A B A N T G A R B Reception night: 2 June 2018, 6PM gallery i, Iloilo City 2-26 June 2018 Cycy Berlin, Gabriel Tiongson, Nescel Giabia, Diko and Nollzz The ugly. The grotesque. The uncanny. These are slippery elements when it comes to art as perceived by the masses. Nevertheless, they captivate, provoke, and nurture new perspectives in cultures that aren’t used to them. Contemporary art is thriving all over the world. It continues to challenge and push the boundaries of art itself. Iloilo is in dire need of this dose. Our community needs so see much more than what has become the ordinary, the mundane, the average. The practices of Cyron Berlin, Nescel Giabia, Noli Umahag , and Gabriel Tiongson are very different yet the same. They bare essences of surrealism, pop culture, contemporary etc. Their aesthetics may vary, but they share the common goal of bringing a new lens to Ilonggo Art --- and they challenge the Ilonggo’s idea of art, more so in the gallery setting.
Anguish Series 2009 These are acrylic on watercolor paper. Each of ‘em has its title but I totally forgot, completely unfortunate. Going forward, these 9” x 12” series is my exploration of sadness by various people and again, mirroring my own. This was exhibited in Casa Real Gallery in January 2017 and was sold to a collector in Iloilo City, Philippines. I didn’t had a chance to take a photo of them individually because I was cramming that time to submit my artworks for a groupshow and right after it was sold out.
BIO NOTE: Nescel Giabia
Nescel Giabia (b.1987) is a self-taught visual artist born and raised in Iloilo City, a southern part of the Philippines.
He creates abstract faces with the use of bold colors, lines and shapes that mostly depicts his exploration of people’s persona, their desires and issues and most importantly their struggles. His expressive works are mostly composed of vandalism and brush strokes full of angst in context of his own well-being, anxiety disorder, political views and interpersonal relationship to the society. The portraitures he creates which are mostly grotesque, even if viewed together or as a set, the variation makes each one seem interesting enough to be viewed on its own.
