‘Hello Vi’ ‘It is I, Neeko’ ‘Sorry for disappearing’ ‘Coming into town pretty soon’ ‘Reconnect?’ Huh. This wouldn’t be so unusual if Vi hadn’t changed numbers three times since Neeko up and vanished a year or so ago. Or if that hadn’t happened.
One of Vi’s old, cracked phones vibrated from inside the drawer, and she looked over at it with a confused expression, distracting herself from what she was doing. She swore and shook her hand when the ash from her cigarette fell onto it, grinding it out on the corner of her workbench.
“Didn’t that thing die months ago?” Setting her goggles and welder down, Vi walked across the room and over to the dresser, pulling it open and picking up the phone with the shattered screen from being punched. It had somehow turned itself back on, and there was a single message on the screen; ‘Reconnect?’ Who the fuck…
It had been two weeks since Neeko sent her those texts and she was worried Vi either hadn’t gotten them or had ignored her! So, the only obvious thing to do was to figure out where she lived and visit. A quick SIM card swap here, some eves dropping there, and the lizard was at her doorstep in no time!
“Knock knock knock! It is me!” Well, she might’ve picked up a trick or two, but obviously hadn’t changed all too much.
Vi was usually wary about opening the door to visitors she didn’t expect, but this time, she felt something different. Coffee in one hand, she opened the door and got ready to tell a salesman to fuck off.
“N-Neeko?” The mug in her hand fell and shattered on the floor.
Neeko... wasn’t expecting that response. Honestly, she probably should have to some extant. She couldn’t let that get her down though. Enthusiasm appropriately curbed, she continued.
“Yes yes! Neeko is here to visit. May... may Neeko come in? Maybe help you with...” She motioned to the shards between them.
“There is much catching up to do.”
