“oh then i most definitely will try,” she sighed, finishing off her drink and setting it back on the bar. “okay… then why didn’t zeus bring hera? or the people playing them, they sat next to each other but didn’t seem to know one another well.”

“i’m being honest?” hermes laughed, shaking his head. “your ego is getting the best of you, narcissus. should have checked that at the door before entering.” he sighed, facing the other male. “yes, it did say that. to prevent people from making a late entrance. doesn’t mean you couldn’t have made a grand entrance. and i believe you meant are keeping. the night isn’t over.”

“Because what I was is what’s kept us relevant for years, and frankly, it took this long for anything to get fucked up, so I’d say I’ve done a pretty damn good job. You’ve never had anything but yourself Narcissus, that’s got to be the saddest thing of all. I’m not following the crowd either. I’m doing everything against everybody’s better judgement because no one trusts me.”

“have you? because we’re no where closer to being back where we should be. and at this point, a party sounds perfect to actually get everyone in the same room. that hasn’t happened in a long time, nemesis. i don’t need anyone else. how is showing up to a party with everyone else working against everybody? you could’ve refused to come, talked people into believing it was a trap. yet we’re all here.”

“now i almost feel the need to forget it just to prove a point,” she sighed, plastering on a smile again as she turned back to face the other. “no i didn’t. wasnt sure if this was a party that allowed a plus one.”

“Okay, that’s a lie and you fucking know it. My track record is a whole lot better than most gods, and I’m not here to win every time, I’m here to keep balance. There is a difference. And sure…you say that now. When you’re in a room full of actual gods and goddesses, what are you then? Because you’re looking a whole lot like nothing. I’m not here for fun, I’m here because everybody else is, and I want to see who is behind all of this.”

“to keep balance? you’re the first to jump down anyone’s throat when they don’t do exactly what you want. if anything, you cause more chaos than we really need. and that’s the thing, nemesis. i’ve never needed to be a god to prove myself. all these people thinking they’re the shit, and what do they really have to show for it? nothing, when i have everything. you’re never down to have fun, i’m not surprised you’re only following the crowd.”

“i’m not tearing it down, i’m stating a fact,” he hummed, shrugging his shoulders. hermes knew nothing he said would put a dent in narcissus’ ego but he had to take a stab at it anyways. “please you would have gotten in, you have an invitation. i’m surprised you didn’t take the opportunity for a grand entrance. if zara and poseidon wasn’t hosting this, i’m pretty sure they would have.”

ana couldn’t help rolling her eyes as she sipped her drink. another egotistical man, just what she needed. “and i’m sure you will. i’m anastasia. glad to finally have a name for the face.”

“oh come on, at least let yourself enjoy it a little bit,” anastasia teased the other. “well with that ego, i can see why,” she smiled sweetly. “familiar face but no name i’m afraid.”

hermes sighed before he plastered a smile on his face for narcissus. “yes well… i hate to say your jacket looked better in the store lighting. sorry about that,” he hummed, turning to grab his glass. “but glad you could join. would have figured you would have been late.”

“What an odd way to say you ruin things Narcissus. On time is on time, you read far too into everything I’ve noticed. We’ll get inside before you know it. What, are you scared that nobody is going to notice you tonight if you don’t make it in. Are you going to turn back into a pumpkin at a certain time? I’m not a downer, I’m realistic. There is a difference.”

“what world are you living in nemesis? i have not once ruined anything. out of the two of us, your track record isn’t looking so clean. whether i make it in or not people are going to notice me. can’t you see them looking at me already? being so far into the realism makes you a downer. anyone having fun around you automatically gets criticized, so why are you here then if you’re not willing to have any fun?” 

“You really do find a way to ruin everything, don’t you? I think you might want to check again, because it’s not time yet. Though—you’re probably running on your own time? That would be the only logical explanation. Of course it’s not a coincidence that we’re all here, but I’m not hosting, so I don’t have a fucking clue as to why. It’s not like anybody would keep me in the loop.”

“Ruin? No, no. I make everything better, the life of the party! On time is late, or so these humans like to remind me. They wanted us all here by a certain time, the least they can do is open the gates for us to actually go inside. And I guess you’re right. Why would anyone want to keep you in the loop when you’re a downer a majority of the time?”

hermes might have already gotten himself into the drinks table and maybe he shouldn’t have. “it feels so weird to mingle with people i’ve known my entire life. at least they look more like the gods they used to be,” he mused mostly under his breath, not noticing anyone really that close to him until it was too late. 

“oh i love a good party!” anastasia mused, looking around the room and all the artistry. “i’m surprised to see you here though. i feel like i’ve run into you once and now i’m seeing you everywhere.”
