So I had noticed a few days ago that @woodendreams, a blog that I don’t follow but shows up on my dash from time to time, has suddenly started posted pictures of women, but you know what’s odd? 

They are a nature blog.

I believe that they have been possibly hacked by a porn bot, since the names under the pictures link to a porn site.

Please, do NOT reblog or favorite any of the pictures of the women that have been/are posted to their blog, and please check any of the blogs you follow or show up on your dash that have just a picture of a woman with their named linked under the image.

If you see that they suddenly have an influx of these types of pictures PLEASE notify them of what’s happening!

With everything that the staff have fucked up on the site, I’m worried that an innocent blog might get flagged, or censored, or even suspended/deleted/banned because of this.

Much like Kermit and friends we are leaving a place we once called home, not because of any fault of our own, but rather because some greedy business people had other plans and we weren’t part of them.

Many of us are having thoughts of “It can’t end like this!” and “What can we do?” as we worry about our future and where to go. Some of us have built up fanbases of varying sizes outside of Tumblr, while others are stuck having to try to build a new following out of nowhere and that’s scary for a lot of us. Like the Muppets we are weird and strange people and we don’t know where else our weird and strange kind will be excepted.

To those of you people who are worried, my thoughts are similar to Kermit’s:

“I don’t care if no one believes in us because… I believe… You know, what’s important isn’t this building or a name, it’s each other. So I say fine, let’s just start at the bottom and work our way back up to the top. Let’s all walk out through these doors with our heads held high… As a family… because that’s what we are.”

Tumblr might be going the way of the dodo, but it wasn’t the website that made it great, it was the people. It was the artists, the musicians, the actors, the cosplayers, the writers, everyone who had something to contribute made this site possible… The way I see it, if the website might be gone, but the people who produced the content aren’t.

Like Kermit I say let’s start from the bottom and work our way back to the top while helping each other. Spreading the word of where our favorite content creators have moved and sticking with each other. Moving all this creativity to somewhere else, making sure we still support each other. When we leave this site, let us leave with our heads held high, proud of what we’ve done and what we’ll continue to do.

I have never met the majority of my followers, the people I follow, the people I see notes from, but to me… As sappy as it seems… You all feel like family. We just have to have to move to a new house.

What this scene from The Muppets tells us, is that even if we leave we should continue to stick each other and support each other, and we will find success and love wherever we go.

It’s Under Control is a fun little game where your life is a delicate balancing act…. literally!

Content regulation algorithms tell me that sci-fi authors are overly generous in these depictions.

“Why did cop bot arrest that nice elderly woman?”

“It insists she’s the mafia.”

“It thinks she’s in the mafia?”

This is why a lot of people say AI are so dangerous. Not because they will one day wake up and be conscious and overthrow humanity, but that they (or at least this type of AI) are not and never will be conscious, and yet we’re relying on them to do things that require such human characteristics as logic and any sort of thought process whatsoever. Humans have a really bad tendency to anthropomorphize, and we’d like to think the AI is “making decisions” or “thinking,” but the truth is that what it’s doing is fundamentally different from either of those things. What we see as, say, a field of grass, a neural network may see as a bus stop. Not because there is actually a bus stop there, or that anything in the photo resembles a bus stop according to our understanding, but because the exact right pixels in the photo were shaded in the exact right way so that they just so happened to be statistically correlated with the arbitrary functions it created when it was repeatedly exposed to pictures of bus stops over and over. It doesn’t know what grass is, what a bus stop is, but it sure as hell will say with 99.999% certainty that one is in fact the other, for reasons you can’t understand, and will drive your automated bus off the road and into a ditch because of this undetectable statistical overlap. Because a few pixels were off in just the right way in just the right places and it got really, really confused for a second.

There, I even caught myself using the word “confused” to describe it. That’s not right, because “confused” is a human word. What’s happening with the AI is something we don’t have the language to describe.

Anyway what’s more, this sort of trickery can be mimicked. A human wouldn’t be able to figure it out, but another neural network can easily guess the statistical filters it uses to identify things and figure out how to alter images with some white noise in exactly the right way to make the algorithm think it’s actually something else. It’ll still look like the original image, just with some pixelated artifacts, but the algorithm will see it as something completely different. This is what’s known as a “single pixel attack.” I am fairly confident porn bot creators might end up cracking the content flagging algorithm and start putting up some weirdly pixelated porn anyway, and all of this will be in vain. All because Tumblr staff decided to rely on content moderation via slot machine.

Now, the alarming aspect of this story is that the very same technology is probably what tumblr is using to identify porn. Now, if it can’t tell that an empty field is not, in fact, full of sheep, what hope do we have that it can’t tell an empty room isn’t full of writing human forms engaged in passionate coitus?

Also, this kind of system is super vulnerable to counter-neural strategies. I bet you before the end of the month someone hooks up their own open source one layer bicategory neural network which puts an imperceptible (to humans) layer of patterned static over arbitrary images, and trains it by having it bot-post static-ed images to Tumblr and reinforcing based on whether the images are labeled nsfw or sfw. Seriously, within a month someone will have an input-output machine which can turn any image ‘sfw’ in Tumblr’s eyes.
