ALERT THE CONGREGATION
In season one episode two, The Book of Monsters Pt.2, timestamp 6:13, Clay and Lance are talking over each other, and LET THE RECORD SHOW, Clay says, "If you spent half as much time training as you do being pretty, then you might actually (make? turn into?) a good knight!" I'm SOBBING, that's so fucking funny to me. Pretty, Clay?? Honestly, I feel a little surprised at just how much this show leans into Lance being pretty feminine and not just a self-centered handsome man. My dude canonically smells like lavender, and even CLAY says he's pretty, omg.
Clay said this after picking a fight with Lance for no reason, mind you. My man was just trying to relax and get a clear head to better deal with a stressful situation; he wasn't saying anything to Clay, he wasn't harassing him, and then Clay whips his sword at Dennis for no fucking reason :sob: Clay makes comments like, "I don't have time to stroke your ego," when Lance said NOTHING egotistical, and "At least I'm not laying around rubbing people the wrong way!" Like- baby...honey... Lance said NOTHING to you! He non-obtrusively asked Dennis to massage a little to the left, and Clay got pissy about it. If I'm reading into this too much - which I am, I definitely am - it looks like Clay has a crush on Lance and he doesn't know how to handle it, LMFAO, so he lashes out petulantly.
So if I could be annoying for a moment, HEHEHE my ship is canon /j
Also if anyone's curious, Lance says: "Who made you head knight? I didn't vote for you! You know what you're problem is? You're afraid to have a good time. Always so serious-" and on that last line, Clay's saying something like, "Your technique is sloppy-" which personally I find funny cos damn, I took one year of fencing and idk Lance's stances look pretty good to me. Also, Clay, you use a vastly different weapon than Lance does, how can you possibly try to know better than him.
(I can't believe they snuck in that, "I didn't vote for you," Monty Python and the Holy Grail reference TWICE)
!!TW: Brief discussion of potential injury!!
I feel like Axl's axe violates the Geneva Convention- With it having such thick edges, instead of a sharp blade edge, it would leave gaping wound - inflicted with more bludgeoning damage than slashing :sob: Do you have any idea how hard it would be to stitch those? Maybe this is supposed to look more futuristic, but mmmmmmm all I can think of is a triangular knife
S1Ep1 The Book of Monsters Pt.1 4:02-27
Something about the way Lance's VA (Ian Hanlin) delivers the line, "I'll give you all the advice you need, just- swing your sword around, smile, and they'll all love you," is just so warm. Especially his delivery on "love;" it's adorable. I wanna know what happened to this Lance Richmond, because he really sounds like he's trying to reassure Clay that their graduation is going to go smoothly. Like- he sees through Clay wanting to micromanage the team (the scene starts with Clay trying to go over "battle moves to highlight") as Clay's performance anxiety acting up, and he's trying to help.
Granted, he follows that line up with, "Not as much as they love me, but we already knew that," but it doesn't sound- like- callous, y'know? I'm reading into it too much, but man I really like that scene, hehe.
I like to think that Lance does actually try to help his friends when he notices things - the problem is that he either doesn't notice, or his methods of helping don't work. Like here when Lance offers Clay HIS (Lance's) cup of sparkling water, and Clay walks away in a huff. Side note: Maybe Lance hadn't drank out of it yet, but I think it's very funny that the team (or at least Lance and Clay) is close enough to share cups like that.
Where'd it go :sob:
I paused at the perfect time - Macy's eyebrow fell off, lmfao

i complained about this before but it needed to be its own fleshed out post: no one should have to read supplementary books or twitters just to understand the characters, setting, or world building. but especially not kids watching shows aimed at their demographic.
no child should have to beg their parents to buy them a book just to be more familiar with a newly introduced side character who would have been more plot relevant had the series not been cancelled. fletcher bowman should not have had the majority of his story exist in the forbidden power. frankly, the only kids who would have been interested in the book would be kids who are already watching the tv series because it's not the most friendly story for newcomers, and most would rather books about one of the main characters rather than newly introduced characters who appear maybe twice at best in what would be the final season because it was cancelled.
no child should have to download and play the merlok 2.0 app just to be able to access and watch an exclusive two-part episode about the knights' backstories. especially considering the fact that it almost became lost media - i'm grateful that it didn't and is preserved on web archive, but it dangerously came close. and its something that almost happened because they never had plans to air it on tv with the rest of the series at some point. but even then - the fact that the rest of the series is on tubi and knights of the realm isn't?
AND NO CHILD SHOULD HAVE TO BUY SUPPLEMENTARY BOOKS TO KNOW ANYTHING MEANINGFUL ABOUT ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS. OH MY GOD. i love axl so much, he's usually framed primarily as the food-obsessed comedic relief but he's observant and quick witted. he is NOT the dumb muscle character! he's just underutilized in comparison to tommy andreasen's favorites clay or aaron. and though hes extremely emotional and hotheaded he can also be the most down to earth and mature of the knights. and... he's the most artistic, creatively driven of the knights. you could potentially deduce that from his lute playing, but it's really understated in comparison to making him obsessed with food. but what if i told you he loves pottery? that he is skilled at still life sketches? what if i told you he reads the in-universe equivalent of shakespeare? and his favorite play is a parody of titus andronicus? what if i told you he's in a band???
you wouldn't believe me, would you? its all true - but you'd only know that if you are able to get your hands on a copy of one of the books - the knights code, potentially also the character encyclopedia - and read them. but you shouldn't have to. information about one of the main characters should just be in the text of the series. in fact, i think more people would probably appreciate if a lot of the jokes about his gluttony were replaced with more thought-out jokes about his other interests. in fact, a lot more people would be appreciative and amenable to axl's presence as a character if his other attributes were given as much focus.
but then again the writers play favorites, and it shows. you can tell they've all got biases and they for sure do not like or respect some of the main characters (lance and axl) as much as others (clay and aaron) and it shows in how they're treated in the narrative and by other characters. as it stands, we're just lucky that eclair exists to humanize axl and his love of food by transforming it into another facet of his creativity. it doesn't completely solve the issue of making so much of axl's character about food without showcasing his other interests, or with underutilizing him as a knight or as a friend to the other knights. but at least eclair treats axl as a fleshed out person with more to him than gluttony.
SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!! <3<3<3
Holy shit, I couldn't've worded it better myself. Even as an adult, being interested in this series is so frustrating. And that's coming from someone who also loves Clay like the writers clearly do! I love Clay, but man it's so annoying getting next to NOTHING for the other characters.
Supplementary material can be fine and even fun in some instances but it cannot be the ONLY way to learn about a character. I know Fletcher was supposed to have a greater role in season five (and probably season six, given the way season plots are split up), but it's just so frustrating. It sucks when budgets get cut, but surely the writers had some kind of inkling that they wouldn't be able to make a season five when they were making three and four. Surely they would've thought to add more with their limited time. I'm not asking for a brother reveal, but god damn - at least give us something more than ONE SCENE of Fletcher saying he's glad he doesn't have siblings, and that one scene where Ruina says, "There is another."
This show has so much potential behind it, and I don't wanna accuse the writers of not putting thought or care into it, but honestly I don't think they did. Favoritism absolutely wrecked how they treated the literal MAIN CAST and it upsets me so much.
If I could yap about the others real quick (because I have nothing to add to your points about Axl, you truly knocked it out of the park):
Lance is such a tragic character, and they make a joke out of him at every turn. All he wants to do with his life is act, and the writers can't even let him have that. He doesn't want to be a knight, he's never wanted to be a knight, it makes so much sense for him to be bad at it! But it would've been such a good narrative thread for him to realize the weight of the position he was forced into and become a better knight because of it. To suck it up, in a way, y'know? Devastating, to be forced into a role he doesn't want BUT THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF HIS CHARACTER!! How the other characters treat him sucks too. I swear, these people barely feel like friends. You can tell the ninja care about each other, literally at all times - but the knights? I don't buy it. When Lance's parents treat him like shit right in front of them, they still bash LANCE'S CHARACTER for not caring when they get kidnapped. Y'all literally heard Goldie call him a disappointment, are we serious.
And honestly Aaron didn't even get the REAL attention he deserved. He didn't wanna be a knight either! He got sent to the knight's academy because he kept acting out and putting himself in danger. There has to be SOMETHING the show should've done with that, but instead we got next to nothing. I'm not saying he should've protested the whole way through like Lance; Aaron obviously came to accept it, but like- add literally anything to the show itself, don't lock it behind an APP! Though it was super refreshing to see the silly side character take charge after Clay got petrified, but oh my Gods, what do you MEAN they passed up Macy?? She's the only heiress to the throne, what DO YOU MEAN?? I'm p sure Merlok says something like- they couldn't pick her because she might be needed for her princess role but?? Huh?? No, it should've been Macy!
Lords above, how they treat her character is so frustrating. Not to mention- pretty sexist for her to hate being a princess and then ONLY bring up wearing a dress. Like- hello-? What about the political pressure, the dread of having an entire kingdom looking to you for guidance? Macy feels like she'd be a pretty laid-back kinda character to me, a gamer girl if you will (please hear my sarcasm), I think it'd make sense if she didn't like being a princess because of what it meant for her future, and essentially being locked to a throne she wants nothing to do with (a similar thread to Lance and Aaron being forced into knighthood), BUT THEY MADE IT ALL ABOUT THE DRESSES?? Have the writers not checked what year it is? Macy doesn't HAVE to wear a dress, and it's actually really weird of Eggred to insist his adult daughter wear what HE wants her to - ESPECIALLY when she's established the boundary time and time again that wearing dresses makes her feel bad about herself.
Putting actual character development behind a paywall is honestly really gross, especially when your audience is full of children and ESPECIALLY when the paywall's contents aren't even that good. I have The Book of Monstrox, The Book of Monstrox, The Knight's Code, and No Rest for the Heroes and while I wasn't expecting them to be like- Book 3 and The Book of Bill from Gravity Falls, it was rather insane to me how much they just threw into books with little thought. There's whole other types of monsters thrown into The Book of Monsters (one of them was in NRftH), and they're no where to be found in the show. All in all, the supplementary material isn't what I would call GOOD supplementary material. The Book of Bill is about what happened to Bill after the events of Gravity Falls, all the material for Nexo Knights feels like it's trying to poorly fill-in the blanks. Not even blanks, tbh - there was no reason for them to make Forest Monsters, or Sea Monsters other than for OTHER supplementary material.
All-in-all, the series can be fun to think about, but it's super frustrating trying to engage in the material.
why are some of you still shipping monstrox and jestro in the big year of ‘25 . did we watch the same show
I found this character base by mellon_soup on Pinterest and thought it'd be perfect for the eyeliner thing I drew a couple weeks ago! They're chillin' in their boxers and doing make-overs after a monster-free day-off <3<3
Kwato (I dunno if you're gonna see this, but you're awesome!!) in the comments of one of my AO3 works got me thinking about Clay with white trauma hairs and I had to add them. I was held at gun point by myself.
Nexo knights community, I need to know-
Who is your favorite character
Clay
Lance
Aaron
Macy
Axl
Jestro
Made this today instead of doing literally anything productive-- I feel like Clay doesn't know anything about makeup stuff so he just kinda trusts Lance to go at it and today it was rad, rock-star lookin' eyeliner. (I dunno what Clay's sighing at, but I'd like to imagine someone (Aaron) said something cringe) Coloring is hard! But this was fun <3<3 (Don't ask where Clay's shirt is, I keep forgetting to draw clothes when I'm sketching headshots)

UUUUHHH-!! Did anyone else who watches Nexo Knights on Tubi.TV notice that they refer to Axl as "Alex" in (at least) the first episode synopsis? Am I going nuts, or was Axl's named supposed to be Alex-? I swear I've heard something else somewhere that Tubi.TV has un-updated episode synopses so I wouldn't be surprised, but maybe it was just a typo, lmao
In the midst of my writer's block, have an outfit re-design! I've never mentioned this before, but my version of Clay is a trans man and, lemme tell you, button up shirts can be scary for us swag-ass AFABs without something underneath. I'm not sure if he's had top surgery or if he's just using a glamor spell, but I feel like Clay would still wanna make sure he's covered up. (He owned the Hawaiian shirt prior to the episode, but he brought it to cover his shoulders) I think episode 2x6 Knights Out would be more fun if all the Nexo Knights were there trying their damnedest to make sure Clay actually relaxes. Also, there's no way Clay owned a swimsuit prior to that episode; in my re-write on AO3, Lance is gonna drag the others to go shopping so they had swanky new fits for the expensive-ass resort he's bringing them to. (The new jewelry is plot related) (don't ask where his other hand went, it's in the void, idunno how to find it-- Also he is ripped, trust me, I just dunno how to draw those yet)
Show Outline
Howdy, bud! I'm trying to put together a vague outline of the series for me to work off of for my re-write, is there anything important I missed? Or just something like a plot-line or note from an episode that doesn't make sense?
Season One
Graduation Battle-Bration (Merlok fake out death, rip)
Jestro ("Jes") joins Monstrox ("Mon")
Uses Nexo Powers for the first time even tho Aaron calls his hovershield a "Nexo" shield before the powers were introduced-?
Established lava monsters
Mon and Jes collect some of the "Books of Evil"
Season One Finale
Knights get separated, Aaron escaped and gets them out
Mon tries to take over Knighton, but doesn't get past the front gates
Season Two
Mon and Jes find the other Books of Evil
Somehow not immediately snapping into awareness when they get woken up by a rogue "Rooster of Wakening" means the knights are "lazy" – Local teacher threatens to un-knight the Kingdom's only protectors, even more local knights forget only a King can do that
Ep.2.4 Tighty Knighties first appearance (thank you, pink-gladioli)
Season Two Finale
Mon tries to possess Clay, it doesn't work
Jes gets redeemed – Local Jester finds out he's good at stand-up even though it's been previously established that his stand-up routine is, and I quote Aaron, "brutal"
Merlok dies again, f in the chat
Season Three
The knights all got different jobs cos now there's no more evil even though there wasn't any evil before when they initially became knights
Jes gets corrupted again, yikes (Mon's a cloud now, hate it when that happens)
Established stone monsters
Collecting the Forbidden Powers
Enter Ruina Stoneheart in maybe Heart of Stone, idk, she does that "OoOoOo, I'm a spooky lady" thing with Clay
Queen "Heart of the Kingdom" Halbert gets queen-napped; Clay gets petrified, whoops
Season Three Finale
The "Cloud of Monstrox"
Aaron almost dies, I don't remember what was up with Clay (might've still been stone but like- "Fallen Hero" stone)
Season Four
Mon and Jes collect more powers
Clay's stone-hormones making him a lil cray cray, Ruina cont. her "OoOo"ing
Clay almost kills Jes, whoops
Season Four Finale
The "Stone Colossus"
Clay frees himself cos–even though he swore he would help–Merlok did literally nothing
Fucks up his arm in the process, learns to control technology with 0 training
Robin turns a library into a rocket and develops a high-key crack (energy drink) addiction
