The World XXI

With @clodicious 's Ophelia Ingellvar, done for 2025's @unofficialdragonageday . I am extremely late but at least I can say I put my all into it.

This year I participated in @thedragonagebigbang , partnering up with @loredrinker to illustrate their fic. It can be found right here on AO3!

Though I didn't get to read the whole fic before making the art itself we discussed the concept deeply enough that I was able to make this mural heavy with symbolism. For those who are interested I'm breaking my usual rule of letting the audience interpert it, and explaining my own thought process behind the various elements in the work.

The protagonist Lavellan is stuck between two entities, the Dreadwolf and the Din'anshiral, which is a spirit entity in this fic. She's tied up by all the strings of duty, sorrow, and fate, fade green poison just like her scar.

The mural starts at the Dreadwolf crying out after Lavellan, who is journeying towards the Din'anshiral in order to join him.

I had to insert the two moons of Thedas on Solas's side, one of them being red as a nod to Elgar'nan's threat looming in the future, and the Breach above the Frostbacks as the background.

The Din'anshiral is in the nebulous Fade/Void, and the blood drops around it symbolize the steep cost it demands those who walk it. The star above its head is a nod to the way what it does could be compared to a willing self tranquilisation for those who walk its path. It mirrors the breach star near Solas because they both give their respective scars to Lavellan. The mark and the Din'anshiral's cost.

Lavellan being inside a circular frame nods at the circular nature of Solas, Lavellan, and their relationship, where they doom each other in a circle and seem trapped in an eternal wheel of karma.

Aemond watched him in silence, a familiar tightness to his lips.

“I just want to have one day when I can simply go and be in peace without everyone losing their minds over it,” Lucerys grumbled, trying not to sound so childish. “Let’s go then. If we’re lucky my family won’t have begun to hunt you down as well. Yet,” he added gloomily.

Lucerys tried to walk past Aemond to Arrax, but he was stopped by the blonde grabbing his bicep. His grip was steady as ever, his hand almost covering the entire circumference of Lucerys’s arm.

“What?” Lucerys asked with a growing irritation, standing still until Aemond forced them to face each other.

He held Lucerys by his chin and leaned down to press a gentle kiss to his lips, closing his eye and staying near to breathe him in for a moment.

This illustration is accompanied by this amazing tear jerker on AO3. Based on the idea that maybe Dorian did have feelings for Felix, once upon a time. Go give this fic and the author some love, he deserves it for elevating my vague vibey headcanons about Dorian's youth. (But heed the warnings and age restriction plz)
