Ellie sniffled softly as she put Blossom into a little box tied up with a pink bow. She gathered it up gently before heading out of her apartment, accidentally bumping into Ned and Digby on the way. âSâŠsorry,â she said softly as she wiped under her eyes. ~ Ellie // @ellie-gray-anon
The Pie Maker inspected the girl a moment, quickly putting together what happened and frowning â N-no Iâm sorryâ he murmured and looked as his trusty pet Digby. He waited a moment, trailing behind his tiny neighbor. â When she leaves go get herâ he said to Digby, hiding a bit before untying the box once she was out of sight and touching the small rabbit. Right on cue, Digby ran over to Ellie, barking at her
Ellie sniffled and looked down, giving Digby a pet. âWhat is it, buddy?â she asked while she followed him over to the box, shocked to see that Blossom was alive. Her pink little nose twitched as shock grew across Ellieâs face. âWâŠ.what?â
â I found herâŠ. Um⊠yesâ mumbled The Pie Maker, unable to make up a good excuse in time â Your bunnyâ
âI thought she wasâŠ.oh noâŠI was gonna bury her alive,â Ellie sniffled as she gathered Blossom into her arms and hugged her close. âIâm horrible, maybe she was just sleeping.â
â N-no youâre not horrible whatsoever, itâs a weirdâŠ. Rabbit thing that occurs with her breedâŠ. I had a friend who had the same thing happen to himâ Admitted The Pie Maker whose hands were practically glued to his pockets
âRâŠreally?â She asked softly as she stroked Blossomâs soft fur. âIâm glad your doggie came to let me know,â she smiled. âSheâs my best friend, sheâs kinda my only friend.â
â Iâm quite similar with Digby hereâ Admitted The Pie Maker, rocking on his heels â I have more so, acquaintances than anything else⊠coworkers as wellâ
Ellie nodded her head as she slowly stood up. âYeah, same here. Well I suppose I should get her back home. Thank you bothâŠfor letting me know,â she smiled.
â Yes of course⊠be well Ellie, and remember the fact that you are indeed a wonderful person to be around and you are quite the opposite of terribleâ Blurted out the Pie Maker
âThank you, Ned, youâre so sweet,â Ellie smiled as she headed back to her apartment to put Blossom back in her cage, getting her settled before she headed back down to the Pie Hole.
The Pie Maker let out a long deep breath, glad he wasnât discover by the shy young girl. As he got back to making his pies, he spotted her and tried to act cool and inconspicuous
She smiled and gave him a little wave, placing her order with Olive and having a friendly little chat with her.
The Pie Maker gave her a small smile and nodded, serving her pie and sending it to Olive and going over to sit with her â Helloâ
Ellie swallowed down her bite of peach a la mode and wiped at her mouth. âHi Ned!â
â How is your once dead but not dead bunny rabbit doingâ Asked the pie maker with wide eyes â and more importantly how are you feelingâ
âSheâs doing well, sheâs upstairs in her cage now with a fresh carrot and some straw. UmmmâŠ.I feel a little off but ok,â Ellie told him.
â Perhaps it would help to explain what a little off means in this context?â Suggested the pie maker, trying to find out if she had any suspicions
Ellieâs cheeks turned a little pink. âOh just my mood, thatâs all,â she said, not wanting to get into too many details.
â You donât have to divulge the full details, though my work with detectives tends to lend me to understanding people moreâ Blurted out the Pie Maker â though as long as youâre feeling betterâ
âWow! I didnât know you work with detectives, thatâs really cool! And I am, I decided to take a personal day from work,â she replied.
â and your pie is on the house, Iâll have you know. See it as a pie on top of a pie as the shop is a giant pie. I wouldnât want to have been the cause of any distress so this is rather important for me
âThank you, thatâs really sweet,â she smiled. âYouâre so nice, and I canât believe I havenât come here before, itâs so yummy.â
â Iâm rather glad you think so, good reviews are good for business. Good Pies are good for the stomach. I just attempt to be good in these wayâ Ned shrugged
âYouâre right they areâŠbut these are better than good. I think this might be the best pie I ever tasted,â she grinned.
â Iâll take that review to heartâ grinned the pie maker â I always take the reviews seriously whether they are from customers or friendsâ
âIâm glad cause I meant every word,â she grinned. âI donât have a lot of friends, but Iâll tell the ones I do have about this place.â
â an amount of friends doesnât matter per say but I will say that having places for yourself that you enjoy is good. I suppose I meant that as you are both a friend and a customer at timesâ
She gave him a smile. âYouâre right about thatâŠ.on both accounts. Quality over quantity and yeah, Iâm a customer and a friend now,â she replied. âI swearâŠ.you put magic in these pies.â
â I suppose if that is one way you wanted to put it you could⊠though I do use the obvious flour and sugar and fruit as wellâ
âOf course, but there is something very special about these pies,â Ellie smiled. âI choose to believe it has some magic in it.â
â As I said, I do not think I would render you entirely incorrect with that assumption, though I would say it is certainly not the magic of close up variety. I would say I abhor that magicâ mumbled the pie maker â that was rather a lot my apologiesâ
âNo itâs ok and duly noted. I was referring to that magic you canât quite explain, not the rabbit out of the hat kind. But that spark in your fingertips, fluttering in your heart, and colorful swirls in your head kind magic,â she smiled.
â I happen to prefer that magic., though one of those examples tends to tickle my heart in a certain way, I wonât divulge into which, so do with that information what you willâ murmured the pie maker.
Ellie leaned her chin on her hand. âI bet I could figure it out. You seem likeâŠa romantic,â she grinned.
â Iâm certain definition of the world I reckon I could most certainly be described as suchâ grinned the pie maker
âYou also have a way with words, they sound very pretty and smart,â she grinned
â i simple speak as I wish to, I enjoy being able to express myself in however many words it may takeâ the pie maker laughed and smiled
Ellie giggled softly. âI like that. Youâre really nice, Ned,â she smiled.
â I try to be, when I Can that isâ grinned the pie maker â want some coffee?â
âI would love some coffee, thank you! Iâm a big coffee fan,â she smiled.
â of course, on the house againâ grinned the pie maker as he poured her a mug
âThank you,â she smiled, scrunching her nose as she added a little bit of cream.
â youâre welcome Ellie, enjoy and let me know if you want moreâ said the pie maker softly.
âI will, thank you,â she smiled as she enjoyed her coffee and pie.
â good, Iâll see you thenâ grinned the pie maker as he head to the back of his shop with more pies and her pet bunny on the mind
Ellie finished up and left a nice tip for Olive before she headed about her day, doing her little shift at the local bookstore before heading home.
Ned came into the book store later, checking out some of the vintage recipe books
Ellie hummed softly as she restocked some of the little bins in the front with various Knick knacks and smiled when she saw Ned. âHi Ned!â She said softly as she approached him.
â Good evening Ellie, how are things going here?â
âKinda quiet, but thatâs ok, can I help you find anything?â
â perhaps, I was researching recipes from the fifties of you had any books from that era or inspired byâ
âOooo very cool! Yeah, hold on,â she said and pulled a couple titles out of the cooking section for him to look at.
â Thank you, Iâm looking to do more variations of Pies, I figured that it would be a good place to seeâ
âThat sounds like a lot of fun, I canât wait to see what you come up with!â
â Iâll be sure to call you first to see what you think of my new recipesâ grinned the pie maker
âReally? Iâd love thatâŠoh I love the pies back then that had the fancy crustsâŠ.always so pretty,â she smiled as she did a little twirl.
â I am not always the best of artists but I know I will make my best attemptâ grinned Ned.
âMy mom used to make them that way, I wish I had learned more from her,â she said.
â that sounds wonderful⊠my mother also taught me in my love for pie making. I suppose this place is a tribute to her in a wayâ explained the pie maker
âThatâs really sweet,â Ellie said with soft eyes. âIs sheâŠ.still alive? My mom died when I was ten.â
â Unfortunately she is notâŠ. She⊠when I was eight. This shop is my homage to herâ explained the pie maker with a solemn look on his face
âIâm sorry, Ned,â she said gently, giving his arm a soft squeeze.
The Pie Maker looked over at the girlâs hand and gently smiled. â Thank you Ellie, I appreciate itâ
âYouâre welcome, Ned, it sucksâŠbeing in the Dead Mom club,â she sighed.
The Pie Maker gave the girl a small smile and Pat her shoulder â At least itâs not a lonely clubâ
âTrue, Iâll be at the register if you need anything else!â She smiled as she headed back to check out a few guests.
â Thank youâ whispered the pie maker, choosing a few of the books and bringing them up
Ellie gave him a smile as she rang them up and put them into a cute paper bag for him. âHere you are!â
â Thank you Ellie, say hello to your bunny for meâ grinned the Pie Maker as he paid
âI will, Ned, have a good night. Iâll see you around!â She chirped happily after him
â Iâll see you aroundâ grinned the pie maker who took his bag and went back to his apartment
She gave him a wave then headed home once her shift was over. The next afternoon, she headed into the pie hole for a slice before work.
Digby was sat at the door way, his tail wagging as he saw you. The pie maker turned around and grinned as he saw the girl â good afternoon Ellieâ
âHiya Ned, hiya Digby,â she grinned and gave Digby a few pets. âI thought Iâd treat myself to a slice of peach before my shift!â
âFunny enough I just finished a Peach Pie ready for eatingâ grinned the pie maker as he strategically cut into the pie
âI got super lucky then, maybe I have it a la mode please? Ice cream makes everything better,â she smiled.
â I have some vanilla freshly churnedâ grinned the pie maker as he served the girl a large slice with ice cream
âWhoaâŠ.thatâs awesome, thank you,â she beamed.
â only the best at the pie holeâ grinned ned who gave her a small wink
âYouâre very right about that, have you tried out any new recipes yet?â She asked curiously
â i have only tried out one thus far, wasnât the biggest fan of it though so back to the drawing board for meâ explained the pie maker with a shrug
âWell thatâs ok, sometimes it takes a few tries to get what you want,â she smiled.
â Iâll let you know when I get it down pactâ grinned the pie maker â youâll be the first taste testerâ
âI canât wait,â she grinned as she ate up her pie and ice cream.
â please enjoy, you deserve itâ grinned the pie maker
âYouâre so nice, Ned,â she smiled as she finished up and patted her tummy.
The pie maker took the girlâs plate and gently pat her head as he went back to the kitchen
Ellie scrunched her nose, smiled then left some money on the counter before skipping across the street to the bookstore to start her shift.
The Pie Maker chuckled as he saw her, looking over at Digby who barked happily. â what a kind girlâ
Ellie headed back to the apartments after her shift, humming to herself as she headed up the stairs to her place, tripping on the last step and landing onto the floor with a hard thud. âOw,â she mumbled.
The Pie Maker opened the door of his apartment after hearing the thud, growing when he saw the girl â Ellie? Are you hurt?â
âJust my ego,â she admitted sheepishly as she slowly stood up. âI missed the top step,â she explained.
The pie maker went and helped her stand up â do you suppose you need some ice?â
She let him help her up and smiled, shaking her head. âNoâŠ.unless it can soothe a bruised ego,â she giggled.
The pie maker held her hand gently and gave her a small smile â I suppose that feeling can cause some distress, while ice may not help a bruised ego, perhaps a slice of pie might?â
Ellie scrunched her nose and smiled. âItâs hard to turn down pie, it wouldnât be causing too much trouble would it?â
â i would not offer if it did cause me any trouble, please come inâ the pie maker smiled
âThank you, thatâs really nice of you,â she smiled as she followed him.
â itâs no problem, please come insideâ the pie maker said with a small smile
Ellie trailed in behind him and gave Digby a pet when he approached her.
âplease give him all the attention you desire⊠more so that he desiresâ chuckled the pie maker who went to retrieve some pie for the girl
âOh I will, donât worry about that, youâre such a good boy,â she cooed as she fussed over Digby.
â I am a bit allergic so i donât touch himâŠâ the pie maker mumbled and put the pie in the microwave
âOh no,â she pouted. âThatâs kinda sucky for both of you, but Iâm happy to give him plenty of pets whenever he wants!â
â Youâre more than appreciatedâ grinned the pie maker who put down a piece of hot cherry pie for her
She kissed the top of Digbyâs head. âMmm wow that smells so good,â she grinned as she sat down to eat it.
â i have ice cream as well if thatâs what you wantâ grinned the pie maker
âI would love some, please,â she smiled.
â of course, no problem with thatâ grinned the pie maker who gave her another scoop
âThank you,â she grinned and slowly ate her pie. âSo delicious,â she mumbled.
â You already look to be feeling betterâ grinned the pie maker who cleaned up a bit in the kitchen
âI am, thank you. Pie really soothes the soul, huh?â She giggled.
âThe soul and in your case, the ego it appearsâ noted the pie makes
âYouâre right about that,â she smiled, shaking her head. âA truly magical dessert.â
â Magic may very well be a part of themâ the pie maker teased softly
âYouâre right, I think there always is in baking,â she said.
â That and a very intrinsic chemical scienceâ chuckled the pie maker â magic is perhaps easier to understand than thatâ
âPerhaps,â she shrugged. âI just find baking really lovely.â
â I wish I could bake something other than pies, Iâm only good at thoseâ
âYouâre amazing at pies though. I can do cupcakes,â she smiled.
â Perhaps one day youâll be the one making me a baked goodâ teased the pie maker with a smile
âI would love to! I could even make you some dinner too,â she smiled.
âNow you speak on spoiling meâ the pie maker laughed a bit and shook his head â youâre too kind to me Ellie
âYouâre really kind to me,â she smiled. âPlus itâs nice cooking for me than just me!â
â You really think so?â The pie maker asked softly â I suppose I concur seeing as I also enjoy serving others foodâ
âI do! I always loved doing it with my mother and I donât haveâŠa lot of friends so itâs nice to have someone to cook for. My dâŠfather always has us eat at a restaurant when itâs meeting time,â she sighed.
The Pie Maker felt his face fall and a certain ache in his heart, sitting across from her and giving her a soft look â I suppose I understand a bit better than I initially anticipated⊠youâre free to cook here whenever youâd likeâ
âReally?â She asked in surprise as she lifted her head. âIn your fancy kitchen?â She smiled.
â My kitchen is not that fancy⊠but if you want to cook here you always are welcomeâ laughed the pie maker
âIt is compared to my little one,â she giggled. âAnd thank you, Ned.â
â Youâre very welcome, youâre not too far away so just knock and youâre welcomeâ
âThank you, Ned and thanks for the pie, it was really yummy,â she smiled.
â Youâre very welcome Ellie, youâre always welcomeâ the pie maker gave her a big smile
She stood up and gave Digby a few pets then gently touched Nedâs arm. âYou have a good night, ok?â
â You as well Ellie, take care now and call of you need anythingâ the pie maker said softly
âI will, thanks,â Ellie smiled before she headed back to her apartment and cuddled with Blossom.
The Pie Maker watched as the girl walked back to her apartment, turning to his faithful dog with a smile â she is such a characterâ
The next day, Ellie wandered into the pie hole with wide eyes and holding a stuffed rabbit.
The Pie Maker blinked as he looked over at the girl, giving her a small frown â Ellie, you look odd whatâs the matter?â
Ellie hugged her rabbit close and gave Ned a shy wave. âIs so pretty in here,â she murmured.
â Ellie, are you doing okay? Your demeanor has me a bit concerned. Perhaps you did gif your head yesterdayâ whispered the pie maker with concern, approaching he slowly
She gave him a shy little smile then rubbed her head. âMmm no bump and it no hurts, I think I ok,â she smiled.
â You donât seem okay⊠perhaps that is not the right turn of phrase⊠you do not seem⊠yourselfâ whispered the pie maker as he brought her to the kitchen
âI tinie, I not âposed to leave the apartment but I smelled the pie!â She said excitedly.
â But what do you mean tiny? I suppose it does not appear that you have shrunk at all physicallyâ the pie maker said softly and had her sit down in the back
Ellie smiled and hugged her bunny tightly, thinking a bit. âBig Ellie and little Ellie, I little Ellie,â she tried to explain as best she could, figuring big Ellie could explain better once she was out of little space.
The pie maker blinked as he began to understand the circumstances, patting her head gently and humming â would you like ice cream little Ellie?â
Ellieâs eyes lit up and she nodded her head. âYes pease!!!â
â Perhaps that is a good startâ whispered the pie maker, who served her a scoop of vanilla ice cream with sprinkles
âThank you,â she cheered and began to eat her ice cream happily.
The Pie Maker leaned back on the counter and hummed to himself, observing the girl as she ate â youâre very welcomeâ
Ellie was very content to eat her ice cream, finishing every last drop. âYummy.â
â Now, could you tell me a little more about⊠Little Ellie?â
âMhmmm! I wike to color and pway wif my stuffies!! And sometimes cartoons!â
â and perhaps we can find something for you to do with that hereâ murmured the pie maker as he looked around, finding a piece of paper and some old crayons in a drawer
Ellieâs eyes lit up and she took the things happily. âTank you,â she smiled and started to color and doodle.
â youâre welcomeâ the pie maker said softly, watching over her closely
Ellie gave him a little smile, her tongue poking out of the corner of her mouth as she colored.
â at least youâre a happy childâ murmured the pie maker with a smile
Ellie finished up her drawing then covered up a yawn. âI sleepyâŠ.I go back to take nap,â she told Ned.
â do you need me to take you back to your apartment?â Asked the pie maker with a bit of concern
âYes pease!â She said and stood up, reaching her small hand out to him.
The pie maker looked down at the girl and gently held her hand in his big one â alright, back we goâ
Ellie beamed up at him and swung their hands as they went back up to her apartment and she used the key around her neck to unlock the door.
â Thatâs very smart of you to have thatâ whispered the pie maker with a grin. â do you need me to grab anything for youâ
She shakes her head as she unlocks the door. âNope, I gonna take a nap,â she said softly then wrapped her arms around Nedâs waist.
The pie maker lifted his arms in surprise and wrapped his arms around the small girl â oh okay⊠as long as youâre okayâ
She looked up at him with big eyes before she nodded her head and held a thumbs up for him. âMhmmm, I pwomise!â
âDonât be afraid to let me know if you need anything, little Ellieâ whispered the pie maker
âI wonât!!!!â Little Ellie promised as she crossed her heart.
â Iâll close the door for you, you get to napping little oneâ the pie maker said softly
âTank you, Ned,â she smiled and snuggled under her blankets.
â Youâre very welcomeâ whispered the pie maker, who closed her door and left her be for her nap
Ellie had a good nap, waking up later to play with Blossom, feeling happy
The Pie Maker went back to his shop until closing, coming back up and knocking on the door to check in Ellie, his hands in his pockets
Ellie rubbed her face and opened the door. âHi Ned!â She smiled up at him. âYou can come if youâd like.â
â Good Morning Ellie, how are you feeling?â The pie maker asked softly
âMuch better, thank you,â she said with warm cheeks. âSorry about that.â
âNo worries, I just wanted to make sure youâre okayâ the pie maker said softly
âI am, thank you,â she smiled. âJust need a good nap.â
â sometimes thatâs is all it takes, though I am so glad you are found wellâ grinned the pie maker
âI am indeed, thank you for looking after me,â she smiled up at him.
â Of course, Iâm not too sure whether or not Iâm qualified to help, but I will always try my bestâ the pie maker whispered
âThank you and well Iâve gotten a system down for when I go into that headspace so I can usually look after myself, but sometimes little me wants company,â Ellie admitted. âShe very much enjoyed coloring and having pie.â
â Well i suppose I donât blame her, I think most would enjoy it as well if offered the opportunity toâ
âYouâre right about that, it can be very freeing,â Ellie smiled. âDo you want some tea?â She offered.
â I think I would enjoy a cup greatly actuallyâ grinned the pie maker â thank you for offeringâ
âOf course,â she smiled and skipped over to the put the kettle on to boil. âI have earl grey or green or oooo a jasmine one!â
â Green Tea sounds lovelyâ the pie maker grinned as he walked in with her
Ellie smiled and got down two mugs along with two bags of green tea while they waited for the water to boil. Blossom twitched happily in her large cage.
The Pie Maker looked over at the bunny, a small sad smile on his face as he looked at her. â How has the rabbit been? well i hopeâ
âOh yeah, sheâs been great, I was lucky you two found her!â Ellie smiled, filling up the mugs with hot water once the kettle whistled.
The Pie maker gave a small smile and nod, keeping an eye if ur for the bunny â I suppose it was a rare stroke of luck on my endâ
âIt really was and Iâm glad you noticed,â Ellie smiled, letting the bags steep in the hot water. âAlmost ready!â
âThank you for this Ellieâ The Pie Maker grinned holding his hands close to his chest
