Nessian: Bathing (this isnât dirTY)
As darkness enclosed the Illyrian camps, every warrior soon let their eyelids fall. The light on top of the mountains began to extinguish one by one, leaving Nesta to sit in the communal bathroom, staring at the largest bathtub with shaking hands. She blinked rapidly, trying to rid her mind of the terror that flooded it daily. The hard planes of her face were slicked with sweat, and her steel eyes were locked on that gods-damned tub. She decided to take a step forward, wrapping her thick bathrobe around her thin body. Her mind was stepping into overdrive, imagining the Cauldron swallowing her whole along with Elain-
âNo,â she snapped at herself angrily, marching up to the tub to turn it on. Her muscles were extremely sore from training, and she needed this bath. She could have really used a drink, but Cassian hid all of the alcohol in the tallest shelf in the cabin. She cursed him for it (not to mention locking him out of the house for 2 days), but deep down she knew why he did it: she had a problem, and it needed to be fixed. âItâs just a fucking bathtub,â she muttered, feeling the warm water and splashing it around. She made sure the water was warm enough for her standards, which was usually scalding because the Cauldron was so cold, and undid her robe.Â
Her body was no longer slim, feminine body she once had. No, now her body was a skeleton with skin. Her body was hard angles, with her spine easily visible, and her ribs for display for all to see. Cassian had always left out food for her, and while it was cooked well and looked appetizing, Nesta could barely eat. He never pressured her into eating, though anyone with eyes could see how worried he was about her. Though he sometimes wanted to force food down her throat, he knew it took time to heal. While the camps were the catalyst in her healing, she was just beginning to eat more.Â
She stepped into the bath, and instantly, her sore muscles were soothed. Though her mind was beginning to panic, she ignored her thoughts and started to scrub her body down gently. It was the only she could from having a full-on panic attack. âItâs just a bath,â she chanted, quickly rubbing her body. However, as the smell of lavender flooded into her nose, the training seemed to catch up with her, because in an instant, her eyes were shut as well, and small snores were escaping her mouth.Â
Elain looked to Nesta helplessly as she was thrown into the Cauldron, the King of Hybern looking on with an amused expression. Nesta thrashed against the guards, her entire being wanting to rip Elain from this. She knew that no matter how it ended, Elain would never be truly happy. If she died or if she became Fae, she would lose Greyson. She wouldnât get her happy ending, and it was because Nesta couldnât protect her.Â
As Elain emerged from the Cauldron, her wet body spilling over the edge, she didnât move. Not until the red-headed demon spoke, claiming her as his own. Nesta growled at him, which unintentionally drew the King of Hybernâs attention to her. âPut her in,â he ordered, smiling cruelly at Nesta. She fought the guards as much as she could, pushing and shoving as much as her human body could. However, her attempts were futile as they carelessly placed her in, surrounding her in black. In nothing. And, it petrified Nesta to no end.
âNO! NO!â Nesta screeched, her eyes slamming open and examining the black and cold water beneath her. Tears began pouring from her eyes as her body convulsed, her heart beating erratically. She didnât realize the warm hand on her back and underneath her legs, pulling her out of the tub and placing her on the floor. The warm body ignored the punching and kicking of Nesta, wrapping her back into her robe and holding her head against their chest.Â
âYouâre not there, youâre okay, youâre safe, youâre alright,â the voice was stupidly calming, though Nesta couldnât place a bet on whoâs voice it was. All she knew was that it was slowing her heart rate, and helping her head level out. As the voice soothed her, her vision slowly came back, which aided in figuring out who the mysterious body was.Â
Her body stopped shaking, though the man (she now figured out) was still holding her. Only when she looked up to the long hair, and the sleep-deprived face of the Commander himself, was when she backed away from him. âWhy were you in the womenâs bath?â she snapped, wiping her tears away angrily. Her eyes were roaming his body, and soon she understood by his bright red pajama pants and white shirt that he was asleep. His hair was disheveled, and his eyes were surrounded by dark circles.Â
âI heard screaming, and thought that someone was being...taken advantage of,â he answered, though his hesitance on the last part didnât fully convince Nesta. âI was sleeping in my bed, not beside you, so you can stop looking at me like that.âÂ
âLooking at you like what?â she prodded, her face harsh once more. Cassian, though, didnât match her harsh face with his own, and instead looked to her with sincerity in his eyes.
âI have those dreams, too, you know,â he said after a while. âThat I couldnât protect you, or your sister. That I was too late, and if I couldâve been a bit stronger, I wouldâve been able to save you. That my wings..that my wings were a burden, and that if I didnât have them, if I was just a normal Fae, I couldâve gotten you out. They happen more often than you think. So, donât think youâre alone in them.â He stood up, wiping off dust from his shirt before tucking in his wings and walking out of the communal bathroom. Nesta watched his movements carefully, observing his bare feet and his back muscles rippling through his shirt as he shut the door. Only then did she realize that she wanted him to stay. That she wanted him to hold her, and to talk to her, to give her everything that she knew, deep down, she deserved. That they both deserved
She slammed open the large door of the bathroom, and looked to Cassian. He was halfway to the cabin when she yelled his name. He spun around, looking surprised that she called after him. However, he was even more surprised when she marched up to him and slammed her lips onto his. Not missing a beat, he wrapped his arms around her gently, making sure not to be too constraining.Â
Nestaâs head was spinning once she pulled away, taking in a deep breath of the ice cold air. Cassian was breathless for once as well, and his heart was beating erratically. âWhat was that for?â he asked, though he was definitely not complaining. He has been wishing for that kiss since he met her. One where it took his breath away as well.Â
âBecause I want you, you asshole,â she snapped, though a smile was on her face. And even though it was freezing outside, and Nesta was wearing barely anything, it was Cassianâs smile that warmed her from head to toe.
