i think mari's death is a representation of their loss of unity. her character fits this: she's the one starting the scene of them all dancing together in season 1, and her role is meant to show the general opinoin of the people as she moves from whoever holds genuine sway over the group.

the way her death is executed also fulfills this scene. every other time a character has died in the show (excluding crystal, since only misty knows she is dead, though i think her death represents the loss of reality/sanity for this reason), it's from a general group consensus. the only character who spoke out against that actions that caused laura lee and jackie's deaths were coach, who was never considered part of the girls' group, anyway. but everyone went to watch laura lee fly the plane, no one spoke up for jackie when shauna told her to leave the cabin, and coach was voted for the death sentence, which is his reasoning for asking nat to kill him.

mari's death is the opposite of this. everyone is splintered, since everyone is in the hunt for their own reasons, and less than half the people actually are trying to kill her. mari's actual death is also based the least on collective group effort, since her falling into the pit is due to her own frustration and stubbornness with lottie.
