If Not Now, Then When?
If not now, then when? For tomorrow has never been promised.
When I was away, on the other side of freedom (my euphemism for federal prison), I missed the little things – walking to the deli, buying a newspaper, leaving a message for mom. The grandiose materialism, the conspicuous consumption rarely (if ever) occupied my longings. Time taught me the value of appreciating the microwonders of the moment. Any moment.
Adversity is a teacher. While frustration is a natural reaction to an obstacle, it should never paralyze us to inactivity. Obstacles, by their very nature, are designed to be overcome. Progress – usurping our encumbrances – is what enables us to evolve beyond states of indifference, ignorance, and stagnation.
The call for action (personal, collective, social, or otherwise) is not a luxurious endeavor, one to be delayed or taken for granted. When the spirit hits you – move! More often than not, the solution is in front of you, staring you down, daring you to be graceful enough, or rather brave enough to see it. Make the necessary adjustments and commit your best efforts.
If not now, then when?
i'll miss you, friend.
