My chosen weekly topic was experimentation. I decided to continue experimenting on and altering my groups project from assessment 2. In this project we all created masks, which we then wore in a dance performance. This was inspired by Neri Oxman’s 3D printed mask, made as a wearable for Bjork (2016). Her piece aimed to create a new identity and freedom of expression. This freedom of expression through experimentation is what I am exploring in my final piece. I maintained the use of the mask in this piece as the anonymity I feel aids experimentation without feeling self-conscious. I also wanted to experiment with the affect other clothes had on the body. I first took some photos of different people in the mask, I felt that even though you could not see their faces some of their personality was maintained through their clothes and posture. My final piece removes the clothes and gives the power to the audience to dress the figure. I feel this gives free range of experimentation and am interested to see the combinations of clothes and colours that people choose. This piece draws attention to the freedom of identity we can create through our choice in clothes, but also to our unease of the human figure when it is not properly clothed in a public space. I also hope that the piece conveys an element of comedy, that it comes across a little silly.

Photos of my friends in the mask, cannot see their faces but can see elments of their personality

I have decided to experiment with applying other garments to the body apart from the mask. This has lead me to the idea of dressing people up. Therefore I am using this image of my friend as a base and want to make some clothes that people can pin onto the image of him. Kinda like pin the tail on the donkey.

I am thinking of putting this mask on different people and observing how it disguises them and what affect it has.

For my final experiment I decided to turn my box into a pinhole camera, I feel that this act encapsulated both the use of a box, and light well, which is what I was trying to achieve in the first two experiments. I completed this task, painting the inside of the box black, to remove reflections, and cutting a hole in the box to use for the pin hole/aperture. Foil was then placed over the hole, and I poked another hole in the foil with a needle to create the pinhole. I then proceeded to take photos of rubbish bins. I chose rubbish bins as the subject as I wanted to highlight the use one can get out of a box that would usually get thrown in the bin. The end product is a series of photos (positives and negatives) of bins in and around campus. The photos came out in differing ranges of clarity, but I was pleased with the aesthetic value in them. I feel the transformation of the box into photos, although interesting, could be furthered. The detail in the procedure and within the photos could become a good basis for another project.

Background research on camera obscuras

For my last experiment I hope to transform this box into a pinhole camera. As previously this experiment combines the box and light to create something new. The camera pictured underneath this box, is a kind of plastic pinhole camera. The difference being it uses 35mm film. whereas I will attempt to use photographic paper to capture my images.

This were some of the results from my last experiment. I am most drawn to the top photo as the long exposure captures more of the light from within and around the box.

For this experiment I decided to work with light coming from within the box. I have poked some holes in this box, and am going to find a light source to put inside. I want to see what affects this can create and capture them through photography.

I tried to manipulate my box into angular shapes and then see what shadow it would cast. I did not really enjoy the results. I think they could have been improved with better cutting tools and a better method of casting a shadow.
