After the whistle blows, you go looking for Brian.
The score is 1-0, and the referee has allowed six more minutes after the ninety. Fans are screaming and chanting from both sides. Sitting close to the field, I can see the players scattering around, signaling, yelling, and making quick passes. My eyes are fixated on one player in particular: Brian. He’s been playing the entire game, making passes and attempting several shots to score. The team is under pressure now. They need that point to draw and take the game to penalties. I’m on the edge of my seat, clenching my fists and holding my breath every time Chivas has the ball. The ball makes its way toward the opposing team’s goal. I watch as it flies through the air, my heart jumping with it, only for it to hit the top of the net.
“Fweeeeeet!”
The referee’s whistle cuts through the air.
The timer stops.
For a moment, everything feels frozen. Then the disappointed groans begin.
Disappointed fans begin to exit the stadium, some staying behind to complain about the game to their family and friends. The players begin heading down the underground tunnel, some stopping to sign jerseys and other objects for fans. Brian walks past without stopping. His face looks stoic, but his eyes tell a different story. My chest tightens at the sight of him.
I normally wait for Brian after the chaos is over and meet him in the team’s locker room, but tonight, I decide to make my way through the sea of fans exiting the stadium so I can catch up with him. I finally make my way down the tunnel and toward the locker room. Some of the team members are already leaving, heading out for the night. A few recognize me and give me a quick nod or a small smile as they pass. I wait outside for a few more minutes before the door opens. Armando emerges with his headphones around his neck and his backpack slung over his shoulders. He sees me standing by the door and gives me a quick smile.
“Ey, ¿estás esperando a Brian?” Armando asks, signaling toward the room.
“Sí, quería saber cómo estaba,” I respond.
“Ahí está solo. Traté de hablar con él, pero dijo que estaba bien y no quería molestarlo más,” he says, glancing back at the locker room door.
“Gracias, Armando.”
He gives me another quick nod before leaving me alone in the hallway.
The sound of the fans still echoes throughout the building, but it feels farther away now.
I push open the door.
Brian sits in front of his locker, shirtless, his head lowered as a towel hangs loosely around his neck. His soccer gear is scattered around him, remnants of the game he just played. For a moment, I just stand there. He looks so different from the Brian I watched on the field. The door closing pulls him from his thoughts, and his eyes lift toward me.
“Hey, babe.” His voice is lower than usual.
I make my way toward him and sit beside him. His eyes fall back to the floor. For a few seconds, neither of us says anything.
“You should go home,” he finally says.
I turn toward him. “Why?”
He looks at me, his expression tired.
“You probably want to go home. You don’t have to stay just because you feel bad for me.”
My chest tightens.
“Brian, I’m here because I want to be.”
He looks back down at his hands.
“You must think so poorly of me,” he says, giving a small chuckle that holds no humor. “I couldn’t even score a goal.”
I shake my head.
“No, Brian. I would never look at you differently because you didn’t score.”
I reach for his hand, which rests on top of his knee.
He looks down at our hands before turning his palm upward and intertwining his fingers with mine.
“I just wanted to win tonight,” he admits quietly.
“I know.”
“I wanted to give you something to be proud of.”
My heart sinks.
“Brian, I already am.”
He finally looks at me. His eyes and the tip of his nose have a faint tint of pink, like he’s been fighting back tears.
“I saw you out there,” I tell him. “I saw how hard you were fighting for it.”
He shakes his head slightly.
“It doesn’t feel like enough.”
“It doesn’t have to feel like enough right now.”
He stays quiet.
I squeeze his hand, hoping he can feel that I’m here.
“This season hasn’t been the best for the team,” I continue, “but that doesn’t mean you should blame yourself for everything.”
He looks down at our hands again, his thumb slowly brushing over my knuckles.
“I just hate feeling like I let everyone down.”
“You didn’t let me down.”
His eyes meet mine again.
“Not even a little.”
The corners of his mouth lift slightly, but the smile disappears almost as quickly as it came.
“You don’t have to be okay right now,” I whisper.
He exhales, his shoulders dropping slightly.
I lean toward him, resting my head against his shoulder. For a moment, neither of us speaks. The occasional noise from the stadium travels through the walls. Somewhere outside, fans are still making their way home, their voices slowly fading into the distance.
Brian’s shoulder rises and falls beneath my head.
Then I feel his body tense.
“Please don’t go.”
His voice trembles.
My heart sinks.
“I won't.” I squeeze his hand. I close my eyes, taking in the silence that falls over the room. Slowly, I feel Brian begin to relax. His breathing settles into a steadier rhythm, and the tension in his shoulders starts to disappear. His hand squeezes mine firmly, like he’s afraid to let go.
So I squeeze back.
Outside, the stadium grows quieter. The whistle ended the game, but for now, neither of us moves.
And that’s enough.

A/N: I've been in a hurt/comfort mood lately so here you go! 😋
BF!Brian was shy when you first met, not in a bad way, just needed some time to warm up. Once he did, Oh, completely different person. Suddenly he’s joking, teasing, and making stupid comments under his breath and trying to make you laugh.
BF!Brian is always touching you somehow. He loves to hold your hand, playing with your fingers, resting an arm around you. He just loves being near you and feeling you.
BF!Brian doesn’t bombarded you with questions if you’re having a bad day, he’ll sit beside you and let you decide whether you want to talk about it. If you’re not wanting to talking he’ll just comfort you with cuddles.
BF!Brian has a habit of sneaking behind you and wrapping his arms around you. It’s his favorite way of hugging you.
BF!Brian feels frustrated after a bad game. All he wants to do is go home and order food and watch movies with you.
BF!Brian will purposely not shave for a few days and will sneak up to rub his stubble against your cheek just to annoy you.
BF!Brian likes to send you small texts throughout the day. He’ll send you a random picture followed with “this is literally you.”
BF!Brian and you have developed a silent language of facial expressions. You guys could be sitting across each other and you give him a small expression and he’ll immediately know what you mean.
BF!Brian LOVES to make you laugh, he’ll imitate something you or someone said just to make you laugh.
BF!Brian will be looking for you in the ocean of fans right before a game. Once he spots you, whatever nerves he had before instantly melt away.
BF!Brian absolutely loves seeing you in his jersey. At this point, you’ve accumulated five because every time you wear one, he gets this stupidly proud smile. You once tried wearing someone’s jersey and he just stared at you like you personally betrayed him. “Seriously?” He’d ask pointing at the jersey, “after everything I’ve done for you?”
BF!Brian likes to keep a little Polaroid picture of you in his wallet. You once found it when it slipped out when he was getting something and he got a little embarrassed. “Es para la buena suerte,” he said to you.
BF!Brian likes to send you pictures through the day during training when he’s on break because he knows you’re genuinely interested.
BF!Brian will sometimes send you voice messages when he’s too lazy to type, and half of them are him rambling about something completely random.
BF!Brian could honestly listen to you ramble about whatever and he will always listen and be genuinely interested in what you have to say.
This is not a complete list of all my interests, so if there’s something that you’re interested in and want to see more please drop it in my inbox, I’m always open to new things!
