Summer Roses

Meet Arnold & Aad, Lakenvelder bull twins. 

Lakenvelders are quite rare, as are cows getting twins (± 2% of all cattle pregnancies result in twins). 

The first two months after they were born they were always too far away from the fence to photograph, this was the first chance I had to get some almost acceptable pics.

When I arrived their mother quickly approached me (first photo). The farmer whose land they live on was present and I asked him if she was a tad overprotective. ‘No’, he said, ‘She was hoping you had some cookies for her. She really loves cookies’.

The man that owns these cows isn’t a farmer, he just loves Lakenvelders and has them to help prevent the extinction of the breed. He doesn’t own land and pays farmers in the area to let him use their pastures. 

This is the first time in all those years that I have been photographing cows that I see ear tags with the name of the cow written on it. And it is the first time that I see non-Highlander calves that grow up with their mother.

These things make me both sad and happy. Sad because, well, that’s obvious, and happy because there are still people that treat animals like they should be treated.
