Here's the link to the survey I conducted on Social Media.
Week 5. Social Media Survey.
So for this weeks blog post, I had to conduct a survey regarding Social Media.
I chose to have six varied questions, including:
1. Which kinds of social networking do you use? 2. How often do you visit social networking sites? 3. What do you most often use social networking sites for? 4. Have you any had any issues with your privacy on social networking sites? 5. Would you consider yourself addicted to a social networking site? 6. Have you ever been a victim of cyber bullying? I posted the link to my survey on Facebook, and with the power of social networking, got 30 replies to take results from. Some of the results were surprising, and then some not at all.
No surprises on the first question, with Facebook being the most popular form of social networking with a result of 93%. This was followed by Instagram at 53%, then twitter at 26%. Only one person answered that they did not use social media.
33% of those surveyed said that they check their profiles daily, with 23% saying that they check it hourly.
Not surprisingly most said that they use social media for catching up with existing friends, at 73%. It was followed by photo sharing, stalking, and networking as the second most common uses, all at 7%.
In regards to increasing concerns about our privacy whilst online, it was surprising to find that majority of the sample had, had no issues with their privacy (76%).
An area I would want to consider researching further into for my essay, its that of the physiological effects of social media on people. Especially since 50% of those surveyed considered themselves to be addicted to a social networking site. I also wondered what peoples experiences were with cyber bullying, as that has been another area of concern, especially with school aged children. Having grown up in this era of social networking, I thought it may have been prevalent amongst my facebook friends from school, who may have taken the survey. However, 70% of the sample said no, that they had never been cyber bullied. The physiological effects of social media and social networking would definitely be something that I would consider pursuing. People being addicted to these websites, and how it affects a persons, real life social world would be of interest to me.

Creative Commons Search is a website that allows you to search for images that are published under a creative commons licence. The site searches image sites (Flickr, Google images, etc) and finds images aren't copyrighted, rather have a creative commons licence. This is a perfect website to use if you are searching for images to use in a blog, assignment or website, as you wont need written permission to do so.
My Experiences with Technology..
 * How long have you been using these communication technologies?
I remember first using a computer when I was in Grade 1 (2000). The computer was very basic, and to my recollection, was only used for basic typing activities. I remember getting my first computer when I was 11 years of age, and my first mobile phone and iPod when I was 13 years old. So I have been using technology for roughly 13 years.
* What influenced you to start using these particular technologies? How did you find out about them?
My friends and school were the major influence on my use of technology. My school introduced me to the use of computers, whereas having a phone or an ipod became a trend amongst my friends, which was how those technologies were introduced to me.Â
* Is privacy an issue for you when using new technologies? What do you think of companies like Facebook and Google who collect information about their users?  (How do you deal with issues around privacy?)
Privacy hasn't been too much of an issue for me when using new technologies. I use both Facebook and Instagram, which of course have thousands of users.
Both sites have to option of having a private or open profile, where you are able to choose who you have as a friend or who follows you. There are also settings for which you can choose who sees your posts. These settings make me feel a lot safer when online, knowing that I can ensure my privacy.Â
In the case of Google, and their collection of personal information, I think it is starting to borderline an invasion of privacy. I, myself have noticed whilst browsing, that advertisements are sometimes coincidentally tailored to my particular interests. For example, I get a lot of horse related emails through my Gmail account, and I usually find that the advertisements that pop up on my sidebar will also be horse related.
Have a look at this!
This video is showing the rise of new technology and how it is ever changing. The days of reading a newspaper or a paperback look to be numbered with the rapid changes in technology. It'll be interesting to see where we will be in another 10 years time!

Welcome.
HI! My name is Gabrielle Brown, and welcome to my New Communications and Technologies blog! I'm 20 years old, from Brisbane, and am in my first year of Studying a Bachelor of Business and a Bachelor of Communications. - Although I'm not certain of what I want to major in yet, I have an interest in Public Relations, Marketing and Human/Employment Resources.
Outside of studying I enjoy riding horses competitively, music, music festivals, trying new things and the beach.
I chose New Com Tech as I thought it looked like an interesting course. I have my own Tumblr account and have been blogging for a little while, so I would love to expand on those skills. I also think that any technology skills I may gain in this course will be a great asset to any career path I may choose.
