I think people should learn the difference between blood brothers and martial arts brothers and the world would be a better place. I’m joking but I’m also not joking. Some fans (usually from western fandom) mistake martial arts brothers and foster brothers and that’s why there’s so much confusion in this regard. Wwx wasn’t adopted by the Jiangs, his father was a servant of the Jiangs ergo he’s a servant too and Madame Yu likes to remind him of his place although the other members of the family really tend to see him as the part of the family. And that’s where the delicious complexity comes to the picture, and that’s why some fans don’t like it when other fans ship chengxian other than brothers. But remember, this is a fictional relationship about fictional characters and you can do with them whatever the fuck you want in your head.

We have an in universe example of adoption with Lan Sizhui, and it doesn’t look like Wei Wuxian’s relationship with the Jiang family. Madame Jin’s comment about how Jiang Yanli shouldn’t go off with Wei Wuxian unchaperoned are not from the POV of someone who sees them as siblings - it’s not a scandalous incest accusation, it’s a “You’re spending alone time with an unrelated young man? You must understand how that looks.” And Jiang Yanli claims him as her brother, but that’s clearly not the default assumption.
