Yugi: We’ve actually known for ages.

Kaiba: Pardon? We started dating two days ago.

I got this ask from @naehja.  It took me a while to reply.  I ended up writing a ficlet where Atem has his own body and is trying to figure out just whose name was written on his arm all those centuries ago.

What’s in a Name?

The marks had shown up on Atem’s arm on his 16th birthday, just like they had for everyone else. But in place of the usual hieroglyphs, a strange series of random lines and dots had appeared instead.  Atem hadn’t known what they meant.  He’d died soon after and his body had turned to dust.  

Atem looked down at his arm, seeing only skin.  He’d been granted a second body, a second life.  It would be too much to ask for his soulmate mark back as well, now that he could recognize the language, now that he would have been able to read it.

He shifted his gaze to the man walking by his side as they paced the streets of Domino, heading for the pier.  He’d grown to know Kaiba through their duels until they’d started meeting without needing a match to draw them together.

“Do you ever wonder what new game we’re playing?” Atem asked as they reached their destination.

“A waiting game?” Kaiba answered, shifting his gaze from the water to Atem’s face.

“What sign are we waiting for?” Atem asked.

Kaiba snorted.  “I don’t believe in signs.”

“You must have a soulmate mark like everyone else,” Atem argued, suddenly eager to see it, suddenly realizing there was another way to know.

Kaiba grinned.  He stretched out his arm and rolled back the sleeve.  A neat black box had been tattooed right where his soulmate’s name would have appeared.

“I had it done on the morning of my 16th birthday.  I never looked.  I have no idea what was written there.”

“Why?” Atem asked.

“Because the only destiny I recognize is the one that I create.  And my soulmate could only be someone who matches me.”
