bio
Born to a military couple in The Philippines, Naya grew up knowing the world but not really knowing her roots. Her little family traveled wherever her parents were deployed (which was always difficult with both of them being in the military), and she was more used to switching kindergartens and schools than any kid should have been. It didn't matter which country or continent it was, Naya got to see it all.
Eventually, their family came across Cuba. Her parents were deployed there for an exceptionally long time, and for the first time in her relatively short life, Naya had a chance to settle down. It was difficult when she didn't know the language, but she was bubbly and creative, and soon enough, she was making friends left and right. There was one passion that Naya found to work no matter which country she was living in at the time; singing. No matter the class, the city or the country, everyone loved singing or watching someone sing, and it always helped her assimilate.
It was long before she met a boy who would quickly become her best friend. Diego was fun to hang out with, and every time she was over, his mother dotted over her, helping her learn the language and do so much more. A day didn't go by when they didn't spend hours upon hours singing together, bonding and becoming completely inseparable. He was the friend she always needed, and she swore up and down that nothing would ever separate them.
They say when you make plans, life laughs at you. It was exactly what happened to Naya. With her parents always wanting her to follow their path and get into the military, the girl naturally wanted everything but that. She wanted to sing, she wanted to be famous and loved, and her parents were against it. So when she started finding places - odd stages here and there when she was allowed to sing - she didn't tell them anything. When a charming man invited her to sing at the bar he just so happened to own, she agreed quickly. When he invited her to have dinner with him, he agreed. And when he asked her to move in with him months later, she agreed.
Life was turning out great. She wasn't talking to her parents, but she was singing, she was getting the attention she always wanted, and she was dating a fantastic man. It didn't matter that he often disappeared, coming home smelling of alcohol and covered in blood that wasn't his. He loved her, she loved him, and life was great.
Of course, everything came crashing down. It was by pure accident that Naya had walked in on her boyfriend taking care of business, and suddenly, everything made sense. That bar she performed at? It was a complete cover for gang operations, money laundering and so much more. Everything came crashing down, everything suddenly clicking right into place; he had done so much, and he had hurt so many, her now ex-best-friend included. Naya couldn't handle it. Before she even knew it, she was confronting him, her temper acting up. She needed answers, and she needed them now.
Naturally, her boyfriend did not agree with it. Being told to shut up and play pretty didn't sit right with Naya, and she threatened to leave him, threatened to go straight to the police to tell them everything. He didn't take well to it, and before Naya even knew it, his hands were on her, but no longer in the same loving way that they used to. The pain was inevitable, it was overwhelming, and she thought it would be too much to handle. Naya was giving up, panic taking over her, but when his hands moved to her throat, crushing it, removing her access to oxygen, her survival instincts kicked in. it was by a miracle that she managed to reach for a bottle nearby, smashing it into the man's head. His confusion and wailings gave Naya enough time to grab her passport and run - or stumble out of the house they shared, really. She had no idea whether he lived or died, but, now that she knew his place in the gang, she knew she had no chance of survival.
Beaten up and hurting, her voice gone, Naya managed to get out of the country before finally seeking medical help. And while her bruises and cuts healed, the doctors struggled to get her throat back to its previous condition. All seemed fine, yet her vocal cords just didn't seem to... work. Over the course of time, the hoarseness in her voice went away, yet singing pained her, and she did not sound the same. Hurt and terrified, Naya was scared of trying, of working to improve, and eventually, she gave up. Her one dream to sing had nearly killed her, and now, she had no idea what to do.
Except to run, of course. She knew better than to mess with the gang her now ex-boyfriend belong to, and she knew better than to remain complacent. Over the many years since the incident, she learned how to travel while remaining incognito, returning back to her roots, and began relocating every six to twelve months. Staying long enough in one place to get her education and become a nurse, Naya no longer thought about her wonderful, dreamy career in singing, knowing that it was a wish she could no longer fulfill. After all, unlike Ariel, she lost her voice trying to get away from her prince, not to get to him.
