Donnie did so much for the team and for the family. He was a mechanic and a medic and a fixer. More importantly, he was the guy you call when you need to hack into someone else's system or disarm a bomb or figure out someone else's location or figure out what poison your enemy has poisoned you with (the list could go on and on)

He was just quietly fulfilling his role, but unlike Leo or Raph, that role consisted of like, a billion things at once.

He was literally the most important part of the foundation upon which his family's well-being rested.

And then when he disappeared in that episode, ..well....

There was no one to properly heal them when they were seriously injured. No one could help them when a "hide our location from the net" type task was required.

All those combat schemes where Donny would just do his clever magic and the rest of them would just cover for him didn't work anymore.
