where a visit to the prosthetist can cost hundred to thousands of dollars (depending on your insurance), but it's also quite common in rural parts of countries like Australia, where cost isn't an issue but access is due to vast distances between major cities. I was personally in this category; as a kid, my nearest prosthetist was 6 hours away. My prosthetist was able to teach my dad, who later taught me, how to do some of the simple repairs, but we still needed to go in every few weeks for the more complex stuff (Kids prosthetic need more adjusting than adults because they're still growing. Also I was rough on my prosthetics and broke them a lot lol).
But even after being taught how to do repairs and having my prosthetics for 20+ years, I only ever did these sorts of repairs to my below-knee prosthetic. I will not do any repairs of any kind to my above knee leg, which is much more technologically complex. Every time I tried, I made it worse to the point where the leg was unusable. I just leave those repairs to the guy who went to university to learn how to do it, and sometimes even he needs to send it off to someone with even more specialist knowledge when it's really badly messed up lol. Last time that happened Australia post lost the package. Not really relevant to this post, I just find the idea of it being sent to the wrong place by accident hilarious, it was one of my more realistic legs too so someone probably had a heart attack when they opened that package lmao.
Anyway, back on track lol.
This isn't even touching on the fact that on some more advanced prosthetics, many features are actually locked behind a security barrier only prosthetists can access. My prosthetic knee has an app on my phone I can pair it to, that allows me to change certain settings and swap between certain modes for different activities that tell the leg to change its behaviour depending on what I'm doing (e.g. a mode for running, a mode for cycling etc). but most of the more in-depth settings I can't access, only my prosthetist can, and he can only gain access to those settings with a security key given to him by the manufacturing company that requires him to provide proof of his credentials to receive it. I don't really agree with this btw, something about being locked out of my own leg's settings makes me feel a bit of an ick, but it's set up like this because people used to be able to access these settings and they would mess with things to the point their leg was virtually unusable. Because altering one setting had a domino effect on all the others, and a lot of folks weren't really paying attention to what they were messing with, all their prosthetists could do was factory reset the whole leg, which causes some issues too. Prosthetic arms are often similarly complex, as I understand it and have similar security barriers in place for more advanced arms. I don't know for sure though, so take that with a grain of salt.
All this to say these are incredibly delicate, finicky and complex pieces of equipment. There's nothing wrong with having a techy amputee character who can do their own repairs, but in reality, that is pretty rare, and its ok to have your character need to see a prosthetist or someone more knowledgeable than them. It's a part of the amputee experience I don't see reflected very often in media. In fact, the only examples I can think of in fiction (meaning not stories based on real people) where this is reflected are Full metal alchemist.
technically I think Subnautica Below Zero also mentions prosthetists are a thing in that world, but its a very "blink and you'll miss it" kind of thing...in fact I did miss it until my last playthrough lol.
Hi, Iâm a leg amputee and also just graduated from (American) prosthetics and orthotics school, and I wanted to give my perspective! In the US, you need a Masterâs in Orthotics and Prosthetics, a 12-month prosthetics residency, and a three-part exam to get certified as a prosthetist. If you want to do orthotics too, you need to do another residency and take another certification exam.
OP is exactly right about all the things that go into prosthetics education and why people generally donât do their own repairs! Alignment is tricky, and if you donât know what youâre doing, you can really mess things up and get hurt. And even for amputees who actually are certified prosthetists (being an amputee yourself seems to be a fairly common reason to get into this field), it can just be helpful to have another person involved. I know how to take a cast of someoneâs leg, but that doesnât mean I can contort myself into a position to apply the right pressures on my own leg to get a good cast. And when I was working with a classmate to make a new prosthesis for myself, there were adjustments that I could theoretically have made myself, but that would have required taking my old leg off, putting the new one on, figuring out what adjustments I needed, taking the new leg off, old leg back on, go make adjustments, old leg back off, new leg back on, see if the adjustments fixed the problem, etc. It was much more efficient to just talk through the adjustments with my classmate and then have her do them while I waited.

Culture is defined by a collection of morals, ethics, traditions, customs and behaviours shared by a group of people.
Hierarchy and Social Structures
Within every culture, there is a hierarchy. Hierarchies are an important part of any culture, usually do ingrained that one within the culture wouldn't even question it. Hierarchy can be established either by age, gender or wealth and could even determine roles within their society. Sometimes hierarchy can may be oppressive and rigid whilst other times, ranks can intermingle without trouble. You should consider how these different ranks interact with one another and whether there are any special gestures or acts of deference one must pay to those higher than them. For example, the Khasi people of Meghalaya (Northern India), are strictly matrillineal. Women run the households, inheritance runs through the female line, and the men of the culture typically defer to their mothers and wives. Here are a few questions to consider:
How is a leader determined within the culture as a whole and the family unit?
Is the culture matriarchal? Patriarchal? Or does gender even matter?
How would one recognise the different ranks?
How would one act around somebody higher ranking? How would somebody he expected to act around somebody lower ranking?
Can one move socially? If not, why? If so, how?
Traditions and Customs
Traditions are a staple in any culture. These can be gestures or living life a certain way or to the way a certain person should look. Traditions are a personal detail to culture, they are what make it important. Tradition can dictate how one should keep their home, run their family, take care of their appearance, act in public and even determine relationship. Tradition can also be a double edged sword. Traditions can also be restrictive and allow a culture to push away a former member if they do not adhere to them, eg Traditional expectations of chastity led to thousands of Irish women being imprisoned at the Magdelene Laundries. Customs could be anything from how one treats another, to how they greet someone.
How important is tradition?
What are some rituals your culture undertakes?
What are some traditional values in your world? Does it effect daily life?
Are there any traditions that determine one's status?
Values and Opinions
Values and Opinions are the bread and butter of any culture. This is the way your culture sees the world and how they approach different life hurdles. These may differ with other cultures and be considered odd to outsiders, what one culture may value another may not and what opinion another holds, one may not. There will be historical and traditional reasons to why these values and opinions are held. Cultures usually have a paragon to which they hold their members to, a list of characteristics that they expect one to if not adhere to then aspire to. The Yoruba people value honesty, hard work, courage and integrity. Here are some questions to consider?
How important are these ethics and core values? Could somebody be ostracised for not living up to them?
What are some morals that clash with other cultures?
What does your culture precieved to be right? Or wrong?
What are some opinions that are considered to be taboo in your culture? Why?
Dress Code
For many cultures, the way somebody dresses can be important. History and ethics can effect how one is meant to be dressed such as an expectation of chastity, can impose strict modesty. While other cultures, put more importance on details, the different sorts of clothes worn and when or what colour one might wear. The Palestinian people (٠٠اŮŮŮŘą ŘĽŮ٠اŮبŘŘą Ř ŮŘŻ ŮŮŮŮŮŮ ŘŁŘعاعا) denoted different family ties, marriage status and wealth by the embroidery and detailing on their thoub.
Are there traditional clothes for your world? Are they something somebody wears on a daily basis or just on occasion?
Are there any rules around what people can wear?
What would be considered formal dress? Casual dress?
What would happen if somebody wore the wrong clothes to an event?
Language
Language can also be ingrained as part of a Culture. It can be a specific way one speaks or a an entirely different language. For example, in the Southern States of America, one can engage in a sort of double talk, saying something that sounds sweet whilst delivering something pointed. Bless their heart. Arts, Music and Craft
Many cultures are known for different styles of dance, their artwork and crafts. Art is a great part of culture, a way for people to express themselves and their culture in art form. Dance can be an integral part of culture, such as cĂŠilĂ dance in Ireland or the Polka in the Czech Republic. Handicrafts could also be important in culture, such as knitting in Scottish culture and Hebron glass in Palestine. Music is also close to culture, from traditional kinds of singing such as the White Voice in Ukraine and the playing of certain instruments such as the mvet.
Food and Diet
The way a culture prepares or intakes or treats certain foods are important to a culture. In some cultures, there is a diet yo adhere to, certain foods are completely banned. With Jewish culture, pork is prohibited along with fish such as sturgeon, along with shellfish and certain fowl. Meat must also be prepared in a certain way and animal byproducts such as dairy, must never be created or even eaten around this meat. This is known as kosher. The way one consumes food is also important to culture. In some cultures, only certain people may eat together. Some cultures place important on how food is eaten. In Nigerian culture, the oldest guests are served first usually the men before the women. In Japanese culture, one must say 'itadakimasu' (I recieve) before eating. Culture may also include fasting, periods of time one doesn't intake food for a specific reason.
What are some traditional dishes in your world?
What would be a basic diet for the common man?
What's considered a delicacy?
Is there a societal difference in diet? What are the factors that effect diet between classes?
Is there any influence from other cuisines? If not, why not? If so, to what extent?
What would a typical breakfast contain?
What meals are served during the day?
What's considered a comfort food or drink?
Are there any restrictions on who can eat what or when?
Are there any banned foods?
What stance does your world take on alcohol? Is it legal? Can anybody consume it?
Are there any dining customs? Are traditions?
Is there a difference in formal meals or casual meals? If so, what's involved?
Are there any gestures or actions unacceptable at the dinner table?
How are guests treated at meals? If they are given deference, how so?
Fine then *changes my character design so that my hair that was previously tied back either to show youthful naivety or refined countenance is now hanging looser to signify the slackened grip I have on my emotions and moral compass* make me your villain
So my problem with most âget to know your characterâ questioneers is that theyâre full of questions that just arenât that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)Â Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If Iâm doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought Iâd share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:Â
What is the characterâs go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)Â
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)Â
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ânormalâ for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes theyâre wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)Â
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ânormalâ even look like for them.)Â

How do you create laws and rules for building fantasy worlds? I have a hard time defining these things, especially as a beginner. Do you have any ideas to help me?
Hi, thanks for asking and so sorry for the delayed response. Creating laws and conventions for your fantasy world is a fascinating aspect of storytelling, though the process can be difficult. Here are some ideas to help you get started:
Define the world's purpose. What kind of stories do you want to tell in this world? What themes, genres, or tones do you want to explore? This will help you determine what kind of rules and laws are needed.
Establish a foundation. Decide on the basic structure of your world, such as its geography, climate, cultures, and magical systems (if applicable).
Determine the rules of magic. If your world has magic, define how it works, its limitations, and its consequences to maintain consistency and balance.
Create a hierarchy of laws. This can include physical laws (gravity, physics, etc.), magical laws (if applicable), social laws (cultural norms, taboos, etc.), and political laws (governance, laws of the land, etc.).
Consider the consequences. Think about how these laws and rules will impact your characters and the world.
Be consistent. Stick to your established laws and rules. Consistency is key to creating a believable world.
Leave room for flexibility. Don't be too rigid. Allow for exceptions, surprises, and evolutions in your world. This can bring unexpected plot twists or force your characters to think on the spot and come up with new solutions or plans of action.
Keep track of your world-building. Write down your laws, rules, and lore to keep everything organised and consistent.
Here are a few questions and guidelines to consider when defining the laws and conventions of your fantasy world:
Physical Laws:
What is the nature of time and space?
How do the laws of physics differ from our own world (e.g., gravity, motion, energy)?
Are there unique natural phenomena (e.g., magical energies, elemental forces)?
Magical Laws:
What is the source of magic in your world (e.g., innate, divine, arcane)?
How is magic accessed and controlled (e.g., spells, incantations, rituals)?
What are the limitations and costs of using magic (e.g., exhaustion, corruption, moral consequences)?
Social Laws:
What are the cultural norms and values of different societies in your world?
How do social hierarchies and power structures function (e.g., monarchies, democracies, tribes)?
What are the customs and taboos surrounding magic, technology, or any other sensitive topics?
Political Laws:
What forms of governance exist in your world (e.g., kingdoms, empires, city-states)?
How are laws created, enforced, and punished (e.g., trials, punishments, rehabilitation)?
What are the relationships between different political entities (e.g., alliances, rivalries, vassalage)?
Remember, world-building is an iterative process. Don't be afraid to make changes and adjustments as your world evolves, and feel free to add to or modify the questions and guidelines to suit your story and your world. With both positive and negative aspects to their personalities, charming characters can be difficult to write convincingly.
Whether you're writing a romantic love interest or a compelling con man, here are some examples for giving your charming characters depth.
How do they behave?
Attentive listeners: they pay close attention to people around them
Take pride in their appearance
Are happy to share personal space
Speak with a strong voice and an energetic tone
Are often hospitable and give off an air of welcome
Always give the impression that they are happy to see you
Demonstrate empathy
How do they interact?
Have a firm handshake and make strong eye contact
Are often encouraging
Compliment freely
Use humour to create a fun atmosphere
Communicate physically (through touch and gesture)
Make a point of using a person's name
Initiate conversations
Describe their body language
Have a relaxed stance with a straight and confident posture
Inclusive and attentive
Mirroring: they will mirror the body language of the person they are interacting with
Will lean forward to show attention
Lightly touch to create connection
A slight head tilt to show interest
Rarely cross their arms or legs

The positive aspects of charm
Charming characters put people at ease, praise them freely, and boost their confidence. They make friends easily, talk their way to favourable resolutions, and are often the centre of attention.
They have impeccable grooming, conveying trustworthiness and concern for others, leading to a sense that they have your best interests at heart.
The negative aspects of charm
A charming character can manipulate others for personal gain. They can be overbearing, exerting their will on less confident individuals.
Their charm often draws focus, making others feel inferior, making them perfect for a protagonist to exhibit personal growth, or for a villain that a reader will fall in love with.
Pain can be an interesting emotion to write about. It gives authors the liberty to merge their characterâs emotions and surroundings to create beautiful metaphors and graphic descriptions that draw their readers in and convey their characterâs struggles. However, if done wrongly reading your descriptions of pain can feel like a chore to your readers. Unsure how to accurately describe pain in your writing? Here are some tips to help you get started.Â
Use The Five SensesÂ
As humans, we possess five senses that dictate our reactions to the world around us. When writing, it is important to use these five senses rather than just relying on what your character can see. Talk about the sound, the smell, the taste, and even the feeling.Â
If your character just got burnt, talk about the sound of sizzling flesh and the slight numbness they feel. Mention the terrible smell of burnt flesh, and make your character feel dizzy with fear as their eyes finally land on the horrific wound.Â
Internal bleeding makes people spit blood and taste iron and partially healed wounds feel itchy and irritant.Â
There is so much more to pain than what you see, and simply talking about your characterâs wounds isnât nearly enough to make your readers wince in second-hand pain. In fact, they are more likely to skim your passages in boredom.Â
Show your readers what your character is experiencing, and then go on to describe their reaction to this situation.Â
Build It Up, Then Break It DownÂ
Pain doesnât just suddenly come from nowhere. It starts with something small, blossoms, and then spreads. Your character wonât just suddenly get a third-degree burn the size of a baseball by leaning against a hot steel wall for the briefest of seconds. It starts with a light reddish-brown mark, then darkens, maybe even blisters.Â
You canât go from 0 to 100 in one sentence. You need to build it up and show your readers how your characterâs pain was found. Then, break it down.Â
Pain doesnât come from nowhere, but it doesnât suddenly disappear either. Show us how your characterâs wound heals. Does the wound mark from where they hurt their knee turn into an ugly brown shade for a couple of weeks? Do their burns gradually fade from red to pink, or turn darker?Â
Itâs important to show your readers the aftermath of your characterâs pain. A character who just had a bullet pulled out of their shoulder with a hot knife canât suddenly just jump up and start firing at the enemy with perfect aim.Â
You donât need to overdo it and constantly mention their wounds during the healing stage, but something as simple as âher bandages uncomfortably scratched at her back every time she lifted her hand to eatâ or âhis fingers subconsciously shifted to run over the remains of his burn mark even as his eyes remained trained on the blackboardâ will suffice.Â
How Does This Affect Your Character?Â
Physical pain aside, wounds can also have an effect on your characterâs dynamics with others as well as your plot.Â
Itâs important to take into account how they got this wound, how the other characters might react to it, and internalised conflict caused by it. Maybe your character injured their fingers during a game of volleyball and now theyâre staring at their final exam paper with tears of frustration brimming their waterline because it hurts too much to write.
Maybe your protagonist suffered a small burn while sneaking out to go to their friendâs house and their parent or mentor saw it. Or maybe your protagonist won against the antagonist but suffered a grave injury to their legs and now cannot fight during the next confrontation, resulting in a chaotic outbreak at their headquarters.Â
Think about the internal as well as the external damage your characterâs wounds can cause, and then use that as a plot device to further your book.Â
Do Your ResearchÂ
Itâs very important to accurately portray your characterâs level of pain and consider whether or not they would realistically incur such injuries from such a wound. When writing about a characterâs wound or pain consider doing some research about that type of wound.Â
Here are some things you need to check when researching the wound type:Â
How much blood would they loose with this type of wound?Â
What are the side effects?Â
Could this be fatal?Â
How long will it take to heal?Â
How long does it take for a wound to get to that extent? (for example, if youâre writing about a third-degree burn, research what it takes for a burn to be considered third-degree).Â
What are the major veins, arteries, and other important body parts in that part of the characterâs body? For example, if your character is supposed to be injured on their arm but itâs not supposed to be serious, you need to consider whether the wound could realistically have ruptured their radial artery, resulting in death.Â
Will there be any scarring? What about any long-lasting wound marks?Â
You could also take a look at historical events similar to the one youâre writing. For example, if youâre writing about an assassination attempt consider researching the most historically renowned assassination techniques.Â
Itâs also a good idea to ask your families and friends about their experiences with the type of wound youâre writing about (so long as itâs not a sensitive topic). Maybe you have a cousin who suffered a third-degree burn once or a classmate who has a scar from a graphic wound across their arm.Â
