Mighty Magic

I’ve been staying off tumblr, and taking a MTG break… because this set is a travesty. Every defender of this stupid set says “Wait for the planeswalker guide. It’ll explain the lore better. It’s not just cowboy dress up.”

Well guess I called that days ago.

As predicted here is our Red assassin… yeah. Why do I care? Blue has been waiting for assassin support forever! Even the assassin lord is UB, still there has been only ONE blue assassin printed to date…

What a terrible card at that.

Of all the sets released in the past couple years MKM and OTJ woulda been the perfect home for assassin support. Wizards agreed! We got the outlaws batch! But assassins being pushed out of blue in favor of supporting the Mardu outlaw commander. Wow thanks Wiz!

With all the talk about Holy Cow around the web I figured I’d chip in my opinion, not that it matters much. I enjoy me some puns! I loved every Un-Set and wished for another! I’m not a total hater of silliness and lighthearted sets. In a vacuum.. this card is hilarious! But that’s in a vacuum. At what point does the ham fisted puns lose the charm? How many blatant wink wink puns do we need per set?

For me it wears thin fast… we have Holy Cow, Bovine Intervention, Loan Shark, Claim Jumper, Steer Clear, and the list goes on… Cheesy western trope card names, High Noon, This Town Ain’t Big Enough, Thrown from the Saddle, ext. Nearly every other card is an alliteration or rhyme. To me this screams Un-Set! How serious can we take this? It’s ok for MTG to be silly sometimes… sure. Problem is this set is taking itself seriously. It’s a set based on villains. It’s a set setting up the next big arc… while everyone cosplays. Were cowboys yeehaa! Sorry I can’t take this slop seriously…

Sorry I was off a couple days… Health and I decided to reserve judgement until full spoilers dropped. Well looks bout exactly how I thought… maybe worse. Truthfully don’t even know where to start. So I’ll start with positivity!

So here’s some absolutely amazing by one of my favorite artists Livia Prima! Her work has become some of favorites as of late! Even her sketch work is just marvelous. With all the advent of AI and some artists plagiarizing it’s refreshing to have an artist so talented dedicate so much heart to MTG. Thank you Livia Prima!

Finally more assassins!! Wait.. is that color combo WB? Yep it is.. And Olivia cares about outlaws in Mardu. So I’m guessing there is no blue assassins?? Really?? I will scream!! Blue has been waiting for assassins forever… 25 years of waiting for assassin support. Ramses, Assassin Lord is UB. Capenna and Ravnica assassins are UB. Etrata… my poor Etrata. Will you finally see more assassins printed only to be able to run NONE of them?

Normally I’d be so happy for batching! Not this time. If the batch is going to force assassins into WBR that’s just sad.. They obviously want the batch in those colors so… I will bet we get a red assassin but not a blue…

Truth be told I’ve avoided tumblr and MTG in general the last couple weeks… Over these posts I’ll explain why. I loathe this set!! Every aspect of it.. That I’ve seen so far at least. Here we have Olivia. Easily one of my favorite characters ever created, not just in MTG I mean ever created. While I would normally be beyond happy to receive a new Olivia… I hate this so much! Finally a new Mardu Vamp Commander!.. nope no vamp synergy. Does she steal card like previous Olivia? Nope, she’s an assassin now that cares about outlaws joining her crew so she can get treasure… whaaa.. But she’s got her cowboy hat!! Thanks that makes it better, no it doesn’t. Another victim to the world of hats and a mediocre card, almost want to cry…

Most importantly her flavor is now ruined.. Forever!! In a failure to actually create new characters and new proper worlds WotC has resorted to placing fan favs in costumes and hoping we will all be happy. I’m not. It’s cheap and lazy and destroying the previous 30 years that was invested in story and REAL world building. Many say, “WotC has always built world of hats. Look At Innistrad. It’s just world of horror.” While I agree they built worlds on tropes in the past there was one big difference… They built enough resonance in these worlds to make them feel special. They made characters like Olivia, Gisa, and Geralf. People loved these characters! So much so that OTJ had to have all 3…

What’s everyone’s fav art from MKM so far? We definitely got some beautiful pieces this set but mine happens to be from the Clue Edition.

My daughter was absolutely devastated we missed this. Rebecca is her fav artist.. well ever. So sad WotC put this in a limited product, or was that the plan. Seems like a pretty strong selling point to me.

“Oh you wanna get the first new Rebecca art in years. Buy this premium product then!”

Thanks WotC!! My daughter uses the art as her phone background now because we will never own the real card. I know I know we could order it off the secondary market for nearly.. $20!! Nice. So if we wanna own this we have to pay premium to whales who bought up all the product to make $$. Greed wins again!

Morning Magic community!

Starting the day with some of my favorite art from BRO! It was awesome to see the return of meld on Mishra, Urza, and Titania. All 3 have amazing art. Also, I really enjoy all the schematic cards. I feel there design lends well to feeling like something from the past. What was your fav art from BRO? Gonna do retro artifacts later today..
