According to Sting of the Wild, the writer spent his whole career getting stung by insects of the North American southwest including the tarantula hawks and velvet ants, and went on to feel the pain of the infamous bullet ant of central/south America.

Apparently the most painful sting in Australia belongs to the bull ant, and it was a pretty anticlimactic experience, about as or slightly less painful than a honeybee's sting.

This is the same poetic Schmidt behind the Schmidt sting scale, which was going around a minute ago for its colorful description of stinging sensations, ranging from "almost pleasant, a lover just bit your earlobe a little too hard" (grade 1, a sweat bee), to "Torture.
