ic! berlin Showcases Black Diamond-Studded, 3D-printed Sunglasses 

I was recently invited to ic! berlin’s double event, which is both a launch of their latest eyewear line-ups (the ‘hybrid’ and ‘plotic’ series) as well as the showcase of the mega rare 3d-printed ‘Roja’ sunglasses (photos above) that are set with eight black diamonds. The event was in tandem with International Women’s Day, hence, there was also an influx of local celebrities trying to steal the spotlight from this luxe pair of shades, which inevitably, they failed.

I’m privy to weird stuff, but they aren’t always impractical. Michael Beitz is a designer of squiggly furnitures and stuff, which have a rather unique appeal to people in need of contortions, just like myself. I am not a contortionist but I am sure certain things needs to be contorted. Contort, such as a contorted word. 

And the Hundred Dollar Sandwich Is Not An Actual Sandwich But A Cleverly Packaged Album.

I would like to think that sandwiches are made for champions. They are tucked neatly inside your school bag so you can remember to eat them for the extra brain juice. But I always forgot in favour of junk food, which explains my haphazard writing.

Packaged in a resealable freezer bag, ‘And the Hundred Dollar Sandwich’ is the new album of Brooklyn-based hip hop duo Junk Science. It comes with two slices of ‘CD breads’ and ‘fillings’ printed with lyrics.

Mechanical Sorcery: Blooming Ceiling Lamps By Studio Drift

I hoped to own a piece of functional art so that I can show it off to my friends. But that has never been fulfilled. However, I can share with the world that I’ve finally found the right ceiling lamp to match my perennial wish of ascension. By that I meant, ascending the third dimension. It’s possible.

The ‘Shylight’ is a lamp that emulates the blossoming of a flower. As it descends, it blooms, and subsequently closes while retreating upwards. Constructed by layers of silk, carefully planned metal framework and some tech, the movement can be controlled using iOS devices such as the iPhone or iPad.

Living Glass: Artist Creates Vibrant Life-forms Out Of Glass

Never been a fan of reptiles and squiggly, slimy critters of my backyard but artist Scott Bisson of Quantum Creative Glass had beautifully created a line of glass sculptures with his glass blowing skills that are cultivated since 2004. 

Scott has now been blowing glass for nineteen years and is currently represented in close to 80 galleries spanning the United States. He specializes in borosilicate flame-work and translates his love of nature into whimsical representations of the world he sees.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day With 170 Year Old Beer. 

By the time this post is made, I would’ve probably missed St. Patrick’s Day and all the hype about shamrocks, green hats and drunk driving. But with my latest addiction to upscale trends still intact, I would still like present you the ‘Stallhagen Historic beer 1843′ aka ‘the Shipwreck Beer’. 

As a matter of fact, it’s not the actual beer from 170 years ago (that would most probably cost you millions), but an identical recreation that is based on the beers salvaged from a shipwreck in the Åland archipelago dating back to the 1800s - discovered in summer 2010. The Government of theautonomous Åland Islands is the owner of the findings and had the beers analyzed at VTT Technical Research Center in Finland. 

”The VTT results gave knowledge of alcohol content, colour, and bitterness of the beer. The living cells still present in the bottle helped us to determine the type of yeasts and bacteriaused to produce this beer. For this beer, we combined history and tradition with innovativebrewing knowledge. The symbiosis between the organisms and the malt flavours results in thevery special overall flavour of this beer”, says Professor Gert De Rouck at KU Leuven University.

One bottle of the Stallhagen 1843 sells at €6 for a 37.5cl bottle in Finland.

Furniture Wizardry: Artistic And Functional Tables By Duffy London

I find  the concepts of form and function fascinating and how magic seemingly happens when they converge into everyday objects and facilities. Also, I would love to have one of these displayed in my living room where people can just admire and not touch, which is rather selfish but not quite considering the price tag can be a downpayment for my new loft.

The Future Of Haute Couture? Here Comes The DNA Shoe Concept.

Alright, not haute couture per se but Pensar Development recently announced the ‘DNA Shoe Concept’, which champions the idea that footwear will be crafted with our individual anatomy and biomechanics as the foundation. 

Leveraging on 3D printing’s basis of ‘rapid’ manufacturing, shoes that not only match our foot contours but also the way we move can be created. The concept posits that a customer’s feet are three dimensionally scanned first, then given a pair of special sensor shoes to go for a test run or walk. As the sensors track movement such as footfall, pronation, balance and etc., the data will be combined with the scan and activity type to print the shoes - where colours, materials and textures can be further customised.

Pensar Development understands that before this concept can become a reality, it will require further advancements to occur in our 3D printing technologies. Some of the reasons are based to the fact that materials currently don’t offer the exact durability or softness necessary for everyday wear or athletic use. Furthermore the cost and amount of time utilised to print a pair of shoes are both too costly. 

However, the company is confident with their futurist concept “the 3D printing industry is evolving quickly, and while material challenges may prohibit immediate implementation, user-driven rapid manufacturing will be realized in the near future.”

Will ‘KimCos’ Become A Trend?

The above photographs of up-and-coming Japanese pop sensation ‘YanaKiku’ feature a distinctive fashion style called ‘KimCos’, short for Kimono and Cosplay. YanaKiku was recently spotted at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur officiating the Hinamatsuri Festival (Japanese Doll Festival). 

And Again: Minimalist Video Game Posters 

A Deviantart artist recently came up with these minimalist posters featuring the main characters of their respective video games. The posters include subtleties such as the character’s HP stats, symbolism and don’t you feel like pasting them all over your office?
