I’m a two-spirit mixed nb trans guy saving for top surgery that I need desperately. I am insured, but my student insurance excludes transgender healthcare so I will be forced to pay for my surgery out of pocket.

I live with near constant chronic back pain caused by a childhood injury and scoliosis. I also have asthma, and binding my large chest has made my pain significantly worse and makes breathing very difficult, even with a well fitted binder.

In the past several months my physical problems have worsened significantly, to the point where I can barely bind anymore- I simply can’t wait years longer to have this surgery. Without insurance coverage or help from family, as a full time independent student, I am going to have to take out a medical loan to access this lifesaving care.

just a reminder that you are under no obligation to label yourself according to the western-centric + white-centric labels of gender and sexuality.

lgbtq+ identities existed long before colonization touched our land. You do not have to exchange one type of conformity for another to fit in with other lgbtq+ folks.

If labels like nonbinary, genderfluid, etc feel good to you, go for it!

If two-spirit feels right, that’s awesome! If not, don’t sweat it.

If you have an identity specific to your indigenous heritage, you are under no obligation to translate your complex, nuanced identity into terms that non-natives understand.

You are under no explanation to explain your identity to non-natives.

Please take the time to support, uplift and remember your Native, First Nations, Aboriginal and otherwise Indigenous friends and family. We are here, we exist! We have a long and winding history that deserves to be heard and respected! The word ‘Indigenous’ is so wonderful, and so expansive, and includes so many different cultures under its arms. Go out, learn about our histories and our cultures. Talk to the Indigenous people around you! We’re everywhere!

And not only that, but also be sure to give extra support to LGBT indigenous voices in this community. We are a minority that is scarcely acknowledged, and in desperate need of it. Too many times have I gotten strange looks for being so openly Native and so openly a lesbian. It’s as if that combination is impossible for people to understand. Support our content, buy from our stores! Or at least just include us!
